This procedure covers removal and replacement of the cooling fan assembly on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, including the fan motor and shroud.
Warnings
⚠️Never work on cooling system when engine is hot. Allow engine to cool completely for at least 2 hours to avoid severe burns from hot coolant.
⚠The cooling fan may activate at any time when the ignition is on, even with engine off. Always disconnect battery negative terminal before working near the fan.
ℹ️This procedure may require partial coolant drain if upper radiator hose must be disconnected for clearance.

Parts
- Cooling fan assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Radiator hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) — 1 qt
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system to discharge
- Place drain pan under radiator if planning to drain coolant for additional clearance
Procedure
- 1Remove engine coverGrasp the engine cover firmly and pull upward to release the retaining clips. Set aside in a clean area.
- 2Disconnect fan motor electrical connectorLocate the cooling fan motor electrical connector on the fan shroud. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight out to disconnect. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reassembly.
- 3Remove upper radiator hose (if necessary)If access is restricted, loosen the upper radiator hose clamp at the radiator using pliers or a flathead screwdriver. Twist the hose to break the seal and carefully remove it from the radiator neck. Have a drain pan ready to catch any coolant spillage.⚠Coolant may spill when removing hose. Keep drain pan positioned to catch fluid and avoid skin contact.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 4Remove cooling fan assembly mounting boltsLocate the four mounting bolts securing the cooling fan assembly to the radiator. These are typically 10mm bolts positioned at the top and bottom corners of the fan shroud. Remove all four bolts using a socket and ratchet with extension as needed.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 5Remove cooling fan assemblyCarefully lift the cooling fan assembly straight up and out of the engine bay. Be mindful not to damage the radiator fins or AC condenser with the fan blades. Tilt the assembly as needed to maneuver it past any obstructions.⚠Fan blades and shroud edges can be sharp. Handle carefully to avoid cuts and damage to radiator fins.
- 6Inspect radiator and surrounding componentsWith the fan removed, visually inspect the radiator for damage, leaks, or debris. Check the rubber mounting grommets on the radiator for wear or cracking. Clean any debris from the radiator fins and AC condenser using compressed air if available.
- 7Install new cooling fan assemblyLower the new cooling fan assembly into position, aligning the mounting tabs with the radiator mounting points. Ensure the fan shroud sits flush against the radiator and that all mounting holes align properly. The assembly should drop into place with the lower tabs engaging first.
- 8Install and torque mounting boltsInstall all four cooling fan assembly mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque each bolt to specification in a diagonal pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) to ensure even pressure distribution.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect upper radiator hose (if removed)If the upper radiator hose was removed, reinstall it onto the radiator neck, ensuring it is fully seated. Position the hose clamp over the hose bead and tighten to specification. Ensure the hose is properly aligned and not kinked.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect fan motor electrical connectorReconnect the cooling fan motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Route the wiring harness as noted during disassembly, ensuring it is not pinched or in contact with any moving parts or hot surfaces.
- 11Refill coolant if drainedIf coolant was drained during the procedure, refill the cooling system with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink) through the radiator cap opening until the level reaches the base of the filler neck. Leave the cap off for bleeding.
- 12Reconnect battery and bleed cooling systemReconnect the negative battery terminal. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature with the radiator cap off. Monitor coolant level and add as needed while engine warms. Watch for proper fan operation when coolant temperature reaches normal range.⚠Keep hands clear of cooling fan during operation. Fan will cycle on and off automatically as coolant temperature changes.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage
- Top off coolant reservoir to FULL mark with engine at operating temperature
- Install radiator cap and ensure it is securely fastened
- Check for any coolant leaks around hose connections
Verification
- Start engine and verify cooling fan operates when engine reaches normal operating temperature (typically after 5-10 minutes of idling)
- Turn on air conditioning and verify fan operates at higher speed
- Check for any unusual noises from fan assembly during operation
- Inspect all hose connections for coolant leaks with engine at operating temperature
- Verify coolant level is at FULL mark on overflow reservoir when engine is cool
- Use scan tool to check for any cooling system related fault codes
