Speedometer

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the digital instrument cluster/speedometer assembly in a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 commercial electric delivery van.

• Instrument cluster connector seals (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Turn off all electrical accessories and remove key/fob from vehicle
3. Disconnect negative terminal of 12V battery located under hood
4. Wait minimum 5 minutes for electrical systems to discharge
5. Adjust steering column to lowest position for maximum working clearance
6. Cover dashboard area with clean cloth to prevent scratches during removal

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove steering column lower trim cover
   Using the trim removal tool, carefully pry out the lower steering column cover. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter. Remove the two T20 Torx screws at the top edge once the clips are released. Pull the cover away from the column and set aside.

   Remove steering column upper trim cover
   Locate and remove the two T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover. Gently pull the cover upward and away from the column, being careful of the tilt/telescoping adjustment lever. Set the cover aside in a safe location.

   Remove instrument cluster bezel
   Insert trim removal tools at the top edge of the instrument cluster bezel where it meets the dashboard. Work carefully around the perimeter to release the eight retaining clips (two top, three on each side, one bottom). Pull the bezel straight back once all clips are released. There are no electrical connections on the bezel.

   Remove instrument cluster mounting fasteners
   Locate the four T25 Torx screws securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard frame. Remove all four screws (two on top, two on bottom). Place screws in magnetic tray to prevent loss. Do not pull the cluster out yet as electrical connectors are still attached.

   Disconnect main cluster connector
   Carefully pull the instrument cluster forward approximately 3-4 inches to access the rear connectors. Locate the large gray main connector on the back left side. Press the red locking tab down and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. Support the cluster weight with your other hand.

   Disconnect secondary connector
   Locate the smaller black secondary connector on the back right side of the cluster. Press the locking tab and pull straight back to disconnect. Verify no other connectors or wiring are attached before fully removing the cluster.

   Remove instrument cluster from vehicle
   With both connectors disconnected, carefully pull the instrument cluster straight back and out of the dashboard opening. Tilt slightly if needed to clear the steering column. Place the old cluster on a clean, static-free surface with the screen facing up.

   Prepare new instrument cluster
   Remove the new instrument cluster from packaging. Inspect all connector pins on the back for damage or bent pins. Verify the part number matches the original cluster. Check that rubber connector seals are properly seated in the cluster housing.

   Install new instrument cluster
   Carefully guide the new instrument cluster into the dashboard opening, angling slightly to clear the steering column. Push it in approximately 3-4 inches but do not force it into place yet. Ensure no wiring is pinched behind the cluster.

    Connect instrument cluster connectors
    Connect the large gray main connector first, pushing firmly until you hear and feel it click. The red locking tab should snap into place. Connect the smaller black secondary connector, ensuring it clicks securely. Verify both connections are fully seated by gently pulling on each connector.

    Secure instrument cluster
    Push the instrument cluster fully into the dashboard opening until it is flush with the surrounding dash surface. Install the four T25 Torx mounting screws (two top, two bottom) and tighten in a cross pattern. Screws should be snug but do not overtighten as the cluster housing is plastic.

    Reinstall trim components
    Reinstall the instrument cluster bezel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly around the perimeter until all clips snap into place. Reinstall the upper steering column cover and secure with two T20 Torx screws. Reinstall the lower steering column cover, seating the clips first, then install the two T20 Torx screws at the top.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are securely fastened and aligned properly
2. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and tighten to specification
3. Ensure no tools or parts are left in the vehicle cabin or dashboard area

Verification

• Turn the vehicle to ON position without starting drive system and verify instrument cluster powers up and displays Rivian logo
• Check that all warning lights illuminate during startup sequence then extinguish
• Verify speedometer displays 0 mph and all gauge needles/displays return to rest position
• Test all instrument cluster functions including trip computer, range display, and menu navigation
• Drive vehicle at low speed in safe area and verify speedometer accurately displays vehicle speed
• Check for any warning messages or fault codes related to instrument cluster communication
• Note: New cluster may require VIN programming through Rivian service software before full functionality is restored
