Replace a single ignition coil on the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine to restore proper spark delivery to one cylinder.

Warnings

⚠️Allow engine to cool completely before starting work. Ignition coils and surrounding components can retain heat for extended periods.
Never disconnect ignition components with engine running or ignition on. This can damage the ignition system and ECU.
ℹ️This procedure covers one coil. The 2.5L I4 has individual coils for each of the four cylinders located on top of the engine.

Tools required

10mm socket and ratchetEssential
16mm spark plug socket with rubber insertEssential
Torque wrench (5-25 Nm range)Essential
Extension bar (6-inch)Essential
Dielectric greaseEssential
Anti-seize compoundEssential
Compressed air or vacuum

Parts

  • Ignition coil × 1 — Use OEM Toyota part number 90919-02262 or equivalent
  • Spark plug (if worn) × 1 — Use OEM Toyota part number 90919-01253 or equivalent

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Identify which cylinder coil needs replacement (cylinders numbered 1-4 from timing belt end)
  5. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system discharge

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the ignition coil
Locate the failing ignition coil on top of the engine. Remove any engine cover if present by pulling upward on the cover tabs. The 2.5L engine has four individual coils mounted directly into the valve cover.
  2. 2
    Disconnect electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the ignition coil electrical connector and pull straight up to disconnect. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove ignition coil mounting bolt
Using a 10mm socket, remove the single bolt securing the ignition coil to the valve cover. Keep the bolt in a safe location for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Ignition Coil Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Extract the ignition coil
Grasp the ignition coil firmly and pull straight up with a twisting motion to remove from the spark plug well. The coil boot may stick due to heat cycling. If stuck, gently twist back and forth while pulling upward. Do not pry against the valve cover.
  5. 5
    Clean spark plug well
Use compressed air or a vacuum to remove any debris, oil, or dirt from the spark plug well before proceeding. Inspect the well for oil accumulation which may indicate a valve cover gasket leak requiring separate attention.
Do not allow debris to fall into the cylinder. Foreign material can cause severe engine damage.
  6. 6
Inspect and replace spark plug if needed
Using a 16mm spark plug socket with rubber insert and extension, carefully remove the spark plug if it requires replacement due to wear or fouling. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new spark plug. Install and torque to specification.
Cross-threading spark plugs in aluminum heads can cause catastrophic damage. Thread spark plug by hand first to ensure proper alignment before using tools.

  7. 7
    Prepare new ignition coil
Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the inside of the new ignition coil boot. This prevents moisture intrusion and aids future removal. Do not use anti-seize on the coil boot.
  8. 8
    Install new ignition coil
Align the new ignition coil with the spark plug and valve cover mounting hole. Push down firmly until the coil is fully seated on the spark plug. The coil should sit flush against the valve cover.
  9. 9
    Secure ignition coil
Install the mounting bolt and torque to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can crack the coil housing or damage the valve cover threads.

  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connector
Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until you hear and feel a positive click. Verify the connector is fully seated by gently pulling on it.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine cover if equipped by aligning tabs and pressing down until clips engage
  2. Reconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  3. Close hood

Verification

  • Start engine and verify it runs smoothly without misfires or rough idle
  • Check for proper connection by ensuring no CHECK ENGINE light appears
  • Listen for unusual noises or irregular engine operation
  • If available, use an OBD-II scanner to verify no misfire codes (P0300-P0304) are present
  • Rev engine gently to 2000-3000 RPM and verify smooth operation across all RPM ranges
