Warnings

⚠️Falcon doors can self-actuate if the vehicle wakes. Keep the key fob at least 30 ft away and disconnect the 12V before working under or beside the vehicle.
⚠️Do not touch or pierce any orange high-voltage cable running along the underbody. The HV pack is floor-mounted on Model X — route brake lines and tools clear of pack penetrations.
Air suspension may auto-level or vent when the 12V is reconnected. Place the vehicle in Jack/Service Mode via the touchscreen before disconnecting the 12V to disable suspension and falcon door movement.
Brake fluid destroys paint and aluminum body finish. Model X uses an aluminum-intensive body — wipe spills immediately with water.
Modern Tesla brake systems use an electronic booster (iBooster-type). A full system bleed typically requires a diagnostic tool to cycle the booster/ABS — a manual bleed alone may not purge all air.
ℹ️Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage. Document this service date.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, and engage the parking brake.
  2. Enable Jack Mode / Service Mode on the touchscreen to disable air suspension self-leveling and falcon door auto-movement.
  3. Exit ALL doors with the key fob carried away from the vehicle (minimum 30 ft). Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  4. Open the frunk and disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery negative terminal (12V battery is located in the frunk on Model X, similar position to Model S). Insulate the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection.
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  6. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  7. Raise the vehicle on a lift using Tesla-approved jack pads at the factory lift points only. Do not lift on the HV pack or battery rails.
  8. Remove all four wheels for full access to caliper hose connections.
  9. Remove any underbody aero panels needed to access hard line routing along the rocker and rear subframe; retain all clips and fasteners.
  10. Place absorbent matting under the master cylinder area and beneath each corner to catch fluid.
  11. Open a fresh sealed container of DOT 3 brake fluid; do not reuse old fluid.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Document and photograph existing line routing
    Before disconnecting anything, photograph the complete routing of every hard line and flexible hose, including every retaining clip, P-clamp, and grommet. Model X line routing weaves around the HV pack, subframe, and air suspension lines — incorrect re-routing can cause chafing against suspension or HV components.
    Note clearance from any orange HV cable and from air suspension air lines. Brake lines must not contact either.

    Cap or seal the master cylinder reservoir
    Remove the reservoir cap, siphon out as much old fluid as possible with a clean syringe or fluid extractor, then either cap the reservoir or fit a pressure bleeder adapter. This minimizes fluid loss when lines are opened. Top up with fresh DOT 3 to the MAX line.

    Disconnect flexible hoses at each caliper
    At each of the four corners, place a catch container under the caliper. Using a flare nut wrench, loosen and remove the flexible hose from the caliper inlet. If the connection uses a banjo bolt with copper crush washers, discard the old washers and replace with new on reassembly. Cap the caliper port immediately to keep contamination out.
    Use a flare nut wrench, not a standard open-end wrench, to avoid rounding the soft fitting hex.

    Release flexible hoses from chassis brackets
    Each flexible hose is retained at the chassis end by a horseshoe clip and bracket, then connects to a hard line. Remove the horseshoe clip, separate the hose from the bracket, then unscrew the hard line fitting from the hose end using two flare nut wrenches (one to hold the hose hex, one to turn the hard line nut). Remove the hose.

    Trace and remove hard lines
    Working from the chassis brackets back toward the master cylinder / ABS modulator, release each hard line from its retaining clips. Loosen the fittings at the modulator end with a flare nut wrench, supporting the modulator port to avoid twisting the unit. Remove hard lines one at a time, labeling each by position (LF, RF, LR, RR) so the new lines go to the correct ports.
    ⚠️Do NOT pry or lever against any orange HV cable, HV pack penetration, or air suspension line while routing hard lines out.
    If a fitting will not break loose, do not force it — risk of cracking the modulator body. Apply penetrant and revisit.

    Inspect modulator/booster ports and brackets
    With lines removed, inspect the ABS modulator/iBooster ports for thread damage, corrosion, or fluid weeping. Inspect every chassis bracket and clip for damage or rust; replace any damaged retainers. Wipe ports clean with a lint-free towel — do not use compressed air directly into open ports.

