This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the instrument cluster in a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 delivery van, including high-voltage system safety protocols and electrical disconnection.
Warnings
⚠️This vehicle contains high-voltage systems exceeding 400V. Always disconnect the high-voltage system and wait 10 minutes before working near electrical components. Failure to do so can result in electrocution or death.
⚠️Never work on this vehicle with wet hands or while standing in water. The high-voltage battery system remains energized even when the vehicle is off.
⚠Disconnecting the 12V battery will erase certain vehicle settings and may trigger fault codes. Have diagnostic equipment available to clear codes after reinstallation.
⚠The instrument cluster contains vehicle-specific calibration data. Replacement clusters must be programmed to the vehicle using Rivian diagnostic software.
ℹ️This procedure requires access to Rivian service software for cluster configuration and VIN programming after installation.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure vehicle is powered off completely and key fob is at least 10 feet away from vehicle
- Open rear cargo area and locate high-voltage disconnect service plug near battery pack
- Put on insulated high-voltage safety gloves rated for at least 1000V
- Pull high-voltage service disconnect and store in a secure location away from vehicle
- Wait minimum 10 minutes for high-voltage capacitors to discharge
- Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Verify no voltage present at cluster connectors using digital multimeter
- Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and extend fully out for access
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coverLocate the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws and carefully pull the lower cover downward and away from the column. Disconnect any electrical connectors if present for adjustable steering or paddle shifters.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws). Remove the screws and lift the upper cover up and away from the steering column. Set aside carefully to avoid scratching.
- 3Remove instrument cluster trim bezelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully pry around the perimeter of the instrument cluster trim bezel starting at the bottom corners. Work your way around releasing all clips (typically 8-10 clips). Pull the bezel forward gently, being mindful of any ambient light sensor wiring that may be attached to the bezel. Disconnect any electrical connectors before fully removing the bezel.
- 4Access cluster mounting fastenersWith the bezel removed, you will now have clear access to the instrument cluster assembly. Locate the four T25 Torx screws securing the cluster to the dashboard frame (one in each corner of the cluster housing). Keep track of any spacers or washers on these screws.
- 5Remove cluster mounting screwsRemove all four T25 Torx screws securing the instrument cluster. Support the cluster with one hand as you remove the final screw to prevent it from falling forward. The cluster should now be free to pull forward approximately 3-4 inches from the dashboard.
- 6Disconnect cluster electrical connectorsCarefully pull the instrument cluster forward to access the rear connectors. Locate the main cluster harness connector (large multi-pin connector) and the secondary connectors if equipped. Press the locking tab on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and routing of each connector for reassembly. Verify with multimeter that no voltage is present before handling connectors.
- 7Remove instrument cluster from vehicleWith all electrical connectors disconnected, carefully maneuver the instrument cluster out of the dashboard opening. Avoid contact with surrounding trim pieces and the steering column. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage before installing the replacement cluster.
- 8Prepare replacement clusterRemove the new instrument cluster from its protective packaging. Inspect all connector pins for damage or contamination. Verify that any connector seals are properly seated. Compare the new cluster to the old one to ensure correct application and connector configuration.
- 9Install replacement clusterCarefully position the new instrument cluster near the dashboard opening. Route the electrical connectors through first, then guide the cluster into position. Align the mounting holes with the dashboard frame. Do not force the cluster if it does not seat easily; check for interference from wiring or clips.
- 10Connect cluster electrical connectorsConnect each electrical connector to the rear of the instrument cluster, ensuring each one clicks firmly into place and the locking tab engages. Connect the main harness connector first, followed by any secondary connectors. Verify all connectors are fully seated by gently tugging on each one. Ensure no wiring is pinched or stretched.
- 11Secure cluster to dashboardWhile supporting the cluster, install all four T25 Torx mounting screws with any spacers or washers in their original positions. Tighten screws in a cross pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) to ensure even seating. Snug screws firmly but do not overtighten as the cluster housing may be plastic.
- 12Reinstall trim bezelIf the bezel has any electrical connectors (ambient light sensor), connect them first. Align the bezel with the dashboard opening and the instrument cluster. Starting at the top, press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Verify the bezel is flush and even around all edges.
- 13Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and secure with T20 Torx screws. Install the lower steering column cover, connecting any electrical connectors, and secure with T20 Torx screws. Verify both covers are properly aligned and seated.
- 14Reconnect vehicle electrical systemsReconnect the 12V battery negative terminal and tighten securely. Put on high-voltage safety gloves and reinstall the high-voltage service disconnect plug until it clicks into place. Verify the disconnect is fully seated and locked.
- 15Program and configure replacement clusterConnect Rivian diagnostic equipment to the vehicle's OBD-II port. Power on the vehicle and access the cluster programming module. Perform VIN programming and configuration transfer from the old cluster. Follow all prompts to complete calibration and verify all cluster functions are operational through the diagnostic software.
Reassembly
- Reassembly is covered in the removal steps above, performed in reverse order
- Ensure all trim clips are properly engaged and panels are flush before final verification
- Verify steering column covers do not interfere with steering wheel adjustment or tilt function
Verification
- With the vehicle powered on, verify the instrument cluster illuminates and displays all warning lights during the startup sequence
- Confirm all gauges, indicators, and displays are functioning correctly including speedometer, battery charge level, and warning lights
- Test all cluster functions including trip computer, settings menus, and display brightness adjustment
- Verify vehicle VIN and mileage display correctly on the replacement cluster
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using scan tool and clear if related to cluster disconnection
- Test drive the vehicle briefly to verify speedometer, power meter, and all dynamic displays function correctly
- Confirm no warning lights remain illuminated after programming and all systems communicate properly with the cluster
