Parts
- Horn assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes before proceeding
Procedure
- 1Diagnose horn systemBefore replacing the horn, verify the issue. Have an assistant press the horn button while you listen for clicking at the horn relay (located in the engine compartment fuse box). If relay clicks but horn doesn't sound, the horn itself is likely faulty. If no click, check fuse #30 (10A HORN) in the engine compartment fuse box. Use multimeter to verify 12V at horn connector when horn button is pressed.
- 2Access horn locationFrom above the engine bay, look down toward the driver side of the radiator support. The horn is mounted on a bracket behind the bumper cover, accessible from above without removing the bumper. You may need to move aside the windshield washer reservoir hose for better access. Use a flashlight to locate the horn and its mounting bolt.
- 3Disconnect horn electrical connectorLocate the single-wire connector on the horn. Press the locking tab and pull the connector straight off the horn terminal. Inspect connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If terminals are corroded, clean with electrical contact cleaner.
- 4Remove horn mounting boltUsing a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the horn to its mounting bracket. The horn is grounded through this mounting bolt, so note the position of any ground straps or washers. Keep track of the bolt and any washers for reinstallation.
- 5Remove horn assemblyCarefully extract the horn from its mounting location. The horn may be tight due to the surrounding components. Wiggle it gently while pulling upward to clear any obstructions. Inspect the mounting bracket for damage or excessive corrosion.
- 6Prepare mounting surfacesClean the horn mounting bracket and ground contact point with a wire brush or sandpaper to ensure good electrical ground. Remove any rust, paint, or corrosion from the contact surfaces. A poor ground connection is a common cause of horn failure.
- 7Install new hornPosition the new horn onto the mounting bracket, ensuring the mounting surface makes clean metal-to-metal contact for proper grounding. Align the bolt hole and hand-thread the mounting bolt with any original washers in their correct positions.
- 8Torque horn mounting boltUsing a torque wrench and 10mm socket, tighten the horn mounting bolt to specification. This bolt provides both mechanical retention and electrical ground, so proper torque is important for reliable operation.Torque specHorn Mounting Bolt15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the horn terminal until you hear or feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is securely locked. Ensure the wire routing matches the original configuration and doesn't contact hot or moving components.
- 10Reconnect battery and reposition componentsReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Reposition any hoses or components that were moved for access. Close the hood.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are secure and properly routed
- Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine compartment
- Reset power windows by holding down each window switch for 2 seconds after full closure
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Press horn button on steering wheel - horn should sound immediately with clear, loud tone
- Verify horn sounds for as long as button is pressed and stops immediately when released
- Check for any abnormal clicking, buzzing, or weak horn sound which may indicate poor ground connection
- Verify all moved components are properly secured and hoses are correctly routed
