This procedure covers removal and replacement of the HVAC control panel (climate control head unit) in the center dashboard of a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine.

Warnings

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds before working on any electrical components to prevent airbag deployment and electrical damage.
ℹ️The HVAC control panel retains climate control settings in memory. No recalibration is required after replacement on most models.
Trim panels and clips are fragile. Use proper plastic trim tools to avoid cracking the dashboard components.

Parts

  • HVAC control panel assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification - varies by trim level

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds
  4. Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been running with HVAC on
  5. Gather all tools and replacement parts before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower dashboard trim panel
Using plastic trim tools, carefully pry off the lower dashboard trim panel below the HVAC controls. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter. This panel is held by plastic clips only. Pull gently away from the dashboard once all clips are released.
  2. 2
Remove center console upper trim bezel
Pry out the center console upper trim bezel surrounding the HVAC control panel and audio unit. Start at the lower corners near the cup holders and work upward. This bezel typically has 6-8 clips around the perimeter. Pull the bezel forward approximately 2 inches but do not remove completely yet.
  3. 3
    Disconnect hazard switch connector
Reach behind the trim bezel and locate the hazard switch electrical connector. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector. Now fully remove the trim bezel from the vehicle and set aside safely.
  4. 4
Remove HVAC control panel mounting screws
Locate and remove the Phillips screws securing the HVAC control panel to the dashboard bracket. There are typically 4 screws, two on each side of the control panel. Keep screws in a magnetic tray to prevent loss.

  5. 5
    Pull HVAC control panel forward
Carefully pull the HVAC control panel forward approximately 3-4 inches from the dashboard. Support the unit with one hand while accessing the rear connectors. Do not pull harshly or force the unit as electrical connectors are still attached.
  6. 6
    Disconnect electrical connectors
Locate the electrical connectors on the rear of the HVAC control panel. There are typically 2-3 connectors depending on trim level. Press the locking tabs on each connector and carefully pull straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and position of each connector for reassembly.
  7. 7
    Remove HVAC control panel
With all connectors disconnected, remove the HVAC control panel completely from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting bracket and surrounding area for any damage or loose hardware.
  8. 8
    Install new HVAC control panel
Position the new HVAC control panel near the dashboard opening. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the rear of the unit, ensuring each connector clicks firmly into place and locking tabs engage. Verify connectors are fully seated by giving a gentle tug.
  9. 9
    Secure HVAC control panel
Push the HVAC control panel into the dashboard opening, aligning the mounting holes with the bracket. Install all mounting screws and tighten in a cross pattern to the specified torque. Ensure the panel sits flush with the dashboard.

  10. 10
    Reinstall trim bezel
Reconnect the hazard switch electrical connector. Position the center console trim bezel over the HVAC control panel and audio unit. Press firmly around all edges until all clips snap into place. Verify the bezel is flush and secure around the entire perimeter.
  11. 11
    Reinstall lower dashboard trim
Align the lower dashboard trim panel with the mounting clips. Starting at one end, press firmly to engage each clip until the panel is fully seated. Verify all edges are flush with no gaps.
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Allow the HVAC system to initialize for 30 seconds. The control panel should illuminate and respond to inputs.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim panels are fully seated with no gaps or misalignment
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are fully engaged with locking tabs secured
  3. Check that mounting screws are tightened to proper torque specification
  4. Confirm hazard switch operates correctly after reassembly

Verification

  • Start the engine and verify HVAC blower operates at all speed settings
  • Test temperature control by adjusting from cold to hot, confirming air temperature changes
  • Verify mode selection works correctly (defrost, floor, dash vents, etc.)
  • Check that all buttons and controls illuminate properly with headlights on
  • Test automatic climate control functions if equipped, ensuring system maintains set temperature
  • Verify no error messages or warning lights appear on the instrument cluster
  • Confirm all trim panels are secure with no rattles or loose components
