Trunk/Liftgate Actuator

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the trunk/liftgate actuator on a 2024 Rivian EDV 500, including access through interior trim panels and electrical connector disconnection.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Open the rear trunk/liftgate to full open position
3. Install a mechanical liftgate support prop or have an assistant ready to support the liftgate weight
4. Disconnect the 12-volt battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
5. Remove any cargo or items from the trunk area to provide clear working space
6. Verify replacement actuator part number matches OEM specification for EDV 500 model

Procedure

   Secure liftgate in open position
   With the liftgate fully open, install a suitable mechanical prop or support device to hold the liftgate. The actuator will be disconnected and will no longer provide support. Verify the support is secure before proceeding.

   Remove liftgate interior trim panel
   Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry out the retaining clips securing the liftgate interior trim panel. Start at the bottom corners and work your way around the perimeter. There are typically 8-12 push clips. Set the panel aside in a safe location to avoid damage.

   Locate trunk actuator assembly
   With the trim panel removed, locate the trunk actuator motor assembly mounted on the driver's side of the liftgate frame. The actuator is typically mounted near the hinge area and connects to the liftgate via a linkage arm.

   Disconnect electrical connector
   Locate the main electrical connector to the actuator. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector. If equipped with a secondary position lock, slide it outward first. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage.

   Disconnect actuator linkage
   Locate the ball joint or pivot connection between the actuator arm and the liftgate mechanism. Remove the retaining clip (usually a spring clip or push pin) and separate the actuator arm from the linkage. Note the orientation for reassembly.

   Remove actuator mounting bolts
   Remove the mounting bolts securing the actuator to the liftgate frame using a 10mm or 13mm socket (typically 3-4 bolts). Support the actuator while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling. Note bolt locations and lengths if they differ.

   Remove old actuator
   Carefully maneuver the actuator assembly out of the liftgate area. You may need to rotate or angle the unit to clear surrounding structures. Inspect the mounting area for damage or debris.

   Prepare new actuator
   Unpack the new actuator and verify it matches the original unit. Check that the actuator is in the correct position for installation (typically in the retracted or neutral position). Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector terminals.

   Install new actuator
   Position the new actuator into the liftgate mounting location, aligning the mounting holes. Hand-start all mounting bolts before tightening any. Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern to manufacturer specification. Since torque specifications are not available in the database, tighten to moderate snugness (approximately 15-20 ft-lbs) and verify there is no movement.

    Connect actuator linkage
    Reconnect the actuator arm to the liftgate linkage mechanism, ensuring the ball joint or pivot connection is fully seated. Install the retaining clip and verify it is locked in place. Check for smooth movement of the linkage.

    Reconnect electrical connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector to the actuator, ensuring it clicks into place. If equipped with a secondary position lock, slide it back into the locked position. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.

    Reinstall trim panel
    Position the liftgate interior trim panel back into place. Press firmly around all perimeter areas to re-engage the retaining clips. Replace any damaged clips with new ones. Verify the panel is flush and secure.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the 12-volt battery negative terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the vehicle. The system may require initialization. Follow any on-screen prompts on the center display regarding liftgate calibration.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify all mounting bolts are tightened securely
3. Confirm trim panel clips are properly engaged with no gaps
4. Remove mechanical support prop only after verifying actuator function

Verification

• With the vehicle in the ON position, use the key fob or interior button to cycle the liftgate through full open and close operations at least three times
• Verify the liftgate opens and closes smoothly without binding or unusual noises
• Test the obstruction detection feature by placing a soft object in the liftgate path during closing
• Check that the power liftgate stops and reverses when meeting resistance
• Verify all liftgate control methods work: key fob, interior button, exterior button, and kick sensor if equipped
• Confirm there are no warning lights or error messages on the instrument cluster related to the liftgate system
• If error codes persist, professional scan tool diagnosis and module programming may be required
