This procedure replaces the blower motor control module (power transistor/resistor) located in the HVAC system, which controls blower motor speeds for the climate control system.

Warnings

Do not start this procedure immediately after running the HVAC system at high speed, as the control module may be hot to the touch
ℹ️This component is located behind the glove box on the passenger side. Removing the glove box is required for access

Parts

  • Blower motor control module (power transistor) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Electrical connector grease (dielectric) × 1 — Optional for corrosion prevention

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Allow HVAC system to cool if recently operated at high fan speeds
  4. Open passenger door for working access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove glove box
Open the glove box fully. Locate the damper arm on the right side and disconnect it by squeezing the release tab. Push inward on both sides of the glove box to release the stops from their slots, then lower the glove box down completely to access the area behind it.
  2. 2
    Locate blower motor control module
With the glove box removed, look at the HVAC housing on the passenger side. The blower motor control module (power transistor) is mounted on the side of the HVAC unit, typically on a heat sink with cooling fins. It will have a wiring harness connector attached.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight away from the control module. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage.
  4. 4
    Remove mounting screws
Remove the two screws securing the blower motor control module to the HVAC housing. The module is typically secured with Phillips-head screws. Keep track of these fasteners for reinstallation.

  5. 5
    Remove control module
Carefully pull the control module away from the HVAC housing. The module may have thermal compound or a gasket between it and the housing to aid heat transfer. Note the orientation of the module for proper reinstallation.
  6. 6
    Clean mounting surface
Clean the mounting surface on the HVAC housing where the module contacts. Remove any old thermal compound or debris using a clean cloth. The surface should be clean and flat for proper heat dissipation.
  7. 7
    Install new control module
Position the new blower motor control module in the same orientation as the original. Ensure any thermal pad or gasket is properly positioned between the module and housing. Align the mounting holes carefully.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting screws
Install the two mounting screws and tighten them in a cross pattern to the specified torque. Do not overtighten as this can crack the module housing or strip the threads in the HVAC housing.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Plug the electrical connector firmly into the new control module until it clicks into place. Verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector if desired for corrosion prevention.
  10. 10
    Reinstall glove box
Lift the glove box back into position and push inward on both sides to engage the stops in their slots. Reconnect the damper arm to the glove box. Close and open the glove box to verify proper operation.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure the electrical connector is fully seated and locked before testing
  2. Verify the glove box opens and closes smoothly with proper damper operation

Verification

  • Start the vehicle and turn on the climate control system
  • Test all blower motor speed settings (1 through 7 or Low through High depending on system)
  • Verify smooth operation at all speeds without unusual noise or intermittent operation
  • Confirm airflow increases proportionally with each speed setting
  • Listen for any buzzing, clicking, or irregular operation that would indicate improper installation
  • Check that the HVAC system responds properly to temperature and mode changes
