Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Open the door requiring speaker replacement and lower the window completely
- Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning disassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel lower fastenersUsing the T20 Torx driver, remove the two lower door panel screws located at the bottom edge of the door panel. These may be concealed behind small trim caps that need to be pried out first with a trim removal tool.
- 2Remove door handle trim and fastenersCarefully insert the panel removal tool behind the door handle trim bezel and release the clips. Remove the bezel to expose the T25 Torx screw behind the handle. Remove this screw and set aside.
- 3Remove additional door panel fastenersLocate and remove all remaining door panel fasteners, typically including one T25 Torx screw in the upper corner near the mirror and one in the armrest pull cup area. Check for any additional screws specific to the EDV configuration.
- 4Release door panel clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner, carefully insert the panel removal tool between the door panel and door frame. Work around the perimeter releasing the plastic retention clips. Pull the panel outward with steady pressure, not upward, to avoid breaking clips. There are typically 8-12 clips around the perimeter.
- 5Disconnect door panel electrical connectorsWith the door panel loose, lift it up and away from the door frame. Locate all electrical connectors for power windows, door locks, and any additional switches. Depress the locking tabs and disconnect each connector. Support the door panel to prevent strain on wiring.
- 6Remove door panel completelyOnce all electrical connections are disconnected, remove the door panel from the vehicle and set it on a clean protected surface with the interior side facing up. Remove the vapor barrier if necessary by carefully peeling back the adhesive, taking care not to tear it.
- 7Locate and access the door speakerIdentify the speaker location within the door. The speaker is typically mounted in the lower front section of the door. Use a flashlight to inspect the mounting configuration and locate the speaker electrical connector.
- 8Disconnect speaker electrical connectorReach into the door cavity and locate the speaker wiring connector. Depress the locking tab and disconnect the speaker from the vehicle harness. If testing the old speaker, use a multimeter to verify signal at the connector before proceeding.
- 9Remove speaker mounting fastenersUsing the appropriate Torx driver (typically T20 or T25), remove the speaker mounting screws. Most Rivian door speakers use 3 or 4 screws around the perimeter. Support the speaker while removing the final screw to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
- 10Remove old speaker from doorCarefully extract the speaker from the mounting location. Note the orientation of the speaker and any gaskets or seals that must be transferred to the new speaker. Inspect the mounting surface for any debris or damage.
- 11Install new speakerPosition the new speaker in the door with the correct orientation, ensuring any gaskets or seals are properly seated. Align the mounting holes and begin threading the mounting screws by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten screws in a star pattern to ensure even seating.
- 12Connect speaker electrical connectorPlug the speaker electrical connector into the new speaker, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place securely. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is fully seated.
- 13Test speaker functionReconnect the 12V battery temporarily and power on the vehicle infotainment system. Test the replaced speaker through the audio balance/fade controls to verify proper operation before reassembling the door panel. Disconnect battery again before continuing.
Reassembly
- Reapply or replace the vapor barrier ensuring all adhesive areas are sealed properly
- Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors ensuring locking tabs engage
- Position the door panel and hook the top edge onto the door frame first, then press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retention clips
- Reinstall all door panel fasteners in reverse order, starting with the door handle screw
- Reinstall any trim bezels and caps that were removed
- Reconnect the 12V battery and verify all door functions including window, locks, and speaker operation
Verification
- Power on the vehicle and test audio through all speakers with specific focus on the replaced unit
- Use the balance and fade controls to isolate the replaced speaker and verify full range of sound
- Verify no rattles or abnormal sounds from the speaker at various volume levels
- Test all door panel switches, window operation, and door lock functions
- Inspect door panel for proper fitment with even gaps and all clips fully engaged
- Open and close the door several times to ensure no interference with panel installation
