Parts
- Rear bumper reinforcement beam × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim clips (assorted) × 10 — 90467-07201 and similar
- Impact absorbers (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks in front of front wheels
- If equipped with parking sensors or rear camera, disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
- Raise rear of vehicle using approved lift points and support with jack stands
- Remove both rear wheels for easier access to bumper mounting points
- Optionally mark bumper cover alignment with masking tape before removal
Procedure
- 1Remove rear bumper coverOpen trunk and remove trunk liner clips to access upper bumper mounting bolts. Remove two upper bumper cover bolts from each side inside the trunk opening. Remove screws from rear wheel well liner edges on both sides. Remove lower bumper cover screws from underneath the vehicle. Carefully pull the bumper cover away from the vehicle, releasing push clips along the upper edge. Disconnect any electrical connectors for parking sensors, camera, or lighting. Set bumper cover aside safely.Torque specBumper Cover Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Disconnect parking sensors and wiringIf equipped, disconnect all parking sensor connectors from the bumper reinforcement area. Carefully unclip wiring harnesses from any retaining clips on the reinforcement beam. Move wiring aside to prevent damage during reinforcement removal.
- 3Remove tail light assemblies (if necessary)For improved access on some models, remove the rear tail light assemblies. From inside the trunk, remove the access panel. Disconnect the tail light electrical connector. Remove the tail light mounting nuts and carefully pull the assembly rearward out of the vehicle.
- 4Remove impact absorbersLocate the foam or honeycomb impact absorbers attached to the front of the reinforcement beam. These are typically held by clips or may be adhesive-backed. Carefully remove them and inspect for damage. Replace if crushed or deformed.
- 5Remove reinforcement mounting boltsLocate the reinforcement beam mounting bolts on each side of the vehicle, typically four bolts per side (two upper, two lower) connecting the beam to the rear body frame rails. Support the reinforcement beam with one hand or have an assistant hold it. Using a 14mm socket, remove all mounting bolts securing the reinforcement beam to the vehicle chassis.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 6Remove reinforcement beamWith all mounting bolts removed, carefully lower and remove the rear bumper reinforcement beam from the vehicle. The beam is heavy, use proper lifting technique or get assistance. Inspect mounting points on the vehicle for damage or corrosion.
- 7Prepare new reinforcement beamInspect the new reinforcement beam for shipping damage. Transfer any brackets, mounting hardware, or tow hook components from the old beam to the new one if not pre-installed. Clean mounting surfaces on the vehicle frame rails with a wire brush if needed.
- 8Install new reinforcement beamWith assistance or proper support, position the new reinforcement beam into place, aligning the mounting holes with the frame rail mounting points. Start all mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper alignment before tightening any bolts. Verify beam is level and properly seated.
- 9Torque reinforcement mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench, tighten all reinforcement beam mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern. Start with upper bolts on one side, then upper on opposite side, then lower bolts in same pattern. This ensures even seating of the beam.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 10Install impact absorbersInstall new or reusable impact absorbers onto the front face of the reinforcement beam. Ensure they are properly seated and secured with all clips or adhesive as applicable. These absorbers are critical for proper crash energy management.
- 11Reinstall tail light assembliesIf removed, reinstall tail light assemblies by inserting them into their mounting locations, securing with mounting nuts, and reconnecting electrical connectors. Test operation before proceeding.
- 12Reconnect wiring and sensorsRoute all wiring harnesses back to their original positions and secure with retaining clips. Reconnect all parking sensor connectors, ensuring they click fully into place. Verify no wires are pinched or in positions where they could be damaged by the bumper cover.
- 13Reinstall rear bumper coverReconnect electrical connectors for sensors, camera, and lighting to the bumper cover. Position the bumper cover onto the vehicle, aligning it with previously made alignment marks if used. Press firmly along the upper edge to engage push clips. Install and torque all bumper cover bolts in the trunk area. Install cover screws in wheel well areas and underneath the vehicle.Torque specBumper Cover Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 14Final assemblyReinstall wheel well liners and secure with appropriate fasteners. Reinstall trunk liner and all trim panels removed during access. Reinstall rear wheels and torque lug nuts to specification. Lower vehicle from jack stands. If battery was disconnected, reconnect negative terminal.
Reassembly
- Replace any broken trim clips with new ones
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Check bumper cover gaps and alignment before final tightening
- Ensure wheel well liners are properly seated to prevent rubbing
Verification
- Verify bumper cover is properly aligned with body panels and has consistent gaps
- Test all parking sensors if equipped by turning on ignition and engaging reverse
- Test rear camera function if equipped
- Verify all lights function properly including brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lights
- Visually inspect underneath vehicle to ensure no loose hardware or hanging components
- Road test vehicle and verify no rattles or abnormal sounds from rear bumper area
