Replacement of the overhead sunroof control switch on a 2024 Model X. The switch is integrated into the front overhead console alongside the dome light/SOS module, requiring careful removal of the headliner-adjacent trim without damaging the falcon door surrounds.

Warnings

⚠️Do NOT work near the falcon door hinge/sensor area with the doors powered. Falcon doors use ultrasonic and capacitive sensors and can actuate unexpectedly if 12V power is live.
The headliner on Model X is one-piece, fragile, and extremely expensive to replace. Do not pry against the headliner fabric — only against rigid trim edges.
Aluminum body construction — do not strike trim or surrounding panels with a hammer or hard tool to seat clips.
ℹ️Some overhead switch assemblies are paired/coded to the vehicle. After replacement, the switch may require a sunroof initialization (open/close calibration cycle) before normal operation resumes.

Tools required

Plastic trim removal tool set (nylon pry tools)Essential
Torx bit set (T20/T25)
10mm socket and ratchet (for 12V battery terminal)Essential
Microfiber cloth (to protect headliner)
ESD-safe gloves or anti-static wrist strap

Parts

  • Overhead console sunroof switch assembly (Model X 2024 specific) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified overhead switch module — match by VIN at parts counter

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery located in the frunk (similar position to Model S). Open the frunk before disconnecting since power-release will be unavailable afterward.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Disable falcon door auto-presenting/auto-close features in the touchscreen settings (if accessible) before the 12V is disconnected, to prevent unexpected actuation if 12V is later restored mid-job.
  7. Fully close the panoramic roof / sunroof before disconnecting 12V so the new switch can be calibrated against a known closed position.
  8. Allow the cabin to cool — overhead trim clips become brittle when hot and pry tools can mar softened plastic.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect the 12V battery
In the frunk, remove the access cover, then loosen the negative terminal first followed by positive. Isolate terminals with insulating caps or tape so they cannot contact the posts. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding.
With 12V disconnected, doors may not power-open. Ensure you have interior access before disconnecting.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Inspect the overhead console area
Locate the overhead switch panel containing the sunroof rocker/touch switch, dome lights, and microphone. Identify the seam between the switch bezel and the headliner. Note any visible screw covers (some Model X overhead modules use hidden Torx fasteners under small plastic plugs).
  3. 3
    Release the overhead switch bezel
Using a nylon trim tool wrapped in microfiber, gently pry at the rear edge of the overhead switch bezel first (away from the windshield). Work slowly around the perimeter to release the retaining clips. If resistance is felt at any point, stop and check for a hidden fastener — do not force.
Pry only against the rigid bezel — never against the headliner foam or fabric.
  4. 4
Lower the module and disconnect harnesses
Once clips release, lower the module a few inches. Identify each connector (sunroof switch, dome light, microphone, SOS/emergency call if equipped). Depress each locking tab and disconnect. Photograph orientation before removal to ensure correct reinstallation.
ℹ️Do not pull on wires — only on connector bodies. Some connectors have a secondary lock that must be lifted first.
  5. 5
Remove the failed switch from the module carrier
If the sunroof switch is a discrete sub-component, release its retaining tabs from the carrier and remove. If the switch is integrated into the full overhead module, the entire module is the serviceable part. Verify the replacement matches the original by part number and connector pinout before continuing.
  6. 6
Install the new switch / module
Seat the new switch into the carrier (or position the new module at the headliner opening). Reconnect each harness in the orientation noted earlier, ensuring locking tabs fully click. Tug-test each connector lightly.
  7. 7
Seat the bezel back into the headliner
Align the bezel/module with the headliner opening, ensuring no wires are pinched. Press evenly around the perimeter by hand until each clip seats with an audible click. Do not strike the trim. Verify there are no gaps along the edges.
A pinched wire near the falcon door header can chafe through and cause intermittent door faults — verify no harness is trapped along the bezel edge.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the 12V battery: positive terminal first, then negative. Torque battery terminal bolts to spec — do not overtighten.
  2. Close the frunk access cover and frunk lid.
  3. Allow the vehicle to wake fully (touchscreen boots, dashcluster initializes) before testing.
  4. Re-enable any falcon door features that were disabled during prep.

Verification

  • Press the sunroof switch in the OPEN direction — verify the panoramic roof responds correctly and reaches full open without binding.
  • Press CLOSE — verify it fully seats and the auto-stop/anti-pinch behavior is functional (test with a soft object if comfortable).
  • If the sunroof refuses to operate or only moves while the switch is held (no one-touch), perform a sunroof initialization: typically hold the switch in the close direction until the roof completes a full close-open-close calibration cycle. Refer to the Tesla Service Manual for the model-year specific procedure if behavior is abnormal.
  • Verify the dome lights, microphone (voice commands), and SOS button (if equipped) all still function — confirming no connector was left unseated.
  • Walk around the falcon doors and cycle each one to confirm the overhead sensors still see correct clearance — a misseated overhead trim panel can affect ultrasonic sensor alignment.
  • While the panel is open is also a good time to note service intervals: cabin air filter is due every 2 years (3 years on HEPA/Bioweapon Defense-equipped Model X). Mention this to the customer if applicable.
