This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the front door lock actuator on a 2025 Rivian EDV 500, including door panel removal and electrical disconnection.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect 12V battery before beginning work to prevent electrical shorts and unintended lock operation
⚠Door panel clips are fragile and easily broken during removal. Use proper trim tools and apply even pressure
ℹ️The high voltage system does not need to be disabled for this procedure, but avoid contact with orange HV cables
ℹ️Keep track of all fasteners as different lengths may be used in different locations

Parts
- Front door lock actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM Rivian specification
- Door panel clip set (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM Rivian specification
- Door panel fasteners (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Disconnect 12V battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes for capacitor discharge
- Open the door to be serviced and lower window fully to prevent damage
- Organize workspace and prepare magnetic parts tray for fasteners
- Take photos of door panel before removal for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel fastenersUsing T25 Torx driver, remove the two screws at the bottom of the door panel. Remove the T20 Torx screw behind the door handle pull. If equipped with puddle lights, carefully pry the light assembly out and disconnect the electrical connector.
- 2Remove door handle trim and mirror switch assemblyUse trim tool to carefully release the door handle trim bezel. Disconnect any electrical connectors behind it. Remove the mirror switch assembly by pressing the release tab and tilting forward, then disconnect the electrical connector.
- 3Release door panel clipsStarting at the bottom rear corner, use panel clip removal tool to carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel. Work methodically around the panel, applying even outward pressure. There are approximately 8-10 clips securing the panel. Lift the panel upward once clips are released to disengage from the window sill.
- 4Disconnect door panel electrical connectorsWith door panel partially removed, identify and disconnect all electrical connectors including door lock switch, window switch assembly, speaker connector, and ambient lighting if equipped. Note the routing of wiring harnesses for reassembly. Remove door panel and set aside in safe location.
- 5Remove water barrier accessCarefully peel back the water barrier membrane to access the door lock actuator. On Rivian EDV, this may be a plastic shield rather than traditional vapor barrier. Remove or fold back only the section necessary to access the actuator mounting area to maintain water seal integrity.
- 6Disconnect lock actuator linkageLocate the door lock actuator mounted on the door latch assembly. Carefully disconnect the plastic rod linkage connecting the actuator to the door latch mechanism. Use small flathead screwdriver to carefully release any retaining clips on the rod ends. Note the exact orientation and position of linkage for installation.
- 7Disconnect actuator electrical connectorPress the release tab on the actuator electrical connector and carefully pull straight out to disconnect. Check connector pins for corrosion or damage. If equipped with child lock actuator, disconnect that connector as well if it's part of the same assembly.
- 8Remove lock actuator mounting fastenersRemove the mounting fasteners securing the lock actuator to the door latch assembly using 10mm socket. Typically there are 2-3 bolts or screws. Support the actuator while removing the final fastener to prevent it from falling inside the door cavity.
- 9Remove old actuatorCarefully maneuver the lock actuator out of the door cavity, ensuring no linkage rods or wiring remain attached. Inspect the mounting location and latch mechanism for damage or excessive wear.
- 10Install new lock actuatorPosition the new lock actuator into the door cavity and align with mounting holes on the door latch assembly. Install and hand-tighten the mounting fasteners, then tighten securely with 10mm socket. Ensure the actuator is properly seated and does not contact the window regulator mechanism.
- 11Reconnect linkage and electricalReconnect the actuator electrical connector until it clicks into place. Attach the plastic rod linkage to the actuator and door latch, ensuring the retaining clips are fully seated. Verify linkage moves freely without binding.
- 12Test actuator operationTemporarily reconnect the 12V battery and test the lock actuator operation using both the key fob and interior switch. Verify smooth operation of lock and unlock functions. Check that door latches and unlatches properly. Disconnect battery again before proceeding.
- 13Reinstall water barrierCarefully press the water barrier membrane back into position, ensuring complete adhesion around all edges. If adhesive has lost effectiveness, apply new butyl tape or approved adhesive to maintain proper water seal.
- 14Reinstall door panelRoute all wiring harnesses through the door panel and reconnect all electrical connectors including window switch, lock switch, speaker, and lighting. Align door panel with window sill and push downward to engage the upper retention channel. Press firmly around perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Install all Torx fasteners and tighten securely. Reinstall mirror switch assembly, door handle trim, and puddle light if equipped.
Reassembly
- Double-check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all door panel clips are properly engaged and panel is secure
- Ensure no tools or parts were left inside the door cavity
- Reconnect 12V battery negative terminal
Verification
- Test door lock and unlock operation from key fob, verifying smooth actuator movement
- Test door lock and unlock from interior switch in both driver and passenger control
- Verify door opens and closes properly and latches securely
- Test window operation to ensure no interference with repaired components
- Check that all door panel switches and features function correctly
- Verify no unusual noises from door during lock/unlock cycles
- Confirm door seals properly and water barrier is intact
