Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before draining coolant or working near exhaust components. Coolant operating temperature exceeds 200°F and can cause severe burns.
Only use Toyota WS ATF in the transmission. Other ATF types will cause transmission damage and void warranty.
Never open coolant system when engine is hot. Pressurized system can spray scalding coolant.
Do not mix DOT 3 brake fluid with silicone or DOT 5 fluid. Contamination will damage ABS system.
ℹ️This procedure drains and refills transmission fluid but does not perform a complete flush. Approximately 4 quarts will be replaced out of 10 quart total capacity.

  2. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  3. Lift vehicle and support on all four jack stands at manufacturer frame points
  4. Remove all four wheels and set aside
  5. Remove engine cover by pulling up firmly on the front edge, then lifting off
  6. Locate and photograph all drain plugs and filter locations before beginning
  7. Have all replacement parts and fluids ready and verified correct

Procedure

  1. 1
Drain engine oil and transmission fluid
Place drain pan under engine oil drain plug on passenger side of oil pan. Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). Move drain pan under transmission drain plug located on front of transmission pan. Remove transmission drain plug and allow ATF to drain completely. Inspect both drain plugs and replace if threads are damaged.
Transmission drain plug is aluminum and can strip easily. Use 6-point socket and apply even pressure.
  2. 2
Replace oil filter and reinstall drain plugs
Remove engine oil filter located on front lower side of engine block using oil filter wrench. Clean mounting surface on engine. Lubricate new oil filter gasket with fresh engine oil and hand-tighten new filter until gasket contacts, then rotate an additional 3/4 turn. Install NEW crush washer on oil drain plug and reinstall plug. Reinstall transmission drain plug with original washer (reusable aluminum seal).
  3. 3
    Refill transmission and engine oil
Locate transmission fill plug on passenger side of transmission case (requires removing plastic shield if present). Use fluid transfer pump to add exactly 4.0 quarts of Toyota WS ATF through fill hole. Reinstall fill plug hand-tight. Remove engine oil fill cap on top of engine and pour in 4.5 quarts of Toyota 0W-20 oil using funnel. Wait 2 minutes, then check dipstick and add remaining oil to reach FULL mark.
  4. 4
    Replace engine air filter
Open air filter box by releasing clips on both sides of housing. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Clean any debris from inside housing using clean cloth. Install new air filter ensuring proper seating in housing channels. Close cover and secure clips firmly.
  5. 5
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Squeeze sides of glove box inward to release stops and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter cover by pressing release tabs. Slide old filter out noting airflow direction arrow. Insert new filter with airflow arrow pointing down/forward. Reinstall cover and glove box.
  6. 6
    Remove ignition coils
Disconnect the four ignition coil electrical connectors by pressing release tab and pulling straight up. Remove the single bolt securing each coil using 10mm socket. Grasp each coil firmly and pull straight up with slight twisting motion to remove. Inspect coil boots for cracks or carbon tracking.
Do not pull on wires when removing coils. Pull only on the coil body to avoid wire damage.
  7. 7
Remove and inspect old spark plugs
Use 16mm spark plug socket with extension to remove all four spark plugs. Turn counterclockwise and remove slowly to avoid dropping debris into cylinders. Inspect old plugs for abnormal wear, oil fouling, or electrode damage which may indicate engine problems. Normal plugs should have light tan/gray deposits.
  8. 8
    Install new spark plugs
Verify new spark plug gap is 0.043 inches (1.1mm) using gap tool. Apply small amount of anti-seize compound to threads only (avoid electrode end). Carefully thread each plug by hand to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use torque wrench and spark plug socket to tighten to 18 ft-lb (24 Nm). If torque wrench cannot reach this low range, tighten 1/4 turn past hand-tight.
Cross-threading spark plugs in aluminum head will require expensive head repair. Always start threads by hand.
  9. 9
    Reinstall ignition coils
Apply thin coat of dielectric grease inside each coil boot. Align each coil with spark plug and press down firmly until fully seated with audible click. Install retaining bolt and torque to specification. Reconnect electrical connectors ensuring full engagement with click.
  10. 10
    Drain and refill engine coolant
Remove radiator cap only when engine is completely cold. Locate radiator drain petcock on driver side lower radiator tank. Place drain pan underneath and open petcock to drain coolant. Once drained, close petcock hand-tight. Remove coolant reservoir cap and use fluid pump or funnel to add Toyota Pink Super Long Life Coolant. Fill radiator to base of filler neck and reservoir to FULL COLD line. Leave cap off for initial startup.
⚠️Opening cooling system on hot engine will cause explosive release of scalding coolant under pressure.
  11. 11
Bleed brake fluid at all four corners
Check master cylinder reservoir and fill to MAX line with fresh DOT 3 brake fluid. Starting with right rear wheel, attach clear tubing to bleeder screw and place other end in container. Have assistant press brake pedal slowly 3 times and hold. Open bleeder screw 1/2 turn until fluid flows, then close before pedal reaches floor. Repeat until fluid runs clear with no bubbles. Repeat procedure for left rear, right front, then left front. Top off master cylinder reservoir frequently during bleeding.
Never allow master cylinder reservoir to run empty during bleeding or air will enter ABS system requiring professional bleeding.
  12. 12
Test run engine and check for leaks
With radiator cap still removed, start engine and allow to idle. Watch for coolant level to drop as thermostat opens and air purges. Add coolant as needed to maintain level. Run engine until cooling fans cycle on. Rev engine to 2500 RPM several times to purge remaining air. Once fans cycle, shut off engine and allow to cool 10 minutes. Check final coolant level and install radiator cap. Inspect under vehicle for any oil, transmission fluid, coolant, or brake fluid leaks.
  13. 13
    Reinstall wheels and lower vehicle
Clean wheel mounting surfaces on hubs. Mount wheels and install lug nuts hand-tight in star pattern. Lower vehicle until wheels just contact ground but suspension is not loaded. Torque lug nuts to specification in star pattern (top, bottom-right, top-left, bottom-left, top-right for 5-lug). Fully lower vehicle and re-torque all lug nuts in same star pattern to verify proper torque.
  14. 14
Reset maintenance reminder and verify fluid levels
Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine. Press and hold trip meter reset button while turning ignition off then on again. Continue holding until maintenance light blinks and resets. Start engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes immediately. Check all fluid levels with engine at operating temperature: engine oil at FULL on dipstick, coolant at reservoir FULL HOT line, brake fluid at MAX line. Verify no warning lights on dash.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover by aligning rear clips first, then pressing down firmly on front until all clips engage
  2. Verify all drain plugs are tight and no tools or parts are left in engine bay
  3. Clean any spilled fluids from undercarriage and engine bay

Verification

  • Start engine and verify smooth idle with no unusual noises, misfires, or warning lights
  • Check under vehicle after 5 minutes of running for any fluid leaks at drain plugs or filter
  • Test drive vehicle for 10-15 minutes including highway speeds to verify proper engine performance
  • After test drive, recheck all fluid levels hot and inspect again for leaks
  • Verify transmission shifts smoothly through all gears with no slipping or harsh engagement
  • Check that brake pedal feels firm with no excessive travel and brakes operate normally
  • Verify coolant level remains stable at FULL HOT line after cooling fans have cycled multiple times
  • Confirm maintenance reminder light has been reset and does not reappear
