Warnings
⚠Never touch the glass portion of a halogen bulb with bare hands. Oil from skin causes hot spots that shorten bulb life or cause immediate failure.
⚠Allow engine and headlight assembly to cool completely before starting work to prevent burns.
ℹ️This procedure covers bulb replacement only. If the entire headlight assembly requires removal, additional steps are required.
Tools required
Flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool
Gloves (cotton or nitrile)Essential
Clean cloth
Parts
- Headlight bulb (H11 low beam or 9005 high beam) × 1 — H11 for low beam, 9005 for high beam - Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off engine
- Allow headlight assembly to cool for at least 15 minutes if recently used
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Put on clean gloves to prevent skin oil contact with new bulb
Procedure
- 1Access headlight bulb areaLocate the headlight assembly from the engine bay side. The low beam bulb is typically positioned toward the outer edge of the headlight, while the high beam is more central. Identify which bulb needs replacement based on the connector location and dust cover position.
- 2Remove dust coverRotate the rubber dust cover counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn and pull it straight out from the back of the headlight assembly. The dust cover protects the bulb socket from moisture and debris. Set it aside in a clean location.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the tab on the bulb's electrical connector and pull it straight back to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
- 4Remove bulb retaining clipThe bulb is secured by a wire retaining clip. Press the clip inward toward the bulb and lift up to release it from its locked position. Swing the clip away from the bulb socket to provide clearance for bulb removal.
- 5Remove old bulbCarefully pull the bulb straight out from the socket. Avoid twisting or rocking the bulb excessively. Inspect the socket for any signs of heat damage, corrosion, or moisture intrusion before proceeding.
- 6Install new bulbWhile wearing gloves, remove the new bulb from its packaging. Hold the bulb by the base only, never touching the glass. Insert the new bulb into the socket, ensuring the tabs on the bulb base align with the slots in the socket. Push firmly until fully seated.
- 7Secure retaining clipSwing the wire retaining clip back into position over the bulb base. Press down and ensure it clicks into its locked position, securing the bulb firmly in place. Verify the clip is fully engaged on both sides.
- 8Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the bulb terminals and push it straight on until you hear or feel a click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully seated and locked.
- 9Reinstall dust coverAlign the rubber dust cover with the opening on the back of the headlight assembly. Press it into place and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn to lock it. Ensure it is fully seated with no gaps to maintain weather sealing.
Reassembly
- Close hood securely
- Dispose of old bulb properly according to local regulations
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Turn on headlights and verify the replaced bulb illuminates correctly
- Check both low beam and high beam function if applicable
- Verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster
- Inspect from outside the vehicle to confirm proper beam pattern and alignment