    Install new hard lines
    Starting at the modulator end, hand-thread each new hard line fitting to avoid cross-threading the soft fitting threads. Route each line exactly as documented in Step 1, securing into every original clip and bracket as you go. Maintain clearance from HV cabling, air suspension lines, exhaust of nothing (none on EV), and all moving suspension components. Snug fittings, then torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
    Brake line fitting torque is not on the verified list for this vehicle. Do not guess — consult the Tesla Service Manual.

    Install new flexible hoses
    At each corner, thread the hard line nut into the new flexible hose end first (hand-tight), then seat the hose into the chassis bracket and install the horseshoe retaining clip. Connect the caliper end with new copper sealing washers (if banjo style). Verify the hose is not twisted and has full clearance through the entire steering and suspension travel — turn the steering lock-to-lock at the front and visually check.
    A twisted flex hose will fail prematurely. The hose should follow a natural arc with no torsion in the rubber.

    Final-torque all fittings
    Final-torque all hard line fittings, flex hose chassis-end fittings, and caliper-end fittings (or banjo bolts). Torque values for brake line fittings are not on the verified list for this Model X — torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Verify any caliper hardware that was disturbed is properly torqued (caliper bolts, slide pins, bracket bolts as applicable).

    Reconnect 12V and prepare for bleed
    Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal in the frunk. Close the frunk. The vehicle will wake — keep clear of the falcon doors. Top up the master cylinder reservoir with fresh DOT 3 to MAX. If the system requires a powered ABS/booster bleed, connect the appropriate diagnostic interface and follow the manufacturer-specified bleed procedure. A purely manual bleed will not evacuate air from the iBooster-type unit.
    Once 12V is reconnected, falcon doors and air suspension may move. Stay clear and keep Service Mode active until the vehicle is back on the ground.

    Bleed the brake system
    Bleed each caliper in the manufacturer-specified sequence (typically furthest from master cylinder first, but VERIFY SEQUENCE WITH SERVICE MANUAL for this Model X). Use a pressure bleeder at 10-15 psi for cleanest results. At each corner: attach clear hose to the bleeder screw, open the screw, allow fluid to flow until clear and bubble-free, then close the screw. Torque the bleeder screw — do not overtighten. Keep the reservoir topped up throughout; never let it run dry.
    Bleed sequence is critical and not verified in this guide — confirm with Tesla Service Manual before proceeding.

    Powered ABS/booster bleed cycle
    After the manual/pressure bleed, perform the diagnostic-commanded ABS and electronic booster bleed cycle if available. This cycles internal solenoids and the booster piston to purge air from passages a manual bleed cannot reach. Re-bleed each corner once more after the powered cycle. Top up the reservoir to MAX with fresh DOT 3.
    ℹ️If you do not have access to the diagnostic bleed function, the brake pedal may feel acceptable but ABS performance can be degraded. Have the system bled by a Tesla-certified technician before returning the car to service.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall any underbody aero panels removed for access; verify all original clips and fasteners are returned.
  2. Reinstall all four wheels. Torque lug nuts in a star pattern.
  3. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
  4. Exit Service / Jack Mode on the touchscreen so air suspension and falcon doors return to normal operation.
  5. With the vehicle running and on the ground, pump the brake pedal firmly multiple times to confirm a firm pedal. Re-check reservoir level and top up to MAX.
  6. Inspect every fitting and connection for weeping after the system is pressurized — both cold and after a short test drive.

Verification

  • Pedal feel: firm and high after 2-3 pumps with the vehicle running. Soft or sinking pedal indicates trapped air — re-bleed.
  • No active ABS, traction control, or brake warning messages on the touchscreen after a key cycle and short low-speed drive.
  • Visually inspect all connections (calipers, chassis brackets, modulator) for any sign of fluid weeping after a 10-minute road test including moderate-to-firm stops.
  • Confirm flex hoses do not contact any suspension, steering, HV, or air suspension component through full steering lock and full suspension travel (raise/lower air suspension via the touchscreen to check both extremes).
  • Verify regenerative braking and friction blending behave normally — abnormal blending or 'Service Brake System' alerts indicate the powered ABS/booster bleed was not completed.
  • Reset/log brake fluid service date. Tesla recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years regardless of mileage — set a reminder for the next service interval.
