Replacement of the front wiper motor assembly on a 2024 Tesla Model X. The wiper linkage and motor are accessed by removing the cowl panel below the windshield after lifting the frunk and removing surrounding trim.

Warnings

⚠️Do not touch, cut, or pierce any orange high-voltage cable. The HV pack is floor-mounted on Model X — keep all tools clear of the underbody during this job.
Falcon doors: keep them closed and key fob out of range during the entire procedure. Unexpected falcon door movement near a technician working at the cowl can cause injury.
Aluminum body panels — do not strike with a hammer. Use a wiper arm puller to release stuck wiper arms; prying will dent or scratch the cowl and hood.
Air suspension is standard on Model X. Do not jack or lift the vehicle without first placing it in Jack Mode via the touchscreen if any lifting is required (not typically needed for this job).
ℹ️Mark wiper park position on the windshield with painter's tape before removing the arms — incorrect reinstall position causes wiper-to-A-pillar contact or poor sweep coverage.

Tools required

Trim removal tool set (plastic pry tools)Essential
Torx bit set (T20-T30)Essential

Painter's tape (to mark wiper park position)

Parts

  • Front wiper motor and linkage assembly (OEM Tesla Model X) × 1 — Manufacturer-specified front wiper motor/linkage assembly for 2024 Model X
  • Cowl panel clips/retainers (replace any that break on removal) × 1 — OEM Tesla cowl retainer clips

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery, located in the frunk on Model X (similar position to Model S). Follow the manufacturer-specified disconnect sequence: remove cover, loosen negative terminal first.
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Before disconnecting 12V: turn the wipers ON briefly, then OFF, so they return to the park position. This makes it easier to mark and re-index them.
  7. Mark the resting position of each wiper blade on the windshield with painter's tape.
  8. Open the frunk and remove any frunk liner/trim necessary to access the rear edge of the frunk tub and cowl area.
  9. Have replacement clips on hand — Tesla cowl retainers commonly break on removal.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Confirm 12V is disconnected
Verify the 12V negative terminal in the frunk is fully disconnected and isolated. Confirm the touchscreen is off and the vehicle is unresponsive to door handle inputs before working near electrical connectors.
  2. 2
    Remove wiper arms
Lift the plastic cap at the base of each wiper arm to expose the retaining nut. Remove the nut. Use a wiper arm puller to lift the arm straight off the splined shaft. Set arms aside in a way that preserves left/right orientation.
Do not pry the arms off with a screwdriver against the cowl or windshield — Model X uses a bonded windshield and painted aluminum cowl trim that damages easily.
  3. 3
    Remove cowl panel and weatherstrip
Peel back the rubber hood-to-cowl weatherstrip. Release the cowl panel retaining clips using a plastic trim tool, working from one end to the other. Lift the cowl panel up and forward to disengage it from the windshield edge. Disconnect any washer hose or sensor connectors before fully removing.
ℹ️Inspect cowl drain channels while open — leaves and debris commonly accumulate here on Model X and can cause water intrusion to the wiper motor.
  4. 4
    Disconnect wiper motor electrical connector
Locate the wiper motor electrical harness connector on the motor body. Release the locking tab and unplug. Inspect the connector for corrosion or water intrusion — a common cause of wiper failure on vehicles with clogged cowl drains.
  5. 5
Unbolt wiper motor / linkage assembly from cowl
The Model X front wiper motor is integrated with the linkage frame and bolts to the cowl/firewall structure. Remove the assembly's mounting fasteners (typically three bolts securing the linkage frame to the body). Support the assembly as the last bolt is removed.

  6. 6
    Remove assembly from vehicle
Maneuver the wiper motor and linkage assembly out through the cowl opening. Note the orientation of the linkage and the routing of the harness for reinstallation.
  7. 7
    Transfer components if required
If the replacement is a bare motor (not a full linkage assembly), transfer the linkage to the new motor per the manufacturer-specified procedure, ensuring the motor is in the park position and the linkage is indexed correctly. If a full assembly was supplied, skip this step.
Incorrect indexing of motor crank to linkage will cause wiper park position to be wrong and may drive the blades off the windshield into the A-pillar trim.
  8. 8
Install new wiper motor / linkage assembly
Position the new assembly into the cowl cavity, aligning mounting points with the body studs/holes. Hand-start all fasteners before torquing. Torque the linkage frame mounting bolts to the manufacturer specification.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Plug the wiper harness into the new motor until the locking tab clicks. Ensure the connector seal is fully seated to prevent water intrusion.
  10. 10
    Reinstall cowl panel
Reconnect any washer hoses/sensor connectors to the cowl. Seat the panel along the windshield edge and press all retainer clips home. Reinstall the hood-to-cowl weatherstrip. Replace any clips that broke during removal.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall both wiper arms onto their splined shafts, aligning the blade tips with the painter's tape marks made earlier.
  2. Install the wiper arm retaining nuts and torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Snap the plastic caps back over the nuts.
  3. Reconnect the 12V battery in the frunk: positive first, then negative. Torque the 12V battery terminal bolts using the Battery Terminal Bolts spec — do not overtighten.
  4. Reinstall any frunk liner or trim that was removed for access.
  5. Close the frunk and verify it latches fully.

Verification

  • With the key fob present, wake the vehicle and confirm the touchscreen boots normally and shows no new error messages related to body control or wipers.
  • Spray washer fluid via the stalk control and confirm the wipers cycle through low, high, and intermittent speeds.
  • Confirm the wipers return cleanly to the marked park position after turning off — no slamming into the A-pillar trim, no overshoot off the windshield.
  • Run the wipers across a wet windshield and confirm full sweep coverage on both driver and passenger sides with no chatter or skipping.
  • Check washer fluid level — Model X capacity is approximately 3.5 qt; top off if needed.
  • After completion, verify the falcon doors still operate normally (open/close from the touchscreen and door buttons) — power cycling the 12V occasionally requires the doors to re-learn their travel limits on first cycle.
  • Note for the owner: while the cowl was open, this is a good time to confirm the cabin air filter service interval (every 2 years standard, every 3 years for HEPA-equipped Model X). Cabin filter replacement is a separate job.
