This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the instrument cluster speedometer/digital display on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500 electric delivery van.
Warnings
⚠️Always disconnect 12V battery before working on electrical components in electric vehicles. The high-voltage system remains energized even with 12V disconnected.
⚠Do not force plastic trim pieces. Clips break easily and replacements may have long lead times.
⚠The instrument cluster retains vehicle-specific programming. Replacement may require Rivian dealer programming or fleet service tool access.
ℹ️This procedure requires access to Rivian service documentation for final cluster configuration and VIN programming.

Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Dashboard trim clips (assorted) × 1 — Rivian service kit
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn off vehicle completely using power button
- Wait 5 minutes for all systems to power down
- Open hood and disconnect 12V battery negative terminal
- Wait an additional 2 minutes for capacitor discharge
- Cover steering column and seat with protective cloth to prevent scratches
- Ensure you have the vehicle VIN and current odometer reading recorded for cluster programming
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverUsing plastic trim tools, carefully pry the lower steering column cover starting at the seam near the bottom. Release the retaining clips on both sides and pull downward to remove. Set aside with fasteners in a container.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverLocate the two Torx T20 screws at the bottom of the upper steering column cover. Remove screws, then lift the upper cover upward and away from the column. Disconnect any electrical connectors for column-mounted controls if present.
- 3Remove dashboard upper trim panelStarting at the passenger side, use plastic trim tools to release the clips securing the upper dashboard trim panel that surrounds the instrument cluster. Work slowly around the perimeter, releasing approximately 8-10 clips. Lift panel upward once all clips are released.
- 4Disconnect ambient light sensor connectorLocate the ambient light sensor connector on the backside of the removed trim panel (typically centered near windshield). Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector. Set trim panel aside in safe location.
- 5Remove instrument cluster mounting fastenersLocate four Torx T25 screws securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard frame (two on top, two on bottom). Remove all four screws and keep them organized for reinstallation.
- 6Pull cluster forwardCarefully pull the instrument cluster assembly straight forward approximately 3-4 inches. Support the cluster with one hand to prevent strain on electrical connectors. Do not pull too far as connectors are still attached.
- 7Disconnect cluster electrical connectorsLocate the main harness connector at the rear of the cluster (large multi-pin connector). Press the locking tab and carefully pull connector straight back to disconnect. If equipped with secondary connectors for additional displays or ambient lighting, disconnect those as well.
- 8Remove instrument clusterWith all connectors disconnected, carefully remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard opening. Place on clean, soft surface with display facing up to prevent scratches.
- 9Inspect new cluster and connectorsInspect the new instrument cluster for any shipping damage. Check that all connector pins are straight and clean. Verify part number matches vehicle application. Clean connector contacts on vehicle harness side with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.
- 10Install new instrument clusterPosition new cluster near dashboard opening. Reconnect all electrical connectors, ensuring they click fully into place and locking tabs engage. Gently push cluster into dashboard opening, aligning mounting holes with frame.
- 11Secure cluster mounting fastenersInstall all four Torx T25 screws to secure instrument cluster to dashboard frame. Tighten screws in a cross pattern (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to ensure even seating. Snug firmly but do not overtighten plastic-retained screws.
- 12Reinstall dashboard trim panelReconnect ambient light sensor connector to dashboard trim panel. Position panel over instrument cluster and align all clip locations. Press firmly around entire perimeter to seat all clips, listening for audible clicks.
- 13Reinstall steering column coversIf disconnected, reconnect any steering column control connectors. Position upper steering column cover and install two Torx T20 screws. Snap lower steering column cover into place, ensuring all clips engage properly.
- 14Reconnect battery and initializeReconnect 12V battery negative terminal. Power on vehicle and verify instrument cluster powers up. Note that cluster may display default or error information until programmed.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are securely fastened and gaps are even around instrument cluster
- Check that all steering column covers are properly seated with no interference to column adjustments
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in dashboard area
Verification
- Power on vehicle and confirm instrument cluster illuminates and boots properly
- Verify all warning lights perform bulb check sequence on startup
- Check that speedometer reads zero when vehicle is stationary
- Confirm all display segments, pixels, and backlighting function correctly
- Test drive vehicle to verify speedometer displays actual vehicle speed accurately
- Verify odometer reading matches pre-repair recorded value after dealer programming
- Confirm all driver information displays (range, battery level, tire pressure) populate correctly
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes related to instrument cluster communication
