This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the charcoal canister (EVAP canister) on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, located under the vehicle near the fuel tank.

Warnings

⚠️Perform this work in a well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors may be present in the EVAP system components.
Do not perform this procedure immediately after driving. Allow fuel system to cool to ambient temperature.
The charcoal canister contains activated carbon that can create dust. Avoid breathing dust and handle carefully.
ℹ️The EVAP system is part of the emissions control system. Ensure all connections are properly sealed to avoid check engine lights.

Parts

  • Charcoal canister (EVAP canister) × 1 — 77740-06280 or equivalent OEM
  • EVAP line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Ensure engine is cool and vehicle has not been driven recently
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes
  4. Raise vehicle safely using jack and support securely on jack stands at manufacturer-approved lift points
  5. Remove plastic under-covers/splash shields beneath rear of vehicle if equipped (retain clips and fasteners)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate charcoal canister
From under the vehicle, locate the charcoal canister mounted near the fuel tank on the driver's side. It is a black cylindrical or rectangular component with multiple vapor lines connected to it. Identify all connected lines and the mounting bracket configuration.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector on the canister (connected to the vent valve solenoid on top of the canister). Press the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector. Move the harness aside to prevent damage.
  3. 3
    Release vapor line quick-connectors
The canister has multiple EVAP vapor lines connected via quick-connect fittings. These typically include lines from the fuel tank, purge line to engine, and vent line. Depress the locking tabs on each quick-connector while pulling the line straight off. Note the orientation and routing of each line for reinstallation. Some fuel vapor odor is normal.
  4. 4
    Disconnect threaded vapor line fittings
If your canister has threaded EVAP line fittings (some configurations use these in addition to quick-connects), use a 12mm wrench to carefully loosen and disconnect these fittings. Inspect O-rings for damage and discard - new O-rings must be used during reassembly.

  5. 5
    Remove canister mounting bolts
Using a 10mm or 12mm socket (depending on model year configuration), remove the bolts securing the charcoal canister to its mounting bracket. The canister is typically held by 2-3 bolts. Support the canister while removing the final bolt.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove charcoal canister
Carefully lower and remove the charcoal canister from the vehicle. Maneuver it past any nearby fuel lines or brake lines. Keep the canister upright and avoid shaking it excessively to prevent carbon dust from dispersing. Inspect the mounting bracket and surrounding area for damage or corrosion.
  7. 7
    Inspect and clean mounting area
Clean the mounting bracket and surrounding area of any debris, dirt, or carbon dust. Inspect all vapor line connections for cracks or damage. Check that the mounting bracket is secure and not corroded. Replace any damaged components as needed.
  8. 8
    Install new charcoal canister
Position the new charcoal canister into the mounting bracket, aligning the mounting holes. Keep vapor ports oriented correctly to match line routing. Install mounting bolts hand-tight initially to allow for adjustment.

  9. 9
    Torque mounting bolts
Using a torque wrench, tighten the canister mounting bolts to specification in a crossing pattern if multiple bolts are used. Ensure the canister is seated properly against the bracket before final torquing.

  10. 10
    Connect threaded vapor line fittings
If equipped with threaded EVAP line fittings, install new O-rings onto the fittings (lightly lubricate with clean engine oil). Thread fittings into canister ports by hand first to ensure proper engagement, then torque to specification using a torque wrench.

  11. 11
    Connect vapor line quick-connectors
Reconnect all EVAP vapor lines to the canister ports using the quick-connect fittings. Push each line straight onto its port until you hear and feel a distinct click. Gently pull on each line to verify it is locked in place. Ensure lines follow original routing without kinks or sharp bends.
  12. 12
    Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the canister vent valve solenoid. Ensure the connector locks fully into place with an audible click. Verify the wiring harness is secured and not hanging loosely.
  13. 13
    Reinstall under-covers
Reinstall any plastic under-covers or splash shields that were removed. Ensure all clips and fasteners are properly secured.

Reassembly

  1. Lower vehicle from jack stands safely
  2. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  3. Double-check that all vapor lines are securely connected and properly routed

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify it runs normally with no rough idle
  • Check for any fuel vapor odors around the canister area - there should be none
  • Use an OBD-II scanner to check for EVAP system codes (P0440, P0441, P0442, P0455, P0456). Clear any existing codes and perform a drive cycle
  • After 10-15 minutes of driving, re-scan for codes to ensure no EVAP system leaks are present
  • Verify the check engine light does not illuminate during normal operation
  • Perform a visual inspection under the vehicle to confirm all connections remain secure and no vapor lines are kinked
