Replacement of a rear parking brake actuator (electric motor-on-caliper EPB) on a 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. The actuator is integrated into the rear caliper assembly and requires the EPB to be placed in service/maintenance mode via the touchscreen before removal.
Warnings
⚠️The EPB actuator is electrically driven. If the parking brake is not placed in service/maintenance mode via the touchscreen before disconnecting, the motor can actuate unexpectedly and crush fingers.
⚠️Do NOT touch or route any tool near the orange HV cabling that runs along the underbody to the rear drive unit. If exposed, STOP.
⚠Tesla aluminum and composite underbody panels — do not strike with a hammer or pry against the battery pack housing.
⚠The Model Y rear caliper bracket bolts are often installed with high-strength threadlocker and may require heat to break loose. Do not over-torque on reinstall.

Preparation
- Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
- Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
- Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located under the rear seat / under access panel in front trunk area depending on build — refer to architecture notes).
- DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
- If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
- BEFORE disconnecting 12V: on the touchscreen, navigate to Service → Brakes → 'Brake Service Mode' (or equivalent EPB Maintenance Mode) and engage it. This retracts the EPB pistons to allow safe removal. Confirm both rear actuators have retracted.
- Loosen rear wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on the ground.
- Raise the vehicle using Tesla-approved jack pad locations only — never under the battery pack. Support on jack stands.

Procedure
- 1Confirm EPB is in service modeVerify on the touchscreen that the parking brake is in the released/service position. Reassembly

- Clean any brake cleaner residue from the rotor face before driving.
Verification
- On the touchscreen, confirm no parking brake or ABS warning indicators are present.
- Apply and release the parking brake several times via the touchscreen and gear selector — actuator should cycle audibly and smoothly on both sides.
- Perform a low-speed roll test on a slight incline: place in N, confirm the EPB holds the vehicle when applied.
- Drive test at low speed and verify no dragging or unusual noise from the rear corner.
