This procedure removes and replaces the driver airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Improper airbag handling can cause accidental deployment resulting in severe injury or death. Follow all procedures exactly.
⚠️Always wait a minimum of 2 minutes after battery disconnect before working on airbag system to allow capacitor discharge.
⚠️Never use electrical test equipment on airbag circuits unless specifically designed for SRS systems.
Place removed airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from work area. Never place face-down.
Do not strike, drop, or allow impact to airbag module. Replace if dropped.
Incorrect torque on airbag mounting bolts can cause deployment failure or unintended deployment.
ℹ️If SRS warning light is illuminated before starting work, diagnose and resolve fault codes before replacing airbag.
ℹ️If unsure about any step in this procedure, seek professional service. Airbag system errors can be fatal.

Parts

  • Driver airbag module × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key/fob from vehicle
  3. Ensure front wheels are pointing straight ahead
  4. Open driver door and leave open throughout procedure for access
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket and isolate cable away from battery post
  6. Wait minimum 2 minutes for airbag system capacitor discharge before proceeding

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access airbag module mounting bolts
Turn the steering wheel to access the first mounting bolt hole. On the back of the steering wheel, locate the Torx bolt access holes on either side of the steering wheel hub (left and right at approximately 3 and 9 o'clock positions). These may have small covers that need to be pried out with a small flathead screwdriver.
  2. 2
    Mark steering wheel alignment
Before removing anything, use tape or a marker to mark the alignment between the steering wheel and the steering column shaft. This ensures proper reinstallation and maintains clock spring alignment.
  3. 3
    Remove airbag module mounting bolts
Using a Torx T30 bit with extension, remove both airbag module mounting bolts from the rear of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel as needed to access each bolt. Keep these bolts as they will be reused unless damaged.
Support airbag module as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling.

  4. 4
Remove airbag module from steering wheel
Carefully pull the airbag module straight away from the steering wheel. It may require gentle wiggling but should not need force. Pull it out far enough to access the electrical connectors on the back.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
Locate the two electrical connectors on the back of the airbag module: the yellow airbag connector and the horn connector. Press the locking tabs and carefully disconnect both connectors. Note the routing and orientation for reassembly.
⚠️Do not pull on wires. Press locking tabs and pull only on connector bodies.
  6. 6
    Store old airbag module safely
Place the removed airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface in a secure location away from the work area. Do not place anything on top of it.
  7. 7
    Inspect clock spring and connectors
With the airbag removed, visually inspect the clock spring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel for any damage, melting, or unusual wear. Inspect both connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Verify steering wheel alignment marks are still visible and wheels are still straight.
If clock spring is damaged or steering wheel has been turned with airbag removed, clock spring must be centered before proceeding. Consult professional service if uncertain.
  8. 8
    Connect new airbag module
Remove new airbag module from packaging. Connect the yellow airbag connector first, ensuring it clicks securely into place, followed by the horn connector. Verify both connectors are fully seated and locked.
  9. 9
    Position new airbag module
Carefully align the new airbag module with the steering wheel mounting points. Ensure wiring is properly routed and not pinched. The module should sit flush against the steering wheel with mounting holes aligned.
  10. 10
    Install airbag module mounting bolts
Insert both Torx mounting bolts and hand-thread them to prevent cross-threading. Using a torque wrench with Torx T30 bit, tighten both bolts to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft) in an alternating pattern. This torque specification is critical for proper airbag function.
⚠️Torque specification is critical. Over-torquing can damage deployment mechanism; under-torquing can cause module to separate during deployment.

    Reconnect battery
Return to the battery and reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten the terminal bolt to 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench and 10mm socket. Ensure terminal is clean and makes solid contact.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
  2. Verify airbag module sits flush with no gaps around perimeter
  3. Confirm steering wheel alignment marks still match and wheels point straight
  4. Replace any access hole covers that were removed from steering wheel
  5. Do not start vehicle or turn ignition on until ready to perform SRS system verification

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
  • Observe instrument cluster SRS/airbag warning light - it should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off
  • If SRS light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a fault that must be diagnosed with a scan tool before operating vehicle
  • Start engine and verify SRS light remains off
  • Test horn function by pressing center of steering wheel
  • Turn steering wheel lock-to-lock while stationary to verify no unusual noises or binding from clock spring
  • If any warning lights remain illuminated or system does not function properly, do not drive vehicle - seek professional diagnosis immediately
  • Clear any stored diagnostic codes if necessary and verify no active faults present
