Parts

  • Exterior door handle assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Door panel trim clips (assorted) × 5 — 90467-09139 or equivalent
  • Door handle gasket/seal × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Open the door to be serviced and secure in open position
  3. Lower the window completely to prevent glass damage
  4. Gather all tools and replacement parts before starting
  5. Apply masking tape around handle area to protect paint if desired

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove door panel trim clips
Using the flat-head trim removal tool, carefully pry out the trim clips securing the lower edge of the door panel. Start at the rear bottom corner and work forward. There are typically 6-8 clips along the bottom and sides. Pull the panel away gently once clips are released.
  2. 2
    Remove door panel mounting screws
Locate and remove the Phillips screws behind the door pull handle recess and in the armrest area. There are typically 2 screws total. Remove the small cover cap in the door pull area to access the hidden screw.
  3. 3
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Carefully lift the door panel upward and away from the door frame. Reach behind and disconnect all electrical connectors including power window switch, power lock switch, and any courtesy lights. Note connector positions for reassembly.
  4. 4
    Remove vapor barrier (partial)
Peel back the plastic vapor barrier just enough to access the door handle mounting area. Do not remove completely. Use care to avoid tearing the barrier, as it provides moisture protection.
  5. 5
Disconnect lock rod and key cylinder
Locate the door lock connecting rod attached to the handle assembly. Carefully unclip the rod from the handle mechanism. If equipped with a key cylinder, disconnect the cylinder from the handle body by releasing the retaining clip.

  6. 6
Disconnect keyless entry connector (if equipped)
If the vehicle has keyless entry, locate the electrical connector on the back of the handle assembly. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector. Note the routing path of the wire harness.
  7. 7
    Remove handle mounting bolts
Using the 10mm socket, remove the two mounting bolts securing the exterior door handle to the door frame. These bolts are accessed from inside the door cavity. Support the handle from outside while removing the final bolt to prevent dropping.
    Torque spec
    Handle Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Remove exterior handle assembly
From the outside of the door, carefully slide the handle assembly rearward (toward the rear of the vehicle) approximately 10mm to disengage it from the door frame slot. Then lift it out of the door. Remove the gasket/seal from the door if it did not come out with the handle.
  9. 9
    Install new handle assembly
Install the new gasket/seal into the door opening if not pre-installed on the new handle. Position the new handle assembly into the door opening, ensuring the alignment tab engages properly. Slide the handle forward to lock it into the door frame slot.
  10. 10
Install and torque handle mounting bolts
From inside the door cavity, insert and hand-tighten both mounting bolts. Using a torque wrench, tighten the bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the handle against the door.
    Torque spec
    Handle Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Reconnect lock rod and key cylinder
Reconnect the door lock rod to the new handle mechanism, ensuring it clicks securely into place. If equipped with a key cylinder, install it into the handle and secure with the retaining clip. Test the lock mechanism from inside before proceeding.
    Torque spec
    Lock Rod Clips5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  12. 12
Reconnect keyless entry connector (if equipped)
If equipped with keyless entry, reconnect the electrical connector to the handle assembly. Ensure the connector locks firmly in place and the harness is routed properly without pinch points.
  13. 13
    Test handle operation
Before reinstalling the door panel, test the exterior handle operation multiple times. Verify the door opens smoothly and the latch engages properly when closed. If equipped with keyless entry, test the touch sensor function.
  14. 14
Reinstall vapor barrier and door panel
Press the vapor barrier back into position, ensuring a complete seal. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel switches and lights. Position the door panel over the door frame and press the top edge into the window channel. Install mounting screws and torque cover screws to specification. Press trim clips firmly into place along the panel edges.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are properly seated and locked
  2. Ensure all trim clips are fully engaged before applying pressure to door panel
  3. Replace any broken trim clips with new ones from parts inventory
  4. Test window operation after door panel installation to ensure no interference

Verification

  • Open and close the door from both inside and outside handles multiple times to verify smooth operation
  • Verify the door locks and unlocks properly using both interior and exterior controls
