Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers the replacement of the Level 1 charging cable (120V EVSE) for the 2025 Rivian EDV 500, including removal of the damaged cable and installation of a new unit.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect the 12V auxiliary battery before servicing any charging system components to prevent electrical shock or system damage.
Do not attempt to modify or repair the charging cable itself. The Level 1 EVSE must be replaced as a complete assembly if damaged.
Inspect the vehicle's charging port for debris, corrosion, or damage before installing the new cable. Port damage may indicate a larger electrical issue.
ℹ️The Level 1 charging cable is stored in a dedicated compartment in the rear cargo area of the EDV 500.

Parts

  • Level 1 Charging Cable Assembly (120V EVSE) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Charging port connector seal × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure vehicle is powered off and key fob is at least 15 feet away from the vehicle
  3. Open rear cargo doors to access charging cable storage compartment
  4. Disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and wait 5 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  5. Document any charging error codes from the vehicle's display system before beginning work

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access charging cable storage compartment
Locate the charging cable storage compartment on the driver's side rear cargo area. Use the trim panel removal tool to carefully release the four retaining clips securing the compartment cover. Remove the cover and set aside.
  2. 2
    Remove cable retention straps
Release the two Velcro cable retention straps securing the Level 1 charging cable in the storage compartment. Fully extend the cable from the compartment to access the cable management bracket.
  3. 3
    Disconnect cable from vehicle harness
Locate the charging cable connector at the base of the storage compartment. Press the release tab on the gray connector housing and pull straight out to disconnect the cable from the vehicle charging system harness. Inspect connector pins for any corrosion or damage.
  4. 4
    Remove cable mounting bracket
Using the 10mm socket, remove the two bolts securing the charging cable mounting bracket to the cargo floor. Lift the bracket away and remove the old charging cable assembly from the vehicle completely.
  5. 5
    Inspect charging port and connector
With the cable removed, visually inspect the vehicle harness connector for bent pins, corrosion, or heat damage. Check the charging port door operation and inspect the port contacts. Clean any debris with compressed air if needed.
  6. 6
    Prepare new charging cable
Unpack the new Level 1 charging cable assembly and verify it matches the original configuration. Check that the connector seal is properly seated in the vehicle-side connector. If supplied separately, install the new seal onto the cable connector.
  7. 7
    Install new cable mounting bracket
Position the mounting bracket with the new charging cable into the storage compartment. Align the bracket holes with the cargo floor mounting points and install the two 10mm bolts. Tighten bolts securely but do not overtighten to avoid cracking the composite floor panel.
  8. 8
    Connect cable to vehicle harness
Align the charging cable connector with the vehicle harness connector, ensuring proper orientation. Push the connector together firmly until you hear and feel a positive click. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
    Route and secure cable
Coil the charging cable neatly in the storage compartment following the original routing path. Secure the cable with both Velcro retention straps, ensuring the cable is not kinked or twisted. Verify the cable can be fully extended without binding.
  10. 10
    Reinstall compartment cover
Position the storage compartment cover and align the four retaining clips with their receptacles. Press firmly on each clip location until all clips are fully engaged and the cover sits flush with the surrounding trim.
  11. 11
    Reconnect auxiliary battery
Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal. Ensure the connection is tight and secure. The vehicle may go through an initialization sequence when power is restored.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all storage compartment trim panels are properly secured and aligned
  2. Ensure no tools or parts were left in the cargo area
  3. Close all cargo doors and verify proper latching

Verification

  • Power on the vehicle and verify no charging system error messages appear on the display
  • Plug the Level 1 charging cable into a standard 120V household outlet
  • Connect the charging cable to the vehicle's charge port and verify charging begins normally
  • Monitor the first charging session for at least 10 minutes to confirm proper operation and no errors
  • Verify the charging indicator light on the cable shows proper operation (typically solid or pulsing green)
  • Disconnect the cable and verify it stores properly in the compartment with no interference
