Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition OFF and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated
Procedure
- 1Locate the engine compartment fuse/relay boxThe primary fuse/relay box is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment, near the front corner adjacent to the battery. It is a black rectangular box with a removable cover.
- 2Remove the fuse box coverRelease the clips on both sides of the fuse box cover by pressing or prying gently. Lift the cover straight up and off. The relay diagram should be printed on the underside of the cover for reference.
- 3Identify the horn relay locationLocate the horn relay using the diagram on the fuse box cover. In 2012-2017 Camry models, the horn relay is typically labeled 'HORN' and is positioned in the upper section of the relay box. It is a small rectangular relay, usually black or blue in color.
- 4Remove the old horn relayGrasp the horn relay firmly and pull straight up with steady pressure to remove it from its socket. If the relay is difficult to remove, use a relay puller tool or gently pry with a flathead screwdriver under the relay body (not the terminals). Avoid rocking side to side as this may damage the socket terminals.
- 5Inspect the relay socketExamine the relay socket for corrosion, burned contacts, or debris. If corrosion is present, clean terminals with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry. Check that all socket terminals are straight and not bent or pushed back into the housing.
- 6Install the new horn relayAlign the new relay with the socket, ensuring the orientation matches the original (relay terminals should align with socket openings). Press the relay firmly into the socket until it seats completely and is flush with surrounding relays. The relay should click into place and sit level.
- 7Reinstall the fuse box coverPosition the fuse box cover over the relay box and press down firmly until all clips engage and the cover is secure. Ensure the cover is fully seated to maintain weatherproof seal.
Reassembly
- Ensure fuse box cover is properly secured with all clips engaged
- Verify no tools or parts are left in engine compartment
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine does not need to be running)
- Press the horn button on steering wheel - horn should sound immediately and clearly
- Test horn with short and sustained button presses to verify consistent operation
- If horn still does not work, verify fuse is intact and check horn itself for proper ground connection
