This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the engine bay fuse box assembly on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, including disconnection of electrical connectors and proper grounding procedures.
Warnings
⚠️Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before beginning work to prevent electrical short circuits and airbag deployment.
⚠Do not force electrical connectors during removal or installation. Damaged connectors can cause multiple electrical system failures.
⚠Ensure all ground connections are clean and properly torqued. Poor grounds cause multiple electrical faults that are difficult to diagnose.
ℹ️Take detailed photos of all connector positions and wire routing before disassembly. The engine bay fuse box has numerous connectors that must be reinstalled correctly.

Parts
- Engine bay fuse box assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Fuse box cover × 1 — Usually reuses existing
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key from vehicle
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Locate the engine bay fuse box on the driver's side of the engine compartment near the strut tower
- Take multiple photos of the fuse box from different angles showing all connector positions
- Label each major connector with masking tape and marker noting its position
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before proceeding
Procedure
- 1Remove fuse box coverPress the tabs on the sides of the fuse box cover and lift upward to remove. Set the cover aside in a clean location. Note the location of any attached diagrams or labels for reinstallation.
- 2Document fuse and relay positionsTake a clear photo of all fuse and relay positions inside the box. Use masking tape to label any non-standard fuses or relays that have been replaced with different amperage ratings. This documentation is critical for proper reinstallation.
- 3Remove fuses and relaysUsing the fuse puller tool located inside the fuse box cover, carefully remove all fuses and relays from the box. Place them in a labeled container or arrange them in the same pattern on a clean surface to maintain their positions. Inspect each fuse for damage or corrosion.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsWorking from top to bottom, disconnect all electrical connectors from the fuse box. Most connectors have a locking tab that must be lifted or pressed before the connector can be pulled straight away from the box. Do not pull on wires. There are typically 4-6 large multi-pin connectors on this fuse box assembly. Spray electrical contact cleaner into each connector and inspect for corrosion or damage.⚠Press the locking mechanism fully before attempting to remove connectors. Forcing locked connectors will break the tabs and require replacement.
- 5Remove ground strap connectionsLocate the ground strap(s) attached to the fuse box mounting bracket. Remove the ground strap bolt(s) and carefully set aside the ground strap. Note the exact position and orientation of the ground strap for reinstallation. Use a wire brush to clean both the ground strap terminal and the mounting surface until bare metal is visible.⚠Ground straps must have clean metal-to-metal contact. Paint or corrosion at ground points causes multiple electrical system malfunctions.Torque specGround Strap Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 6Remove fuse box mounting boltsRemove the mounting bolts securing the fuse box assembly to the inner fender and/or bracket. There are typically 2-3 bolts holding the assembly in place. Support the fuse box with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Remove fuse box bracketIf replacing the complete assembly including bracket, remove the bracket bolts securing the mounting bracket to the inner fender. The bracket may have 2-4 bolts depending on configuration. Inspect the bracket for cracks or damage.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 8Remove fuse box assemblyCarefully maneuver the fuse box assembly out of the engine bay, routing any attached wiring through the mounting area. Some harness clips may need to be released to provide enough slack for removal. Inspect the mounting area for debris, corrosion, or damage.
- 9Prepare mounting surfacesClean all mounting surfaces on the inner fender and bracket with electrical contact cleaner. Use sandpaper or a wire brush to remove any corrosion from ground mounting points until bare metal is visible. Inspect all mounting bolt holes for thread damage.
- 10Install bracket (if removed)Position the mounting bracket in place on the inner fender, ensuring proper alignment with mounting holes. Install bracket bolts and tighten to specification in a cross pattern.Torque specBracket Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 11Install new fuse box assemblyPosition the new fuse box assembly onto the mounting bracket, routing any attached wiring through the proper channels. Align the mounting holes with the bracket. Install mounting bolts hand-tight initially to allow for alignment adjustment.
- 12Torque mounting boltsVerify the fuse box is properly seated and aligned, then torque the mounting bolts to specification. Check that the fuse box does not move or flex after tightening.ℹ️Proper mounting is critical to prevent connector damage from vibration and movement.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect ground strapsPosition the ground strap(s) in their original locations, ensuring the terminal sits flush against the cleaned mounting surface with no paint or corrosion between surfaces. Install and torque the ground strap bolt(s) to specification.Torque specGround Strap Bolt14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect electrical connectorsUsing your photos and labels as reference, reconnect all electrical connectors to the fuse box in their original positions. Push each connector firmly until it clicks into place, then verify the locking tab is fully engaged. Apply dielectric grease to connector seals if desired for corrosion protection.⚠Verify each connector clicks and locks properly. Loose connections cause intermittent electrical problems.
- 15Install fuses and relaysUsing your documentation, reinstall all fuses and relays into their correct positions in the fuse box. Ensure each fuse and relay is fully seated. Verify that amperage ratings match the diagram on the fuse box cover.
- 16Reinstall fuse box coverPosition the fuse box cover over the assembly, ensuring any attached diagrams are visible. Press down firmly until all tabs click into place and the cover is secure.
- 17Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post.⚠Overtightening battery terminals can crack the battery case or damage the terminal post.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Confirm all ground connections are tight and have clean metal-to-metal contact
- Ensure fuse box cover is properly installed with all tabs engaged
- Remove all tools and materials from engine bay before testing
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine and verify instrument cluster lights up normally
- Check for warning lights on instrument cluster and clear any diagnostic codes related to battery disconnection
- Test operation of all major electrical systems: headlights, turn signals, horn, power windows, radio, climate control
- Start engine and verify normal operation with no warning lights
- Test operation of engine-related systems: cooling fans, throttle response, transmission shift behavior
- With engine running, verify charging system shows 13.5-14.5 volts at battery terminals
- Perform a road test and verify all electrical systems function normally under driving conditions
- After road test, inspect fuse box area for any loose connections or unusual heat
- Scan for diagnostic trouble codes to confirm no electrical system faults are present
