Parts
- Fuel cap × 1 — Toyota OEM 77300-06160 or equivalent
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and turn off engine
- Allow fuel system to cool if vehicle was recently operated
- Locate fuel filler door release (if applicable) on driver's side lower dash panel
Procedure
- 1Open fuel filler doorPress the fuel filler door release button located on the lower left side of the driver's side dashboard, or manually push the fuel door if it is not equipped with a release mechanism. The door will pop open on the left rear quarter panel.
- 2Remove old fuel capTurn the fuel cap counterclockwise (left) until it releases from the filler neck. The cap will click multiple times as it loosens. Continue turning until the cap is completely free. Remove the cap and tether from the filler neck.
- 3Inspect filler neck sealExamine the rubber seal inside the fuel filler neck for damage, debris, or contamination. Clean the sealing surface with a lint-free cloth if necessary. Ensure there are no cracks or deformation around the neck opening.
- 4Install new fuel capAlign the new fuel cap with the filler neck threads. Turn the cap clockwise (right) until you hear at least three distinct clicks. This ensures proper sealing and prevents evaporative emissions leaks. Do not over-tighten beyond the clicking point.
- 5Close fuel filler doorPress the fuel filler door firmly until it latches closed. Verify it sits flush with the body panel.
Reassembly
- No reassembly required for this procedure
Verification
- Verify the fuel cap is securely tightened and clicks audibly when installed
- Confirm the fuel filler door closes and latches properly
- If the check engine light was on due to a fuel cap issue, it may take several drive cycles for the light to clear, or use an OBD-II scanner to clear the code after verifying proper installation
- Perform a visual inspection to ensure no fuel odor is present around the filler neck area
