Turn Signal Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the turn signal switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2024 Rivian EDV 500.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Place vehicle in service mode using center display menu (Settings > Service Mode)
3. Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait minimum 5 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
4. Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position
5. Lower steering column to lowest position for easier access
6. Cover seats and dashboard with protective material to prevent damage

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove lower steering column covers
   Use panel removal tool to carefully pry out the lower steering column cover. Start at the bottom rear edge and work around the perimeter. Remove T20 Torx screws securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws). Separate the lower cover from the column and set aside.

   Remove upper steering column cover
   Locate and remove T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws at the bottom edge). Carefully lift the upper cover, ensuring any wiring for column-mounted switches clears the opening. Disconnect any electrical connectors if present on the cover itself.

   Access turn signal switch mounting
   With both column covers removed, locate the turn signal/multifunction switch assembly on the left side of the steering column. Identify the main wiring harness connector(s) feeding the switch assembly. Take photos of connector positions and wire routing for reference during reinstallation.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the locking tab on the main turn signal switch connector. Press the release tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the switch housing. If multiple connectors are present, label each one with tape to ensure correct reconnection. Inspect connector pins for any damage or corrosion.

   Remove switch mounting fasteners
   Locate the T25 Torx screws securing the turn signal switch to the steering column housing (typically 2 screws). Remove these screws completely and retain them for reinstallation. Note the position of any alignment pins or guides on the switch assembly.

   Remove turn signal switch assembly
   Carefully slide the turn signal switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have tabs or guides that need to be disengaged by pulling at a specific angle (typically slightly outward then away). Avoid forcing the switch as internal guides may bind if not properly aligned during removal.

   Inspect mounting area and column
   With the switch removed, inspect the steering column mounting surface for any damage, debris, or bent pins. Check the wiring harness for any chafing, cuts, or exposed wires. Clean the mounting surface with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

   Prepare new switch assembly
   Remove the new turn signal switch from packaging. Verify the new switch matches the old unit in connector configuration and mounting points. Inspect all connectors and mounting tabs on the new switch for any shipping damage.

   Install new turn signal switch
   Align the new switch assembly with the mounting guides on the steering column. Slide the switch into position, ensuring any alignment pins engage properly. The switch should seat flush against the column housing without forcing.

    Secure switch mounting fasteners
    Install the T25 Torx screws through the switch mounting holes into the steering column. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten screws snugly but do not overtighten as this may crack the plastic housing.

    Reconnect electrical connectors
    Reconnect the electrical connector(s) to the turn signal switch, ensuring each connector is fully seated and the locking tab clicks into place. Gently tug on each connector to verify secure connection. Route wiring to match original configuration documented in photos.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Install T20 Torx screws to secure the upper cover. Position the lower cover and install its T20 Torx screws. Verify all cover clips are fully engaged and covers fit flush.

    Reconnect battery and exit service mode
    Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Enter the vehicle and use the center display to exit service mode (Settings > Service Mode > Exit). Allow vehicle systems to initialize, which may take 1-2 minutes.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly aligned and all mounting clips are fully engaged
2. Verify no wiring is pinched between covers or column components
3. Check that steering wheel position is still centered and column adjustment functions properly

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and verify turn signal indicators illuminate on instrument cluster when switch is activated in both left and right positions
• Test hazard light function by pressing hazard button and verify all turn signals flash
• Verify high beam, low beam, and flash-to-pass functions operate correctly
• Test windshield wiper switch functions including all speed settings and washer activation
• Check that no warning lights related to lighting or switch systems appear on instrument cluster
• Verify turn signal auto-cancel function operates when steering wheel is rotated through a turn
• Test all multifunction switch functions including cruise control buttons if integrated into the switch assembly
