Turn Signal Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the turn signal switch assembly on a 2022 Rivian EDV 500, requiring steering column cover removal and electrical connector disconnection.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn off vehicle completely using power button
3. Ensure steering wheel is in centered position
4. Open driver door and leave open throughout procedure
5. Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait minimum 5 minutes
6. Adjust steering column to lowest and fully extended position for access
7. Gather all tools and replacement parts

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column cover
   Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Using the T20 Torx driver, remove the three screws securing the lower cover (two on sides, one underneath). Gently pull the cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Disconnect the hood release cable if attached to the cover.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   With the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover fasteners. Remove the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom edge of the upper cover. Carefully lift the upper cover upward and away from the steering column, minding any wiring that may be routed near the cover.

   Access turn signal switch assembly
   With both column covers removed, identify the turn signal switch assembly mounted on the left side of the steering column. The assembly includes the turn signal stalk and wiper control stalk as an integrated unit. Note the routing of the wiring harness.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the main electrical connector for the turn signal switch, typically positioned behind the switch assembly. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector. There may be a secondary connector for lighting controls - disconnect this as well by pressing its locking tab and pulling straight out.

   Remove switch mounting fasteners
   Using the T25 Torx driver, remove the two mounting screws securing the turn signal switch assembly to the steering column bracket. These screws are typically located on the outboard side of the switch housing. Support the switch assembly as you remove the final screw.

   Remove turn signal switch assembly
   Carefully pull the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column. Guide the wiring harness through any routing clips or brackets. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle.

   Prepare new turn signal switch
   Unpack the new turn signal switch assembly and verify it matches the removed unit. Check that all electrical connectors are present and undamaged. If the wiring harness requires transfer from the old unit, carefully remove any tape or ties and transfer to the new switch.

   Install new turn signal switch assembly
   Route the wiring harness through the steering column area following the same path as the original. Position the new turn signal switch assembly onto the steering column mounting bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Install the two T25 Torx mounting screws and tighten securely, ensuring the switch sits flush against the bracket.

   Reconnect electrical connectors
   Reconnect the main electrical connector to the turn signal switch, ensuring you hear and feel a positive click indicating proper seating. Reconnect any secondary connectors. Gently tug on each connector to verify they are fully locked.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position the upper steering column cover over the column and align the mounting holes. Install the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom edge. Position the lower cover, reconnect the hood release cable if applicable, and secure with the three T20 Torx screws. Ensure all clips are properly engaged and covers fit flush.

    Reconnect 12V battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Enter the vehicle and power on the system. Allow the vehicle to complete its initialization cycle. The instrument cluster may display warnings briefly during initialization.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully locked and secured
3. Confirm steering wheel returns to center and turn signal switch operates smoothly through full range of motion
4. Check that no wiring is pinched between covers or components

Verification

• Turn vehicle to ON mode without starting
• Test left and right turn signal operation - verify clicking sound and indicator lights on instrument cluster
• Test high beam flash function by pulling turn signal stalk toward you
• Test high beam steady function by pushing stalk forward
• Test windshield wiper controls through all speed settings if integrated with switch
• Verify hazard light function operates correctly
• Check that turn signals self-cancel after turning the steering wheel
• Inspect steering column covers for proper fit and security
• Verify no warning lights remain on the instrument cluster related to lighting or turn signals
• Test drive vehicle and confirm turn signals function properly during actual use
