This procedure covers the removal and replacement of all four fuel injectors on the 2012-2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine, including fuel system depressurization and fuel rail removal.
Warnings
⚠️Fuel system is under pressure. Relieve fuel pressure completely before disconnecting any fuel lines. Failure to do so can cause fuel spray resulting in fire or injury.
⚠️Gasoline is highly flammable. No smoking, sparks, or open flames in work area. Keep fire extinguisher accessible.
⚠Work in well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors are toxic and heavier than air.
⚠Avoid contact with fuel. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection throughout this procedure.
ℹ️Engine must be completely cold before beginning work to prevent burns and fuel vapor ignition.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 5 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Place drain pan and shop towels under work area to catch fuel spillage
- Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump relay (EFI NO.1 fuse in engine compartment fuse box) and attempting to start engine until it dies
- Ensure adequate ventilation in work area
Procedure
- 1Remove engine coverGrasp the engine cover firmly and pull upward to disengage the mounting grommets. Remove the cover completely from the engine bay. Set aside in clean area.
- 2Disconnect air intake systemLoosen the hose clamp at the throttle body using a flathead screwdriver. Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out. Remove the air intake tube from the throttle body and air box. Move aside to provide access to fuel rail.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect fuel supply lineLocate the fuel supply line at the fuel rail inlet on the driver's side. Use appropriate fuel line disconnect tool to depress the retaining tabs while pulling the line away from the rail. Have shop towels ready to catch residual fuel. Cap or plug the line to prevent contamination.⚠Residual fuel will spill even after pressure relief. Keep towels and drain pan positioned to catch fuel.
- 4Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectorsDisconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors. Press down on the connector tab while pulling upward to release each connector. Note the routing of the injector wiring harness for reinstallation. If equipped, disconnect the wire harness retaining clips from the fuel rail.
- 5Remove vacuum hoses and bracketsDisconnect any vacuum hoses attached to or crossing over the fuel rail. On this engine, there is typically a vacuum hose connected to the fuel pressure regulator on the passenger side of the rail. Note hose routing for reinstallation. Remove any wire harness brackets or clips attached to the fuel rail mounting bolts.
- 6Remove fuel rail mounting boltsUsing a 12mm socket, remove the two fuel rail mounting bolts. These are located at either end of the fuel rail. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation. Support the fuel rail to prevent it from dropping.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 7Remove fuel rail and injectorsCarefully pull the fuel rail upward with even pressure to extract all four injectors from the intake manifold simultaneously. The injectors may stick due to O-ring friction - use gentle rocking motion if needed. Once free, lift the entire fuel rail and injector assembly away from the engine. Place on clean work surface with injectors facing upward.⚠Do not pry against intake manifold. Apply only upward pulling force to avoid damaging injector ports in manifold.
- 8Remove injectors from fuel railFor each injector, pull back the metal retaining clip and slide it off the injector. Grasp the injector body and pull straight out from the fuel rail with a twisting motion. Remove and discard all old O-rings and grommets from each injector. Clean the fuel rail injector ports with shop towel.
- 9Inspect intake manifold injector portsInspect each of the four injector ports in the intake manifold for debris, carbon buildup, or damage. Clean ports carefully with shop towel. Do not allow any debris to fall into the intake ports. Inspect for any old O-ring material stuck in the ports and remove if present.
- 10Prepare new fuel injectorsApply a light coating of clean gasoline to all new O-rings. Install new lower O-rings (larger diameter) onto each new injector and seat them properly in the O-ring groove. Install new grommets onto the top of each injector. Install new upper O-rings (smaller diameter) onto each injector, ensuring they seat in the correct groove near the fuel rail connection point.ℹ️Never reuse old O-rings or grommets. Always use new components to prevent fuel leaks.
- 11Install injectors to fuel railInsert each new injector into its corresponding port on the fuel rail with a twisting motion until fully seated. Install the metal retaining clip onto each injector, ensuring it locks into place and secures the injector to the rail. Verify all four injectors are firmly attached and properly oriented with electrical connectors facing outward.
- 12Install fuel rail assemblyPosition the fuel rail and injector assembly above the intake manifold, aligning all four injectors with their respective ports. Apply even downward pressure on the fuel rail to seat all injectors simultaneously into the manifold. Ensure the fuel rail mounting holes align with the threaded holes in the intake manifold. Install but do not fully tighten the two fuel rail mounting bolts.
- 13Torque fuel rail boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts to specification in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating of all injectors. Verify all injectors are fully seated and the fuel rail sits flush against the intake manifold.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect fuel and electrical connectionsInstall new O-rings on the fuel supply line if not already done. Connect the fuel supply line to the fuel rail inlet, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Tug gently to verify connection. Reconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors until they click. Reinstall any wire harness brackets or clips. Reconnect vacuum hoses to their original positions.ℹ️Fuel line connection must click audibly. If connection feels loose, inspect O-rings and connector for damage.
- 15Reinstall air intake systemReconnect the air intake tube to the throttle body. Tighten the hose clamp to specification. Reconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector. Verify all connections are secure and no tools or parts are left in the engine bay.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 16Reconnect battery and prime fuel systemReconnect the negative battery cable. Reinstall the fuel pump relay or fuse. Turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this 3-4 times to prime the fuel system and pressurize the fuel rail. Inspect all fuel connections for leaks while system is pressurized.⚠️Do not start engine if any fuel leaks are detected. Immediately turn off ignition and repair leak before proceeding.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning grommets and pressing firmly until seated
- Double-check all electrical connectors are fully engaged
- Verify no tools or shop towels were left in engine bay
- Clean up any spilled fuel from engine surfaces
Verification
- With engine running, inspect all fuel connections for leaks using a flashlight
- Listen for any unusual noises or rough idle that might indicate injector installation issues
- Check for fuel odor in engine bay or cabin
- Verify all injectors are firing by checking engine runs smoothly without misfires
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify no fuel system fault codes are present
- Test drive vehicle to confirm normal acceleration and no hesitation under load
