Replacement of the left-hand steering column stalk (turn signal switch) on a 2024 Tesla Cybertruck. The Cybertruck uses a steer-by-wire system with column-mounted stalks; no calibration of the steering rack is required for stalk replacement, but the column covers and a fragile ribbon/connector are involved.

Warnings

⚠️Cybertruck uses a 48V low-voltage system — NOT 12V. Shorting a 48V terminal carries significantly more arc/burn energy than a 12V Tesla. Use insulated tools and remove all jewelry.
⚠️Steer-by-wire: there is NO mechanical steering linkage. Do not disturb the steering yoke wiring, clockspring/slip-ring, or yoke control module while servicing the stalk. Damage here can disable steering.
Stainless exoskeleton and interior trim are unforgiving — do not pry against painted/anodized surfaces. Use plastic trim tools only.
Driver airbag is in the yoke. Do not remove the yoke for this job. If a yellow SRS connector is exposed, do not disturb it.
ℹ️After disconnecting 48V power, the truck may take longer than a 12V Tesla to fully wake/sleep. Allow the recommended downtime before touching electrical connectors.

Parts

  • Turn signal / multifunction stalk assembly (Cybertruck-specific, left column stalk) × 1 — OEM Tesla Cybertruck left-hand column stalk — confirm against VIN at parts counter

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob/card away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the low-voltage battery. NOTE: Cybertruck uses a 48V low-voltage architecture — locate the 48V battery per the Tesla Service Manual for this VIN and disconnect the negative terminal using insulated tools.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal at 800V on this platform.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Set the steering yoke to the straight-ahead position and lock it there with the yoke held by the seatbelt or a soft strap to prevent rotation while the column is open.
  7. Tilt and telescope the column fully out and down (if available) for access, then disable further column motor movement by leaving the vehicle powered off.
  8. Cover the driver seat and lower dash with a clean blanket to protect from dropped fasteners.

Procedure

  1. 1
Verify vehicle is fully powered down
Confirm the touchscreen is fully off and no HVAC/charging activity is occurring. Verify the 48V battery negative is disconnected and the terminal is isolated so it cannot spring back into contact.
  2. 2
Remove the lower steering column shroud
Locate and remove the fasteners securing the lower (under-side) steering column cover. These are typically small Torx or Phillips screws at the rear/underside of the shroud. Release any integrated clips with a plastic trim tool, working around the perimeter. Lower the cover away from the column.
Do not pull the cover forcefully — interior LED or trim lighting harnesses may be clipped to the inside surface.

  3. 3
Remove the upper steering column shroud
With the lower shroud out, release the upper shroud clips and lift it away from the column. If the shroud is captured by the yoke, do NOT force it past the yoke — instead route it carefully around the yoke spokes.
Do not rotate the yoke while shrouds are off — this can damage the clockspring/slip-ring assembly used by the steer-by-wire system.

  4. 4
Identify the left (turn signal) stalk
On the Cybertruck the multifunction/turn signal stalk mounts to a carrier on the left side of the steering column, behind the upper shroud. Identify its mounting screws and its electrical connector before disturbing anything. Photograph the harness routing for reference.
  5. 5
    Disconnect the stalk electrical connector
Release the connector lock tab and gently disconnect the stalk harness connector. If the connector is secured by a small retaining screw, remove it first. Do not pull on the wires — pull on the connector body only.
If you see a yellow connector (SRS/airbag) anywhere in this area, STOP. The turn signal stalk connector should not be yellow.

    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove the stalk mounting screws
Support the stalk with one hand and remove the manufacturer-specified mounting screws securing the stalk to the column carrier. Withdraw the stalk straight away from the column to avoid bending any locating tabs.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  7. 7
Inspect the column carrier and clockspring
With the stalk removed, inspect the carrier surface for debris, broken locating tabs, or signs of moisture. Confirm the clockspring/slip-ring assembly is undisturbed and centered. Do not rotate it.
⚠️If the clockspring has rotated or appears damaged, stop and consult a Tesla-certified technician — steer-by-wire and yoke control signals route through this assembly.
  8. 8
    Compare old and new stalks
Place the new stalk next to the old one and verify connector keying, lever length, detent feel, and mounting hole pattern match exactly. Cybertruck stalks are platform-specific — a Model 3/Y/S/X stalk will not function correctly even if it physically fits.
  9. 9
Install the new turn signal stalk
Align the new stalk to its locating features on the column carrier and start the mounting screws by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once seated, torque the mounting screws to specification.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect the stalk harness
Seat the harness connector fully until the lock tab clicks. If a connector retaining screw is used, install and torque it to specification. Verify the harness is routed clear of any moving column components.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the upper steering column shroud, ensuring all clips engage and the shroud does not contact the yoke through its full tilt/telescope range.
  2. Reinstall the lower shroud and torque its fasteners to the Steering Column Covers specification.
  3. Verify the stalk moves freely with proper detents in all positions (turn signals, high beam, wiper/other functions as equipped) before powering up.
  4. Reconnect the 48V low-voltage battery negative terminal using insulated tools and torque to the Terminal Bolts / Battery Terminal Bolts specification.
  5. Close the hood/frunk and any access panels disturbed.

Verification

  • Power the vehicle on and allow the touchscreen and instrument display to fully boot. Check for any new fault messages — particularly any related to steering, BCM, or stalk inputs.
  • With the vehicle in P, test left and right turn signals (single-tap lane change and full-detent), high-beam flash, high-beam latch, and any wiper/washer functions controlled by the same stalk if applicable.
  • Verify hazard lights still operate (separate circuit, but confirms no shared harness damage).
  • Slowly rotate the yoke lock-to-lock with the vehicle stationary and powered (steer-by-wire active) to confirm no binding or noise from the column shrouds, and no steering fault is set.
  • Road test at low speed in a safe area: confirm turn signal auto-cancel works after a turn, and that no SRS/steering warnings appear.
  • Note: This job is not on a scheduled service interval, but while the column is exposed it is a good opportunity to confirm the cabin air filter (2-year interval) and brake fluid (2-year interval) service status in the vehicle's service records.
