Perform a diagnostic scan using an OBD-II scanner to retrieve trouble codes and system data from the vehicle's computer systems.

Warnings

Ensure the vehicle is in a well-ventilated area if the engine will be running during diagnosis
ℹ️A generic OBD-II scanner will read basic powertrain codes; Toyota Techstream or equivalent is required for full system access including ABS, SRS, and body control modules

Tools required

OBD-II diagnostic scanner (generic or Toyota-specific)Essential
Flashlight
Pen and paper or mobile device for recording codes

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position
  3. Ensure all accessories are turned off (radio, climate control, lights)
  4. Locate the OBD-II diagnostic port under the driver's side dashboard, left of the steering column

Procedure

  1. 1
    Connect diagnostic scanner
Locate the 16-pin OBD-II port under the driver's side dashboard. It is typically positioned above the parking brake pedal area. Insert the OBD-II scanner connector firmly into the port until it seats completely. Ensure the connection is secure.
  2. 2
Power on the scanner and vehicle
Turn the vehicle ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine unless specifically required by the scanner). Most scanners will power on automatically when the ignition is turned on. Wait for the scanner to initialize and establish communication with the vehicle's ECU.
  3. 3
    Select vehicle information
On the scanner menu, select the correct vehicle year (2018-2024), make (Toyota), model (Camry), and engine type (2.5L I4). Some scanners will auto-detect this information via VIN. Verify the VIN displayed matches the vehicle being scanned.
  4. 4
    Read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
Navigate to the 'Read Codes' or 'DTCs' menu option. Select to read stored codes and pending codes. Record all codes displayed, including the code number (e.g., P0420) and the code description. Note whether codes are current/active or stored/pending.
  5. 5
    Review freeze frame data
Access the freeze frame data for each DTC. This shows the engine operating conditions (RPM, speed, coolant temperature, fuel trim values) at the moment the code was set. Record this information as it helps diagnose intermittent issues and verify conditions when the fault occurred.
  6. 6
    Check live data stream
Navigate to the live data or PID (Parameter ID) menu. Review current sensor readings including engine RPM, coolant temperature, intake air temperature, throttle position, oxygen sensor voltages, fuel trims, and MAF sensor values. Compare readings to known good specifications to identify any out-of-range values.
  7. 7
    Perform system readiness check
Access the readiness monitors or I/M readiness menu. Check the status of all emission system monitors (Catalyst, Evaporative System, Oxygen Sensor, etc.). Record which monitors show 'Ready' or 'Not Ready'. All monitors except EVAP and Oxygen Sensor should be 'Ready' immediately after key-on; these two may require a drive cycle.
  8. 8
    Document findings
Create a comprehensive record of all DTCs, freeze frame data, live data anomalies, and readiness monitor status. Note the date and current odometer reading. This documentation is essential for tracking repairs and verifying code clearing after service.
  9. 9
    Disconnect scanner
Exit all menus and return to the main screen on the scanner. Turn the vehicle ignition to OFF. Remove the OBD-II scanner connector from the diagnostic port by pressing any release tabs and pulling straight out. Store the scanner properly.

Reassembly

  1. No reassembly required for diagnostic scanning
  2. If any panels were removed to access the OBD-II port, reinstall them securely

Verification

  • Verify all diagnostic trouble codes were recorded accurately with both code numbers and descriptions
  • Confirm freeze frame data was documented for intermittent issue diagnosis
  • Ensure readiness monitor status was checked if emission testing or recent repairs were performed
  • Review live data for any obvious out-of-specification sensor readings that require immediate attention
