Turn Signal Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the turn signal switch assembly on a 2023 Rivian EDV 500 commercial van, including steering column cover removal and electrical connector access.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure vehicle is powered off completely
3. Open driver's door and leave open for access
4. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal located in front trunk area
5. Wait minimum 2 minutes for electrical system capacitors to discharge
6. Adjust steering wheel to lowest and most forward position for access
7. Take photographs of steering column area for reference

Procedure

   Remove lower steering column cover
   Locate the two T20 Torx screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove both screws and carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing the retaining clips. Set aside the lower cover and screws.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   Identify the T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2-3 screws located at the top rear of the cover). Remove all screws and lift the upper cover off the steering column, being careful not to snag any wiring. Note the position of any wire routing clips.

   Access turn signal switch mounting
   With both covers removed, locate the turn signal switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Identify the wiring harness connector(s) leading to the switch and the mounting hardware (typically two T30 Torx screws or 10mm bolts).

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the primary electrical connector for the turn signal switch. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight off. If present, disconnect any secondary connectors for integrated features (cruise control, wiper controls). Ensure no tension is applied to wiring harnesses.

   Remove turn signal switch mounting fasteners
   Using a T30 Torx driver or 10mm socket, remove the two mounting fasteners securing the turn signal switch to the steering column bracket. Support the switch assembly as you remove the final fastener to prevent it from dropping.

   Remove turn signal switch assembly
   Carefully slide the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column, guiding the wiring harness through any routing clips or brackets. Take note of any spacers or alignment pins that may be present. Remove the old switch completely from the vehicle.

   Inspect mounting area and clean contacts
   Inspect the steering column mounting points for damage or wear. Check the electrical connector pins on the column harness for corrosion or damage. If needed, use electrical contact cleaner on the connector pins and allow to dry completely. Verify the clockspring is properly centered and not damaged.

   Position new turn signal switch
   Align the new turn signal switch assembly with the mounting bracket on the steering column. Ensure any alignment pins or tabs are properly seated. Route the wiring harness through the appropriate clips and verify there is no interference with steering column movement.

   Install mounting fasteners
   Install the two mounting fasteners (T30 Torx screws or 10mm bolts) hand-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once both are started, tighten alternately in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten firmly but do not overtighten plastic mounting points.

    Connect electrical connectors
    Connect the primary electrical connector to the turn signal switch, ensuring it clicks fully into place with the locking tab engaged. Connect any secondary connectors for integrated controls. Gently tug each connector to verify secure connection.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Route all wiring through appropriate channels in the upper cover. Position the upper steering column cover and install the T20 Torx screws, starting them all before fully tightening. Install the lower cover, ensuring all clips engage properly, then install its T20 Torx screws. Verify covers are flush and secure.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column cover fasteners are tight and covers are properly seated
2. Verify no wiring is pinched between covers or near moving steering components
3. Check that the turn signal stalk operates smoothly through its full range of motion
4. Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal

Verification

• Power on the vehicle and verify the instrument cluster displays no warning lights related to turn signals
• Test left and right turn signal operation and verify proper flashing on dash and exterior lights
• Test hazard light function to verify both sides operate simultaneously
• If equipped, verify cruise control and wiper control functions on the turn signal stalk
• Cycle the steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to ensure no interference or binding
• Test high beam and passing lamp functions if integrated into the switch
• Perform a short test drive to verify all functions work correctly under normal driving conditions
