Sunroof Switch

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the sunroof switch assembly in a 2025 Rivian EDV 500, including overhead console disassembly and electrical connector service.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Ensure vehicle is powered down completely (not in accessory or ready mode)
3. Open all doors to provide adequate lighting and access to overhead console
4. Locate and disconnect 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal; wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge
5. Gather all tools and new parts within easy reach

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove overhead console lens cover
   Using a trim panel tool, carefully pry the front edge of the overhead console lens cover starting at the passenger side. Work around the perimeter to release the retention clips. Gently pull the lens cover down and toward the rear of the vehicle to disengage the rear tabs.

   Access overhead console fasteners
   With the lens cover removed, locate the four T20 Torx screws securing the overhead console housing. These are positioned at each corner of the console assembly. Remove all four screws and retain them for reinstallation.

   Lower overhead console assembly
   Carefully lower the overhead console housing approximately 2-3 inches. Support the assembly with one hand while working to prevent strain on the electrical connectors. Do not pull down forcefully as multiple connectors are still attached.

   Disconnect interior lighting connectors
   Locate the two interior lighting connectors on the front portion of the overhead console. Press the release tab on each connector and pull straight apart. These are typically white or gray multi-pin connectors. Note their positions for reassembly.

   Disconnect sunroof switch connector
   Locate the sunroof switch connector toward the center-rear of the overhead console. This connector typically has a sliding lock tab. Push the lock tab toward the connector body, then press the release tab and pull the connector apart. Observe the connector orientation for proper reinstallation.

   Remove overhead console completely
   With all electrical connections disconnected, fully remove the overhead console assembly from the headliner. Place it on a clean, padded work surface with the component side facing up.

   Remove sunroof switch mounting screws
   Locate the two T25 Torx screws securing the sunroof switch assembly to the overhead console housing. These are typically on either side of the switch module. Remove both screws and retain them.

   Extract sunroof switch assembly
   Gently lift the sunroof switch assembly from the overhead console housing. The switch may have alignment tabs or guide posts that require a slight rocking motion to disengage. Inspect the connector pins on the back of the switch for damage or corrosion.

   Inspect and clean connector housing
   Examine the mating connector in the overhead console for debris, corrosion, or damaged pins. If necessary, use electrical contact cleaner and compressed air to clean the connector cavity. Ensure all pins are straight and properly aligned.

    Install new sunroof switch
    Position the new sunroof switch assembly into the overhead console housing, aligning the guide posts and ensuring the switch sits flush. Install the two T25 Torx screws and tighten securely by hand until snug. Do not overtighten as the housing is plastic.

    Reinstall overhead console
    Position the overhead console assembly near its mounting location. Reconnect the sunroof switch connector first, ensuring the lock tab fully engages. Then reconnect the two interior lighting connectors, listening for the click of each connector lock.

    Secure overhead console housing
    Align the overhead console with the headliner opening and press upward gently to seat it properly. Install the four T20 Torx screws at each corner, tightening in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Tighten until snug.

    Install lens cover
    Align the rear tabs of the overhead console lens cover with the housing slots and insert them first. Press around the perimeter of the lens cover firmly until all clips engage with an audible click.

    Reconnect 12V battery
    Reconnect the 12V auxiliary battery negative terminal and tighten securely. The vehicle may perform a brief system initialization when powered back on.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all trim clips are fully seated and the overhead console sits flush with the headliner
2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged with locking tabs secured
3. Check that interior lighting operates normally before testing sunroof function

Verification

• Power on the vehicle to accessory mode and verify interior lights function correctly
• Test sunroof switch operation in all directions: open, close, tilt up, tilt down
• Verify sunroof responds smoothly to all switch commands without hesitation or error messages
• Check that sunroof auto-open and auto-close functions work properly if equipped
• Confirm no warning lights or error messages appear on the instrument cluster
• Inspect overhead console for proper alignment and secure mounting with no rattles or gaps
