This procedure drains and refills the front transaxle differential fluid on FWD 2018-2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L vehicles to maintain proper lubrication and extend component life.

Warnings

⚠️Engine and transaxle fluid may be extremely hot if recently driven. Allow at least 30 minutes cool-down time before starting work.
Vehicle must be level during fill procedure to ensure correct fluid level. Uneven surfaces will result in overfill or underfill.
ℹ️The differential shares fluid with the transmission on this FWD transaxle design. This service only drains a portion of total ATF capacity.

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
17mm socket or wrenchEssential
Torque wrench (10-50 Nm range)Essential
Fluid pump or squeeze bottle with tubeEssential
Drain pan (minimum 3 quart capacity)Essential
Jack and jack standsEssential
Wheel chocksEssential
Funnel (if using fill method from dipstick)
Clean ragsEssential

Parts

  • Drain plug washer × 1 — 90430-18008 or equivalent

Fluids

  • Toyota WS ATF — 1.5 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine and transaxle to cool if recently driven
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  5. Remove engine under cover if equipped (10mm fasteners)

Procedure

  1. 1
    Locate differential drain plug
Position drain pan under the front of the transaxle. The differential drain plug is located on the lower front section of the transaxle housing, facing forward. It is a 17mm hex plug, separate from the main transmission pan drain plug.
  2. 2
Remove drain plug and drain fluid
Using a 17mm socket or wrench, carefully loosen and remove the drain plug. Allow fluid to drain completely into the pan (approximately 1-1.5 quarts). Inspect the drain plug threads and sealing surface for damage. Remove and discard the old crush washer from the drain plug.

  3. 3
Install drain plug with new washer
Place a new crush washer onto the drain plug. Thread the drain plug into the transaxle housing by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Torque the drain plug to specification using a torque wrench.

  4. 4
    Locate fill plug
The fill plug is located on the side of the transaxle housing, approximately mid-height. Clean the area around the 17mm hex fill plug to prevent contamination. This plug serves as both the fill point and level check.
  5. 5
Remove fill plug and prepare to fill
Using a 17mm socket or wrench, remove the fill plug completely. Ensure the vehicle is level front-to-back and side-to-side. Prepare the fluid pump with Toyota WS ATF.
Only use Toyota WS ATF. Other ATF types may cause shifting problems or component damage.

    Fill Plug41 Nm (30 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Fill differential to proper level
Insert the pump tube into the fill plug hole. Slowly pump Toyota WS ATF into the transaxle until fluid begins to drip steadily from the fill hole. The correct level is reached when fluid just begins to overflow. Add approximately 1.2-1.5 quarts total.
ℹ️Fill slowly to allow air to escape and prevent overfilling. Fluid should trickle out when at proper level.
  7. 7
    Install fill plug
Once fluid drips from the fill hole, quickly thread the fill plug in by hand to minimize spillage. Wipe away any spilled fluid. Torque the fill plug to specification using a torque wrench.

  8. 8
    Clean and inspect
Wipe down the transaxle housing to remove any spilled fluid. Inspect both drain and fill plugs for leaks. Check that no tools or materials were left in the work area.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine under cover if removed, torquing fasteners to specification
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Remove wheel chocks
  4. Dispose of used ATF properly at a recycling center

Verification

  • Start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for leaks around drain and fill plugs
  • With engine running, shift through all gear positions (P-R-N-D and back to P) pausing 2 seconds in each position
  • Check fluid level again at operating temperature if needed by removing fill plug with engine off - fluid should be at bottom of fill hole threads
  • Test drive vehicle and verify smooth shifting operation with no unusual noises from transaxle
