Replacement of the front wiper motor/linkage assembly on a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance. The wiper motor and linkage are a single serviceable assembly mounted under the cowl panel at the base of the windshield.

Warnings

⚠️The 12V low-voltage battery MUST be disconnected before unplugging the wiper motor connector. The wiper system can self-park unexpectedly and crush fingers.
Before removing the wiper arms, mark their park position on the windshield with masking tape. Mis-indexed arms will streak, hit the A-pillar trim, or contact the frunk lid edge on this Model 3.
The Model 3 hood (frunk) and cowl area use thin stamped aluminum and plastic. Do not pry against the painted hood edge — use protective tape and plastic trim tools only.
ℹ️After 12V disconnection, the touchscreen will require a brief reboot and windows may need re-calibration (one-touch auto re-learn).
Do not power-cycle the wiper switch with the linkage disconnected from the arms — the motor can rotate past its end stops and damage the park sensor.

Parts

  • Front wiper motor and linkage assembly × 1 — Tesla Model 3 (2024) front wiper motor/linkage — refer to VIN-specific parts catalog
  • Cowl panel clips / retainers (if damaged on removal) × 4 — OEM cowl retainer clips

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. On 2024 Model 3, the 12V (Li-ion) is accessed via the front trunk area / under the frunk tub on most builds — refer to architecture notes and the in-vehicle service mode disconnect procedure if available.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Place the wipers in 'service mode' / vertical service position via the touchscreen BEFORE disconnecting the 12V, if the vehicle is still powered. This positions the arms away from the cowl for easier removal.
  7. Open the frunk and protect the painted edge of the hood and the windshield base with painter's tape and a fender cover.
  8. Mark each wiper arm's rest/park position on the windshield glass with masking tape so the new motor can be indexed correctly.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove wiper arms
Pry up the plastic cap at the base of each wiper arm to expose the retaining nut. Loosen but do not fully remove the nut, then break the arm free of the splined shaft (a wiper arm puller is recommended to avoid prying against the cowl or glass). Remove the nut and lift each arm off. Note driver vs. passenger orientation.
Do not strike the wiper arm or pry against the windshield glass — Model 3 windshields are expensive and the cowl plastic is brittle in cold weather.
  2. 2
    Remove cowl panel and weatherstrip
Open the frunk. Remove the rubber hood-to-cowl weatherstrip by pulling it straight up off the cowl flange. Release the plastic cowl panel retainers using a trim tool, working from one end to the other. Lift the cowl panel up and away, disconnecting any washer hose or sensor connectors as needed. Set the panel aside on a soft surface.
ℹ️Inspect each retainer clip on removal — replace any that crack, as a loose cowl panel will whistle at highway speed.
  3. 3
Disconnect washer hose and any cowl sensors
If the washer hose, rain/light sensor harness, or HVAC intake screen is integrated with the cowl panel area, disconnect them now. Cap or position the washer hose to prevent fluid spillage onto painted surfaces.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the wiper motor electrical connector on the motor body. Release the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off. Inspect for corrosion or moisture intrusion — a common cause of wiper motor failure on this platform.
⚠️Confirm 12V is disconnected before unplugging — the motor can park unexpectedly and pinch fingers in the linkage.
  5. 5
Remove wiper motor and linkage assembly mounting bolts
The wiper motor on the Model 3 is integrated with the linkage frame as a single assembly bolted to the bulkhead/cowl structure with three bolts (typically two at the linkage pivots and one at the motor mount). Support the assembly with one hand and remove all mounting bolts. Lower the assembly out through the cowl opening.
The assembly is awkward to maneuver around the HVAC intake. Do not force it — rotate the motor end first to clear the bulkhead.

  6. 6
Transfer linkage if replacing motor only (or skip if replacing the assembly)
Tesla typically services the wiper motor and linkage as a single assembly. If the replacement part is the complete assembly, proceed to install. If servicing the motor alone is required, refer to the Tesla Service Manual for the linkage-to-motor crank arm indexing procedure — the crank arm MUST be installed at the correct park-position index or the wipers will sweep incorrectly.
Incorrect crank arm indexing is the #1 comeback on this repair. When in doubt, replace the motor + linkage as a complete assembly.
  7. 7
Install new wiper motor / linkage assembly
Maneuver the new assembly into position through the cowl opening. Hand-start all mounting bolts before torquing any of them. Ensure the rubber isolators (if equipped) are seated correctly in the bulkhead grommets.

  8. 8
    Torque mounting bolts
Torque the wiper assembly mounting bolts to the manufacturer-specified value. For un-listed Tesla-specific values, refer to the Tesla Service Manual.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Reseat the wiper motor electrical connector until the lock tab clicks. Verify it is fully seated — a partially seated connector will throw an intermittent wiper fault.
  10. 10
Cycle motor to confirm park position before reinstalling arms
Temporarily reconnect the 12V battery. With the cowl panel still off and arms NOT yet installed, briefly turn the wipers on and then off via the stalk/touchscreen so the motor self-parks. Then disconnect 12V again before further work. The output shaft splines now indicate the true park position for arm indexing.
Keep hands clear of the linkage during this test cycle.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the cowl panel: reconnect washer hose and any sensor connectors, align the panel to the bulkhead, and press in all retainer clips until fully seated.
  2. Reinstall the hood-to-cowl rubber weatherstrip, ensuring it seats fully along its entire length.
  3. Install the wiper arms onto the splined shafts so that each arm aligns with the masking tape park-position marks made during preparation. Hand-tighten the retaining nuts, verify alignment, then torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  4. Snap the plastic caps back over the wiper arm nuts.
  5. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery, torquing the terminal hardware to specification.
  6. Allow the vehicle to fully wake up and the touchscreen to reboot before testing.

Verification

  • Cycle wipers through all speeds (intermittent, low, high, single-wipe) and confirm smooth operation with no buzzing or hesitation.
  • Confirm both blades park fully below the painted black ceramic frit at the base of the windshield and do not contact the A-pillar trim or hood edge at the outer sweep.
  • Activate the washer fluid spray and confirm the wash-wipe sequence functions correctly (motor parks after the post-spray wipes).
  • Check the touchscreen Service menu / fault log for any wiper-related alerts and clear any stored DTCs.
  • Verify the cowl panel sits flush with the hood with no whistling at highway speed during a road test.
  • Top off windshield washer fluid if it was lost during cowl removal (system capacity ~3.5 qt).
  • Note: This repair is not on a scheduled service interval, but if the failure was caused by water ingress at the cowl, inspect the cowl drains and seals to prevent recurrence.
