Replace the windshield washer fluid pump on a 2024 Tesla Roadster Tri Motor. The Roadster's washer reservoir and pump are accessed from the front cargo/service area; the pump is a press-fit unit sealed to the reservoir with a rubber grommet.

Warnings

⚠️Do NOT touch, cut, or pierce any orange high-voltage cabling encountered during access. If orange cabling is visible near your work area, STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
The 2024 Roadster has limited public service documentation. If component layout differs from this procedure, stop and verify against the Tesla Service Manual rather than guessing.
Roadster body panels are lightweight composite/aluminum — do not pry against painted surfaces or strike with metal tools.
ℹ️Washer fluid is mildly corrosive to paint and irritating to skin/eyes. Catch all spillage in a drain pan.

Parts

  • Washer fluid pump (manufacturer-specified for 2024 Roadster) × 1 — Refer to Tesla Service Manual / parts catalog for the correct Roadster pump
  • Pump grommet / seal × 1 — OEM replacement grommet — replace if torn or hardened

Fluids

  • Windshield Washer Fluid — 3.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, place in P, engage parking brake.
  2. Exit ALL doors with the key fob away from the vehicle. Wait at least 2 minutes for HV systems to fully de-energize, even on this non-HV job.
  3. Disconnect the 12V (or 16V/48V on applicable models) low-voltage battery. See architecture notes for location on this Roadster (Lotus-derived chassis — battery location may differ from other Teslas; consult the service manual).
  4. DO NOT touch, cut, or pierce ANY orange cable — these are high-voltage and lethal.
  5. If at any point you encounter an orange cable, an HV component, or are unsure if a system is de-energized: STOP and consult a Tesla-certified technician.
  6. Open the front service compartment / frunk to access the washer reservoir area.
  7. Have a drain pan and shop towels ready — the reservoir holds up to 3.5 qt of fluid that may spill when the pump is removed.
  8. Verify you have the correct replacement pump and grommet before disassembly.

Procedure

  1. 1
Locate the washer reservoir and pump
Identify the washer fluid reservoir in the front compartment. The pump is mounted low on the side of the reservoir, secured by a rubber grommet, with a single electrical connector and one or two fluid hoses attached.
  2. 2
    Remove access trim if required
If a trim panel, splash shield, or fender liner blocks access to the pump, remove the retaining fasteners using plastic trim tools. Set fasteners aside in order. Do not force panels — the Roadster uses lightweight body panels that crack if over-stressed.
Roadster trim is composite — pry only at designed clip locations.
  3. 3
Drain or siphon washer fluid (optional but recommended)
If the reservoir is more than ~1/3 full, siphon fluid out through the fill neck using a clean fluid transfer pump. This avoids a large spill when the pump is pulled. Alternatively, position the drain pan directly below the pump location to catch fluid as it drops out.
  4. 4
    Disconnect the pump electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the pump's wiring harness connector and pull it straight off. Inspect terminals for corrosion or fluid intrusion. Do not pull on the wires.
  5. 5
    Disconnect the washer hose(s)
Carefully detach the washer fluid hose(s) from the pump outlet. Some Roadster pumps have a single outlet (windshield only); others may have a second line for headlamp washers if equipped. Cap or plug hoses to limit drips.
  6. 6
Remove the pump from the reservoir
Position the drain pan directly under the pump. Grasp the pump body and pull it straight outward with a gentle twisting motion to release it from the rubber grommet. Expect a brief flow of remaining fluid — keep it directed into the pan.
Do not pry against the reservoir wall — plastic reservoirs crack easily and a replacement requires significantly more labor.
  7. 7
    Inspect and replace the grommet
Inspect the rubber grommet in the reservoir wall. If it is torn, deformed, or hardened, replace it with the OEM specification grommet. A failed grommet will leak even with a new pump installed.
  8. 8
    Install the new pump
Lubricate the new grommet with a small amount of fresh washer fluid (do NOT use petroleum-based lubricant — it will degrade the rubber). Press the new pump straight into the grommet until fully seated. Confirm it is square and not cocked.
  9. 9
    Reconnect hoses and electrical connector
Reconnect the washer hose(s) to the pump outlet(s), ensuring they are fully seated. Reconnect the electrical connector until the locking tab clicks. Verify routing matches original — hoses should not be kinked or contacting hot/sharp surfaces.
  10. 10
    Refill the washer reservoir
Refill with windshield washer fluid up to the fill line (capacity up to 3.5 qt). Use a winter-rated fluid if operating in freezing temperatures.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall any trim panels or splash shields removed for access, reusing original fasteners. Torque any threaded fasteners to OEM specification — refer to Tesla Service Manual.
  2. Reconnect the 12V low-voltage battery. Torque battery terminal hardware to specification.
  3. Close the front service compartment and verify it latches fully.

Verification

  • With the vehicle powered on, activate the windshield washers from the stalk/touchscreen and confirm strong, even spray from all nozzles.
  • Inspect the pump-to-reservoir grommet area for leaks during and after operation. Run the pump for several cycles and re-check.
  • Check beneath the vehicle and inside the front compartment for any residual washer fluid drips after a 5-10 minute soak test.
  • Confirm no fault messages related to washer system appear on the touchscreen.
  • Note: Washer fluid is not on a Tesla service interval, but top off seasonally and use freeze-rated fluid in cold climates to prevent pump damage.
