This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a door hinge on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry, including proper alignment and torque specifications.

Warnings

⚠️Door assembly weighs approximately 50-60 lbs. Ensure adequate support before removing hinge bolts to prevent door falling and causing injury.
Improper hinge alignment can cause door misalignment, wind noise, water leaks, and premature weatherstrip wear.
ℹ️Front and rear door hinges are not interchangeable. Verify correct replacement part before installation.

Parts

  • Door hinge assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Door trim clips × 5 — 90467-07201 or equivalent
  • Hinge pin grease × 1 — Toyota 00289-ATFWS or lithium grease

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal if working on front door with power windows/locks to prevent accidental activation
  3. Open door to full open position and place door support stand or padded jack under door edge near outer corner
  4. Cover fender and adjacent body panels with protective blankets to prevent damage during door removal
  5. Mark hinge position on door and body pillar with grease marker or tape to aid in reinstallation alignment

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove door trim panel lower section
Remove the lower door trim panel to access interior hinge bolts. Use trim removal tools to carefully pry out trim clips starting from bottom edge. Remove Torx screws securing trim panel if present on your specific door configuration. Set aside trim panel and clips in organized manner.
  2. 2
    Disconnect door wiring harness
If replacing front door hinge, locate wiring harness connector between door and body pillar. Press release tab and disconnect harness. On models with door-mounted speakers or power features, carefully feed harness through door opening to provide slack. Mark connector orientation for reassembly.
  3. 3
    Remove door check strap
Locate door check strap mounting bolt on door or pillar side. Use 12mm socket to remove mounting bolt. Support check strap to prevent it from falling. This allows full door separation from body.

  4. 4
    Support door weight
Adjust door support stand or jack to firmly contact door bottom edge near outer corner. Door should be fully supported and stable. Have assistant hold door if support stand is not available. Verify door cannot fall before proceeding.
  5. 5
    Remove body-side hinge bolts
Using 12mm socket, loosen and remove the hinge bolts securing hinge to body pillar. There are typically 2-3 bolts per hinge. Start with upper bolts first while door is still partially secured. Keep bolts organized and note any shims or spacers present for reinstallation.
⚠️Ensure door is properly supported before removing final hinge bolt to prevent door from falling.

  6. 6
    Remove door-side hinge bolts
With door still supported, remove the hinge bolts securing hinge to door frame. Use 12mm socket to remove 2-3 bolts per hinge from inside door frame. If replacing only one hinge on two-hinge door, leave opposite hinge connected and only lower door slightly on support.

  7. 7
    Remove old hinge assembly
With all bolts removed, carefully lift hinge assembly away from door and body pillar. If hinge is seized or corroded, gently work it free without damaging mounting surfaces. Inspect mounting surfaces on both door and body pillar for damage, rust, or deformation that may affect new hinge installation.
  8. 8
    Prepare new hinge assembly
Inspect new hinge for proper fit and matching mounting holes. Apply thin coat of lithium grease to hinge pin and pivot points. Transfer any shims or spacers from old hinge to new hinge in same positions. Clean mounting surfaces on door and body pillar with wire brush if corrosion is present.
  9. 9
    Install hinge to body pillar
Position new hinge on body pillar aligning with marked reference lines from preparation step. Install body-side hinge bolts and tighten hand-tight only at this stage. Ensure any shims or spacers are properly positioned. Do not fully torque bolts yet to allow for alignment adjustment.
  10. 10
    Attach hinge to door
With assistant or door support holding door in approximate position, align hinge with door frame mounting holes. Install door-side hinge bolts hand-tight. Check door alignment with adjacent body panels, ensuring even gaps at top, bottom, front and rear edges. Adjust hinge position as needed before final torquing.
  11. 11
    Torque hinge bolts to specification
Once door alignment is verified, torque body-side hinge bolts (pillar side) to 30.0 Nm (22 lb-ft) in cross pattern. Then torque door-side hinge bolts (door frame side) to 27.0 Nm (20 lb-ft) in cross pattern. Recheck door alignment after torquing and make minor adjustments if necessary by loosening, adjusting, and re-torquing.
Do not exceed specified torque values as this may strip threads in door frame or crack hinge mounting points.

  12. 12
    Reinstall door check strap
Position door check strap to mounting point on door or pillar. Install mounting bolt and torque to 27.0 Nm (20 lb-ft). Verify check strap operates smoothly through full range of motion and holds door at detent positions.

  13. 13
    Reconnect wiring harness
Route door wiring harness through body opening ensuring adequate slack for door operation. Connect harness connector ensuring it clicks fully into place. Verify connector orientation matches marks made during disassembly. Test power windows, locks, and mirrors if applicable before reinstalling trim.
  14. 14
    Reinstall door trim panel
Position lower door trim panel and align with mounting points. Install new trim clips if originals were damaged during removal. Press trim panel firmly into place ensuring all clips seat properly. Install any Torx screws and torque to 11.0 Nm (8 lb-ft) if applicable.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect negative battery terminal if disconnected
  2. Apply thin coat of silicone spray to weatherstripping if door seal appears compressed from work
  3. Cycle door through full open and close range multiple times to verify proper operation
  4. Remove protective coverings from fender and body panels

Verification

  • Check door panel gaps are even with adjacent body panels (typically 4-6mm uniform gap)
  • Verify door opens and closes smoothly without binding or excessive force required
  • Confirm door latches securely and flush with body when closed
  • Check that door check strap holds door at each detent position
  • Test all electrical functions including power windows, locks, and mirrors
  • Inspect for wind noise or water leaks by closing door and checking seal compression around entire perimeter
  • Verify door does not sag when fully opened - should maintain position without drooping
