Parts
- Rear window regulator and motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel clips (assorted) × 1 — Replace any broken clips
- Vapor barrier (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open the rear door on the side requiring repair
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding
- Roll the window fully up if operational; if not, manually position glass to the top of door frame
Procedure
- 1Remove door panelRemove the Phillips screw from inside the door pull handle cup. Use a trim removal tool to carefully pry out the switch panel bezel from the armrest. Disconnect the window and lock switch connectors by pressing the release tab. Remove all Phillips screws securing the door panel (typically 2-3 screws around perimeter). Carefully lift the door panel upward to disengage the top clips from the door frame, then pull away from door. Disconnect the door handle cable by sliding the cable end out of the handle lever.
- 2Remove speaker assemblyLocate the rear door speaker mounted in the upper portion of the door. Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the speaker (typically 3-4 fasteners). Disconnect the speaker electrical connector and remove the speaker from the door to access the window regulator area.
- 3Peel back vapor barrierCarefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier sheet to expose the window regulator mechanism. Work slowly to avoid tearing the barrier. If using adhesive-backed barrier, peel only as much as necessary to access the regulator mounting bolts and motor connector. The barrier must be resealed during reassembly.
- 4Secure window glassPosition the window glass approximately 4-6 inches from the top of the door frame. Use masking tape to secure the glass to the door frame, taping across the top of the glass and onto the exterior door frame. This prevents the glass from falling when disconnected from the regulator. Verify the glass is stable before proceeding.
- 5Disconnect window motor connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector release tab and disconnect the wiring harness from the motor. Note the wire routing for reinstallation.
- 6Disconnect glass from regulatorThrough the access holes in the door frame, locate the two bolts securing the window glass to the regulator lift plate. These are typically 10mm bolts. Loosen and remove both bolts while supporting the glass with your other hand. Once disconnected, ensure the glass remains securely taped to the door frame.
- 7Remove regulator mounting boltsLocate all regulator mounting bolts inside the door cavity. The 2012-2017 Camry typically has 4-6 bolts securing the regulator assembly to the door frame. Remove all mounting bolts using a 10mm socket. Note the location of each bolt as some may be different lengths.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Remove regulator assemblyCarefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the large service opening in the door frame. The regulator rails and motor must be angled and rotated to clear the door structure. Work slowly to avoid damaging the vapor barrier or interior door components. If equipped with equalizer arms, collapse them to facilitate removal.
- 9Install new regulator assemblyPosition the new window regulator and motor assembly and carefully feed it into the door cavity through the service opening. Angle and rotate as needed to clear obstructions. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame mounting points. Ensure no wires are pinched and the regulator tracks are properly oriented.
- 10Install regulator mounting boltsInstall all regulator mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque each bolt to specification in a cross-pattern sequence to ensure even mounting pressure. Verify the regulator sits flush against the door frame.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Connect glass to regulatorRemove the masking tape securing the window glass. Lower the glass down until the mounting holes in the glass bracket align with the regulator lift plate. Insert and tighten the two mounting bolts through the access holes. Ensure the glass is seated properly in both regulator attachment points before fully tightening.
- 12Connect motor and test operationReconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (engine off) and test window operation through the switch. Verify smooth operation through full up and down travel with no binding or unusual noises. If equipped with auto-up/down, test this function. Disconnect battery again before continuing reassembly.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 13Reinstall vapor barrier and speakerCarefully press the vapor barrier back into place, ensuring complete adhesion around all edges to maintain moisture seal. Reconnect the speaker electrical connector and reinstall the speaker into the door, securing with all mounting fasteners.
- 14Reinstall door panelReconnect the door handle cable to the handle lever. Position the door panel and engage the top edge clips into the door frame slots. Press firmly around the perimeter to seat all retaining clips. Install all Phillips screws around the panel perimeter. Reconnect the window and lock switch connectors and snap the switch panel bezel into place. Install the screw in the door pull handle cup.
Reassembly
- Reconnect the negative battery cable and torque to specification
- Initialize power window auto up/down function if equipped: with ignition ON, roll window fully down, hold switch down for 2 seconds after full travel, then roll window fully up and hold switch up for 2 seconds after full travel
- Test window operation multiple times to verify proper function and smooth travel
- Inspect door panel fit and verify all clips are properly engaged
Verification
- Operate the rear window through multiple full up and down cycles to confirm smooth operation without binding or noise
- Verify window seals properly against weatherstripping when fully closed
- Test auto-up and auto-down functions if equipped
- Check that window stops at proper full-up and full-down positions without overtravel
- Listen for any unusual motor noises or grinding sounds during operation
- Verify door panel is secure with no rattles or loose clips
