This procedure covers removal and replacement of the engine oil cooler assembly on the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine, including draining coolant and disconnecting cooling system lines.
Warnings

⚠Coolant is toxic to pets and wildlife. Collect all drained coolant and dispose of properly at a recycling facility.
⚠The oil cooler contains both engine oil and coolant. Have adequate drain pans positioned to catch mixed fluids.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Allow engine to cool for at least 2 hours if previously running
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and isolate cable
- Remove engine splash shield and undercover panels if necessary for access
- Position drain pan under radiator drain plug location
- Take photos of oil cooler hose and line connections for reference during reassembly

- 1Drain cooling systemOpen the radiator drain plug or petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Drain approximately 2-3 quarts of coolant into the drain pan. Close the drain plug once coolant level is below the oil cooler mounting location on the engine block.Torque specCoolant Drain Plug15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 2Remove engine coverRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the four retention points. The cover is held by press-fit grommets. Set aside in a clean area.
- 3Locate oil cooler assemblyThe oil cooler is mounted on the front lower left side of the engine block, below the oil filter housing. It is a cylindrical aluminum component with coolant hoses and oil lines connected. Identify all connections before proceeding.
- 4Disconnect coolant hosesUsing hose clamp pliers or screwdriver, loosen the hose clamps on both coolant inlet and outlet hoses connected to the oil cooler. Twist hoses gently to break any seal, then pull away from oil cooler fittings. Have rags ready to catch residual coolant drainage.⚠Coolant will drain from disconnected hoses. - 5Disconnect engine oil linesLocate the engine oil supply and return lines connected to the oil cooler. These are typically hard lines with threaded fittings. Using a flare nut wrench, carefully loosen and remove both oil line connections. Place a drain pan underneath to catch oil spillage. Cap or plug open lines immediately to prevent contamination.⚠Engine oil will drain from disconnected lines. Expect approximately 0.5 quarts of oil loss.
- 6Remove oil cooler mounting boltsThe oil cooler is secured to the engine block with two or three mounting bolts. Using a 12mm socket, remove all mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern. Support the oil cooler assembly with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from dropping.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 7Remove oil cooler assemblyCarefully pull the oil cooler assembly away from the engine block. There may be an O-ring seal that causes resistance. Wiggle gently while pulling to break the seal. Once removed, hold the cooler over a drain pan to allow residual oil and coolant to drain completely.
- 8Clean mounting surfaceThoroughly clean the oil cooler mounting surface on the engine block using a plastic scraper and clean shop rags. Remove all old gasket material, O-ring residue, and debris. The surface must be completely clean and dry for proper seal of the new oil cooler. Inspect the mounting surface for damage or deep scratches.
- 9Install new O-rings and gasketsInstall new O-rings onto the replacement oil cooler assembly. Lightly lubricate the O-rings with clean engine oil to aid installation and prevent tearing. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean and properly positioned in their grooves.
- 10Install new oil coolerCarefully align the new oil cooler assembly with the mounting holes on the engine block. Press the cooler firmly against the block to seat the O-ring seals. Install all mounting bolts finger-tight initially, then torque to specification in a crisscross pattern using a torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts27 Nm (20 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect engine oil linesRemove protective caps from oil lines. Thread the oil supply and return lines onto the oil cooler fittings by hand first to ensure proper thread engagement. Once hand-tight, use a flare nut wrench to snug the connections. Do not over-tighten as this can damage the fittings.
- 12Reconnect coolant hosesSlide coolant hoses fully onto the oil cooler inlet and outlet fittings until they seat completely. Position new hose clamps over the hose connection points and tighten to specification using a socket or hose clamp pliers. Ensure clamps are positioned properly on the hose barb.Torque specHose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 13Refill cooling systemUsing Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (Pink), refill the cooling system through the radiator cap or coolant reservoir to the proper level. Add approximately 2.5 quarts or until coolant reaches the FULL mark on the reservoir. Use a no-spill funnel if available to minimize spillage.
- 14Bleed cooling systemStart the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature with the heater on maximum. Watch the coolant level and add coolant as needed while air purges from the system. Rev engine to 2500 RPM several times to help purge air bubbles. Once engine reaches operating temperature and cooling fan cycles, turn off engine and allow to cool. Recheck coolant level when cold and top off as necessary.⚠Monitor engine temperature gauge closely during bleeding process. Do not allow engine to overheat.
- 15Check engine oil levelCheck engine oil level on dipstick. Due to oil loss during cooler removal, the level may be low. Add Toyota Genuine 0W-20 engine oil as needed to bring level to the full mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning grommets and pressing firmly until seated
- Reinstall any splash shields or undercovers removed during preparation
- Reconnect negative battery terminal
- Double-check all hose clamps and connections for tightness
- Wipe down any coolant or oil residue from engine bay components
Verification
- Start engine and verify no coolant or oil leaks from oil cooler connections
- Allow engine to reach operating temperature and verify proper cooling system operation
- Check for leaks around oil cooler after engine reaches full operating temperature
- Verify coolant level remains stable in reservoir after test drive
- Monitor oil pressure gauge or warning light to confirm normal oil pressure
- Perform a short test drive and recheck all connections for leaks afterward
- Recheck coolant and oil levels after vehicle has cooled completely
