Parts
- Front window regulator assembly with motor × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel clips (replacement set) × 1 — Rivian door panel clip kit
- Vapor barrier adhesive × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and ensure ignition is off
- Disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery located in the front compartment
- Wait 2 minutes for capacitive discharge in electrical systems
- Lower the window to approximately mid-position for access (if operational)
- Photograph the door panel and connections before disassembly for reference
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel trim componentsRemove the door handle trim bezel by pulling outward from the rear edge. Use a T20 Torx driver to remove the screw behind the handle. Remove the speaker grille cover by gently prying with a panel tool starting at the bottom edge. Remove any visible Torx screws securing the door panel (typically 2-3 screws along the bottom edge and one in the door pull area).
- 2Detach door panel from door frameUsing a door panel removal tool, carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Start at the bottom rear corner and work your way around. There are typically 8-10 clips holding the panel. Once all clips are released, lift the panel upward approximately 1 inch to clear the door latch mechanism, then pull away from the door. Disconnect the door handle cable by sliding the cable end out of the latch mechanism slot.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate and disconnect all electrical connectors from the back of the door panel, including the window switch, door lock switch, mirror controls if equipped, and any speaker connections. Press the locking tabs while pulling connectors straight apart. Set the door panel aside in a safe location where it will not be damaged.
- 4Remove or peel back vapor barrierCarefully peel back the vapor barrier to access the window regulator assembly. The Rivian EDV uses a plastic vapor barrier with butyl adhesive. Peel slowly to avoid tearing. If reusing the barrier, ensure the adhesive remains intact. Fold the barrier back and secure with masking tape to keep it out of the work area.
- 5Secure window glass in up positionIf the window is in a lowered position and the motor is non-functional, manually raise the glass to the full up position. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame or window channel to prevent it from falling. Ensure the tape adheres well and the glass is stable before proceeding.
- 6Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector on the regulator assembly. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector. On Rivian vehicles, this is typically a weatherpack-style connector with a secondary locking tab that must be released first.
- 7Detach window glass from regulatorLocate the bolts or clips securing the window glass to the regulator mounting bracket (typically 2 bolts accessed through holes in the door frame). Use a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket to remove these fasteners. Carefully separate the glass from the regulator bracket. The glass is now supported only by your tape, so ensure it remains secure.
- 8Remove regulator mounting fastenersUsing a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket, remove all bolts securing the window regulator assembly to the door frame. On the Rivian EDV, there are typically 4-6 mounting bolts located along the regulator track and motor mounting points. Keep track of fastener locations as they may be different lengths.
- 9Extract regulator assembly from doorCarefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. The assembly may need to be rotated and angled to clear the internal door structures. Be cautious of the regulator cables or tracks, which may be under slight tension. Fully remove the assembly from the door.⚠Support the regulator assembly as it exits the door to prevent it from falling and causing injury or damage
- 10Install new regulator assemblyPosition the new window regulator and motor assembly and carefully insert it through the access opening in the door frame. Angle and rotate as necessary to navigate past internal structures. Align the regulator mounting holes with the threaded inserts in the door frame. Start all mounting bolts by hand before tightening to ensure proper alignment.
- 11Secure regulator mounting boltsUsing a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket, tighten all regulator mounting bolts securely. Follow a pattern that ensures even mounting pressure. While no torque specification is available in the database, tighten bolts firmly but do not overtighten as you are threading into aluminum or composite door frame material.
- 12Attach window glass to regulatorRemove the tape securing the window glass. Lower the glass into position and align it with the regulator mounting bracket. Insert and hand-start the mounting bolts or clips. Tighten the glass-to-regulator fasteners securely using a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket. Ensure the glass is properly seated and aligned in the channels before final tightening.
- 13Connect motor electrical connectorReconnect the window motor electrical connector to the regulator assembly. Ensure the connector clicks into place and any secondary locking tab is engaged. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector body.
- 14Test window operation before final assemblyReconnect the 12V auxiliary battery temporarily. Turn the ignition to accessory mode and test the window operation using the master switch. Verify the window travels smoothly through its entire range without binding, unusual noise, or hesitation. Check that the auto-up and auto-down functions work properly. If operation is satisfactory, disconnect the battery again before final assembly.
Reassembly
- Reapply or replace the vapor barrier, ensuring all edges are properly sealed with fresh adhesive if necessary
- Route all wiring harnesses back through the door panel opening and reconnect all electrical connectors (window switch, lock switch, mirror controls, speakers)
- Align the door panel with the latch mechanism and lower it into position, then press firmly around all clip locations to secure
- Reinstall all door panel screws in their original locations using the T20 Torx driver
- Reinstall the door handle trim bezel and speaker grille
- Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery
Verification
- Turn ignition to accessory mode and test window operation through multiple full cycles
- Verify auto-up and auto-down functions work correctly and that anti-pinch protection activates
- Check that window seals properly when fully closed with no gaps or wind noise
- Confirm window glass travels smoothly without binding, tilting, or unusual mechanical noise
- Test all door panel switches and controls to ensure proper function after reassembly
- Inspect door panel fitment to ensure all clips are engaged and panel sits flush with body lines
- Perform a final visual inspection of the door panel trim pieces and ensure all fasteners are installed
