Replacement of a front brake hose on a 2024 Tesla Model X Plaid. The hose carries DOT 3 brake fluid from the hard line to the front caliper; the system must be bled after replacement.

Warnings

⚠️Air suspension is standard on Model X. Before lifting, place the vehicle in Jack Mode via the touchscreen to prevent the suspension from self-leveling and dropping the vehicle off the lift.
⚠️Do NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange cable. HV cabling routes along the floor pan adjacent to the floor-mounted battery pack.
Falcon doors: keep them closed during the entire procedure. Opening/closing them with the 12V disconnected or the vehicle on a lift can cause sensor faults or door-to-structure contact.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic and will damage paint. Cover painted surfaces and wipe spills immediately. Use only fresh DOT 3 from a sealed bottle.
Aluminum body and suspension components — do not strike with a steel hammer. Use a dead-blow if persuasion is needed.
ℹ️Tesla recommends a brake fluid flush every 2 years regardless of mileage. If fluid is overdue, perform a full system flush rather than just bleeding the affected corner.

Parts

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Before lifting, enable Jack Mode on the touchscreen (Controls > Service > Jack Mode) to disable air suspension self-leveling.
  4. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery in the frunk per Tesla service procedure (remove frunk liner, disconnect negative terminal, isolate).
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  6. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  7. Confirm the side (LH/RH) of the failed hose and have the correct replacement part on hand.
  8. Top off the brake fluid reservoir to MAX so it does not run dry while the hose is open.
  9. Loosen the front lug nuts a quarter turn before lifting.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Lift vehicle and remove front wheel
    Lift the vehicle at the manufacturer-specified front jack point using approved Tesla pucks. Support on jack stands rated for vehicle weight. Remove the lug nuts and front wheel on the affected side.
    Model X curb weight exceeds 5,400 lb. Use jack stands rated accordingly.

    Position drip pan and protect surfaces
    Place a drip pan beneath the caliper area. Drape clean rags around the strut and any painted suspension components to absorb fluid drips.

    Clamp the flexible hose (optional but recommended)
    If using a brake hose clamp, gently pinch the flexible section of the hose to minimize fluid loss. Do not over-clamp internal-reinforced lines if the manufacturer prohibits it — when in doubt, skip and accept fluid loss.

    Disconnect hard line from upper end of brake hose
    Using a flare-nut wrench, loosen and disconnect the steel hard line fitting at the upper end of the flexible hose at the chassis bracket. Hold the hose hex with a backup wrench to prevent twisting. Cap or plug the hard line immediately to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
    Use a flare-nut wrench, not an open-end wrench, to avoid rounding the fitting.

    Release hose from chassis bracket
    Remove the retaining clip securing the brake hose to the chassis bracket and free the hose from the bracket. Inspect the clip for damage; replace if bent or corroded.

    Remove intermediate hose retaining hardware
    If the hose is secured to the strut or knuckle by an intermediate bracket, remove the retaining bolt. Note routing and clocking of the hose for reinstallation.

    Disconnect banjo fitting at caliper
    Place a catch container under the caliper. Unscrew the banjo bolt at the caliper inlet and remove the brake hose. Discard both copper washers — they must be replaced. Allow residual fluid to drain into the catch container.
    Never reuse copper crush washers — they will leak under brake pressure.

    Install new brake hose at caliper
    Place a new copper washer on each side of the banjo fitting eyelet. Install the banjo bolt through the new hose into the caliper. Ensure the hose anti-rotation tab seats in its locating feature on the caliper. Hand-thread first, then torque the banjo bolt.
    Verify the hose is not twisted and that the anti-rotation tab is fully seated before final torque.

    Route hose and secure intermediate bracket
    Route the new hose along the original path with no twists, kinks, or contact with suspension or steering components throughout the full range of motion. Secure any intermediate bracket bolt(s).

    Reattach hose to chassis bracket and reconnect hard line
    Seat the upper end of the hose into the chassis bracket and install the retaining clip fully. Thread the hard line fitting into the hose by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a flare-nut wrench. Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
    If the hard line fitting feels gritty or threads poorly, stop and inspect — a cross-threaded fitting will leak under pressure.

    Bleed the affected corner
    Top off the master cylinder reservoir with fresh DOT 3. Attach a clear hose to the caliper bleeder screw and submerge the end in a small amount of clean fluid in a catch bottle. Using a pressure bleeder or two-person pedal method, bleed the caliper until clean, air-free fluid flows. Keep the reservoir topped off throughout — do not allow it to run dry.
    ℹ️On Tesla vehicles, a full electronic bleed using factory diagnostic software may be required if air entered the ABS/iBooster module. If pedal feel is not firm after manual bleeding, a Tesla-certified shop will need to perform a scan-tool bleed.

    Final leak check under pressure
    With the bleeder closed and reservoir at MAX, have an assistant apply firm, sustained pedal pressure while you inspect the banjo fitting and upper hard-line fitting for any weeping or seepage. Wipe joints dry first so any new wetness is obvious.

Reassembly

  1. Confirm reservoir is filled to MAX with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid and the cap is sealed.
  2. Reinstall the front wheel and hand-thread all lug nuts.
  3. Lower vehicle to the ground.
  4. Torque the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  5. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the frunk and reinstall the frunk liner.
  6. Exit Jack Mode by lowering the vehicle and pressing the brake pedal / driving as prompted by the touchscreen.
  7. Cycle the brake pedal 10–15 times before driving to ensure firm pedal.

Verification

  • Pedal feel is firm and consistent — no spongy travel. If spongy, air remains in the system and additional bleeding (possibly with Tesla diagnostic software for ABS bleed) is required.
  • No fluid weeping at the banjo fitting, intermediate bracket, or hard-line junction after a road test.
  • Reservoir level is at MAX and the dashboard shows no brake-related alerts.
  • After a low-speed road test with several moderate stops, re-inspect the caliper banjo and upper fittings for leaks.
  • Confirm air suspension self-leveling resumes correctly after exiting Jack Mode.
  • Reminder: Tesla recommends a complete brake fluid flush every 2 years regardless of mileage — log this service date and schedule the next flush accordingly.
