Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery located in front trunk area
- Wait 2 minutes for electrical systems to fully discharge
- Roll window down approximately 2 inches to prevent damage during door panel removal
- Prepare a clean workspace to lay the door panel face-down during speaker replacement
Procedure
- 1Remove door pull handle trimUsing a trim removal tool, carefully pry out the door pull handle trim cover starting at the rear edge. Work around the perimeter to release all clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for window switches or door lighting if equipped on this section.
- 2Remove door panel fastenersLocate and remove all T20 and T25 Torx screws securing the door panel. Typical locations include: behind door pull handle (2 screws), lower rear corner of panel (1 screw), and inside door release handle cavity (1 screw). Store fasteners in a magnetic tray organized by location.
- 3Release door panel clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner, use a trim panel tool to gently pry the door panel away from the door frame. Work your way around the perimeter, releasing each clip with a firm but controlled pulling motion. Listen for the pop of each clip releasing. Do not force clips that do not release easily.
- 4Disconnect door panel electrical connectorsOnce panel clips are released, lift the door panel upward slightly to clear the window sill, then angle it away from the door. Locate all electrical connectors on the backside of the panel including power window, door lock, speaker, and ambient lighting connectors. Press release tabs and disconnect each connector. Note connector orientations for reassembly.
- 5Remove door panel and access speakerWith all connectors disconnected, remove the door panel completely and set it face-down on a protected surface. Peel back the vapor barrier partially if present to access the speaker mounting area. The speaker will be visible mounted to the door panel or door frame depending on design.
- 6Disconnect speaker electrical connectorLocate the speaker electrical connector. Press the release tab and disconnect the speaker harness. If the speaker is mounted to the door frame rather than the panel, you may need to reach through the door access hole to disconnect it.
- 7Remove speaker mounting fastenersRemove the speaker mounting screws using a T20 or T25 Torx driver or 10mm socket depending on fastener type. Rivian typically uses 3-4 fasteners per speaker. Support the speaker while removing the final fastener to prevent it from falling.
- 8Remove defective speakerCarefully extract the speaker from its mounting location. Note the orientation and any gasket or seal material. If a foam gasket is present and reusable, set it aside for reinstallation. If damaged, replace with new gasket material.
- 9Install replacement speakerPosition the new speaker in the mounting location ensuring proper orientation. Verify any gasket or seal is properly seated. Align all mounting holes before starting fasteners. Install and snug all mounting fasteners finger-tight, then tighten in a crossing pattern to ensure even seating.
- 10Connect speaker electrical connectorConnect the speaker electrical harness to the new speaker. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the locking tab engages with an audible click. Gently tug the connection to verify it is secure.
- 11Test speaker operationTemporarily reconnect the 12V battery and power on the vehicle. Test speaker operation using the audio system at various volume levels and frequencies. Test fade and balance controls to isolate the replaced speaker. Verify no distortion or rattles. Disconnect battery again before continuing.
- 12Reinstall door panelReconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel ensuring each locks securely. Position the vapor barrier if disturbed. Align the door panel to the window sill and hook the top edge over the door frame. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips until each clicks into place.
- 13Reinstall door panel fastenersInstall all T20 and T25 Torx screws in their original locations. Tighten screws snugly but do not overtighten as this can strip plastic threads or crack the panel. Reinstall door pull handle trim cover by aligning clips and pressing firmly until seated.
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are fully seated and panel is flush with door frame around entire perimeter
- Verify all trim pieces and fasteners are reinstalled in original locations
- Reconnect 12V auxiliary battery and secure battery hold-down
- Test window operation to ensure no interference with door panel
- Inspect door panel gaps and alignment with adjacent body panels
Verification
- Power on vehicle and test all door functions including window, lock, and interior lighting
- Test speaker at various volume levels and audio frequencies to confirm proper operation
- Use balance and fade controls to verify the replaced speaker is functioning correctly
- Listen for any rattles or vibrations from door panel at different audio levels
- Verify no warning messages appear on instrument cluster related to door or audio system
- Open and close door several times to ensure panel is secure and clips are properly seated
