This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the dimmer switch (combination switch) on the steering column of a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before beginning work to allow the airbag system to fully discharge. Failure to do so may result in accidental airbag deployment.
⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel with the combination switch or steering column disconnected, as this can damage the spiral cable (clock spring) and cause airbag malfunction.
⚠Mark the steering wheel position before removal to ensure proper alignment during reassembly.

Parts
- Dimmer switch (combination switch assembly) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key/fob from vehicle
- Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position
- Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal
- Wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Mark the steering wheel position relative to the steering column with masking tape for alignment reference
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversUse a trim removal tool to carefully pry off the lower steering column cover. Remove the Phillips head screws securing the upper and lower column covers (typically 2-3 screws). Separate the upper cover from the lower cover and set aside.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Access the combination switch connectorLocate the main electrical connector on the back of the combination switch assembly. This is a large multi-pin connector. Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If present, disconnect any additional smaller connectors for lighting or controls.
- 3Remove combination switch mounting screwsLocate the two Phillips head screws securing the combination switch assembly to the steering column (one on each side). Remove both screws completely. Keep these screws in a safe place as they will be reused.Torque specConnector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 4Remove dimmer switch assemblyWith the mounting screws removed, gently slide the combination switch assembly off the steering column shaft. The switch may have alignment pins or guides, so pull straight back without tilting. If resistance is felt, check for any additional fasteners or clips.
- 5Inspect spiral cable and columnWith the switch removed, visually inspect the spiral cable (clock spring) behind the switch location for any signs of damage, wear, or displaced wiring. Verify the steering column shaft is clean and free of debris. Do not rotate the spiral cable or steering wheel at this time.⚠If the spiral cable appears damaged or the airbag light was previously illuminated, the spiral cable may also need replacement.
- 6Prepare new dimmer switchRemove the new combination switch from packaging. Compare the new switch to the old switch to verify correct part. Check that all electrical connector pins are straight and undamaged. If the switch has a neutral position lock pin or shipping lock, remove it according to manufacturer instructions.
- 7Install new combination switchAlign the new combination switch assembly with the steering column shaft, ensuring any alignment pins or guides are properly positioned. Slide the switch straight onto the column until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify the switch moves freely through all positions (dimmer up/down, turn signal left/right).
- 8Install and torque mounting screwsInsert both mounting screws into the combination switch. Hand-tighten both screws first, then use a torque wrench to tighten to specification in a cross pattern (alternate between left and right screw). Verify the switch remains properly seated and operates smoothly after tightening.Torque specConnector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the main electrical connector to the combination switch, pressing firmly until the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect any additional smaller connectors. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 10Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and align with the lower cover. Install and hand-tighten all cover screws, then torque to specification. Ensure covers are properly aligned with no gaps and do not interfere with switch operation.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect battery and initialize systemReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Do not overtighten to avoid damaging the terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe the instrument cluster for any warning lights. The airbag light should illuminate briefly then extinguish.ℹ️Some vehicles may require steering angle sensor calibration after switch replacement. Check for steering angle sensor warning lights.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all column covers are properly seated and secured
- Check that no tools or parts were left in the steering column area
- Confirm the steering wheel is still in the straight-ahead position marked during preparation
Verification
- With ignition ON, test dimmer switch function by moving the stalk up and down to verify high and low beam operation
- Test turn signal function in both left and right positions, verify indicator lights work properly
- Test headlight flash function by pulling the stalk toward you
- Verify the airbag warning light extinguishes after approximately 6 seconds with ignition ON
- Start the engine and verify all lighting functions work correctly under load
- Test that the combination switch returns to center position properly after turn signal use
- Check for any abnormal noises or resistance when operating the switch
- Verify no warning lights remain illuminated on the instrument cluster
