Replacement of the front door power window regulator assembly on a 2024 Model Y Long Range. Requires door card removal, vapor barrier separation, and lowering the window glass to access the regulator carrier mounted to the door inner skin.

Warnings

⚠️Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery before working inside the door. The window motor and door harness remain powered with the vehicle awake, and accidental switch contact can crush fingers.
Tesla Model Y has frameless door glass. Handle with care — once the regulator is loose the glass can fall freely into the door cavity. Tape the glass to the top of the door before disconnecting it from the regulator.
After 12V reconnection, the window auto-up/down (anti-pinch) calibration is lost. The window must be re-initialized or it will not auto-close and may behave erratically.
ℹ️Aluminum door structure — do not strike with a steel hammer. Use plastic pry tools only on trim and clips.
The door card contains the speaker, ambient lighting, and window/lock switch harnesses. Support the panel while disconnecting — do not let it hang on the wiring.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Lower the affected window approximately halfway BEFORE shutting the vehicle down — this exposes the regulator-to-glass attachment bolts through the access holes in the door inner skin. If the regulator is already failed and the glass cannot be moved, note this and plan to drop the glass manually after panel removal.
  3. Exit ALL doors with key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  4. Disconnect the 12V low-voltage battery (located behind/under the rear seat area on 2024 Model Y — refer to architecture notes). Isolate the negative terminal.
  5. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  6. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  7. Gather the replacement regulator and confirm it is the correct side (LH/RH) and matches the connector type of the original.
  8. Have painter's tape ready to secure the glass once the regulator is unbolted.

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove door card trim pieces
    Using a non-marring plastic pry tool, carefully release the small trim cover behind the interior door release/grab handle area to expose the hidden fastener(s). Work slowly — the trim is held by friction clips that break easily.

    Remove door card fasteners
    Remove the exposed Torx fasteners securing the door card to the door structure (typically located behind the trim cover and inside the grab handle pocket). Keep fasteners organized — they are not all the same length.

    Release door panel clips and remove panel
    Starting at a lower corner, use a panel clip tool to release the perimeter push-pin clips. Work around the bottom and sides. Once free, lift the panel UP and slightly outward to disengage the upper window-belt hook from the door sheet metal.
    Expect 1-3 clips to break — have replacements ready. Do not pull the panel away from the door more than ~6 inches until harnesses are disconnected.

    Disconnect door panel harnesses
    Disconnect the electrical connectors for the master switch pack (driver side) or single window/lock switch (passenger side), the speaker, the puddle/ambient light, and the door release. Press the connector lock tab fully before pulling — do not pry on the wires.

    Set panel aside and peel back vapor barrier
    Place the door card on a padded surface, switch-side up. Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier from the door inner skin, working slowly to preserve the butyl seal so it can be reused. Fold the barrier upward and tape it to the door frame to keep it clean.
    ℹ️Preserve the butyl bead — it is the door's water seal. Tearing it requires resealing with new butyl rope to prevent water leaks into the cabin.

    Secure the window glass
    If the glass is not already at the correct height, manually raise it to the fully closed position. Apply two strips of painter's tape across the glass and over the top of the door frame to hold the glass up while the regulator is removed. Confirm the glass cannot drop.
    ⚠️If the glass falls into the door cavity it can shatter or chip the painted edges. Frameless glass is heavy — use sufficient tape.

    Disconnect glass from regulator carrier
    Through the access holes in the door inner skin, locate the two fasteners clamping the glass to the regulator's lift carrier. Loosen (do not fully remove unless required) so the carrier separates from the glass. The glass should now be supported only by the painter's tape.

    Disconnect the regulator motor harness
    Locate the regulator motor electrical connector on the inside of the door. Press the locking tab and unplug. Free the harness from any clips on the regulator frame so it stays with the door, not the regulator.

    Remove regulator mounting fasteners
    Remove the bolts/nuts securing the regulator carrier frame to the door inner skin (typically multiple fasteners around the perimeter of the regulator). Support the regulator's weight with one hand as the last fastener is removed — it will drop free.

    Extract the regulator assembly
    Maneuver the regulator and motor assembly out through the large service opening in the door inner skin. Rotate as needed to clear the door structure. Compare the new regulator side-by-side with the old one to confirm correct part, motor orientation, and connector match.

    Install the new regulator
    Feed the new regulator assembly into the door cavity and align it with the mounting holes in the door inner skin. Start all mounting fasteners by hand before torquing any of them, to allow the carrier rails to self-align. Torque the regulator mounting fasteners to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.

    Reattach glass to regulator carrier
    Lower the glass (manually or with the regulator partially powered if safe) until the clamp points on the glass align with the carrier. Snug the glass clamp fasteners while ensuring the glass is centered front-to-back in its weatherstrip channel. Torque to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual. Remove the painter's tape only after the glass is secured.
    Improper glass alignment causes wind noise, water leaks, and binding during auto-up/down. Cycle the glass carefully by hand (if possible) before powering it.

    Reconnect motor harness and verify routing
    Plug the regulator motor connector back in until the lock tab clicks. Re-secure any harness clips. Confirm no wires are pinched against the regulator rails or the moving carrier path.

Reassembly

  1. Reseat the vapor barrier against the door inner skin, pressing firmly along the butyl bead. If the butyl was damaged, apply new butyl rope sealant to restore a continuous water seal.
  2. Reconnect all door panel harnesses (switch pack, speaker, courtesy light, door release).
  3. Hook the upper window-belt edge of the door card over the top of the door first, then press the perimeter clips into their holes working around the panel.
  4. Reinstall the Torx fasteners behind the trim cover and in the grab handle pocket.
  5. Reinstall the small trim cover, ensuring all friction clips fully seat.
  6. Reconnect the 12V battery negative terminal. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification.
  7. Re-initialize the window auto-up/down: with the door closed, press and HOLD the window switch in the DOWN position until the glass is fully down, hold an additional 2-3 seconds, then release. Press and HOLD the switch UP until the glass is fully closed, hold an additional 2-3 seconds, then release. Repeat if auto-mode does not function.

Verification

  • Cycle the window fully up and down at least 5 times. Movement must be smooth, quiet, and free of binding or grinding.
  • Test the auto-up and auto-down (one-touch) functions. Both should work after the re-initialization procedure.
  • Verify anti-pinch: with the window closing in auto mode, lightly obstruct the glass with a soft object — it should reverse direction.
  • Close the door and check for wind noise at highway speed (test drive). Whistling indicates the glass is misaligned in its weatherstrip.
  • Spray water along the top edge of the glass and inspect the inside of the door card for leaks — confirms the vapor barrier seal is intact.
  • Check the Tesla touchscreen for any door-related alerts. Confirm the window position is reported correctly when opening/closing the door (frameless glass auto-drop should still function).
  • No related service interval applies to this job, but while the door is open it is a good time to confirm cabin air filter age (Tesla recommends replacement every 2 years).
