This procedure covers removal and replacement of the ignition switch assembly on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, including steering column access and electrical connections.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 90 seconds before working near the steering column to allow SRS system capacitors to discharge.
The steering column contains the airbag clockspring. Do not rotate the steering wheel or column shaft after removal of steering components or clockspring damage may occur.
Never use excessive force on steering column components as damage to the tilt/telescoping mechanism or locking components may result.
ℹ️Ensure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead and the steering wheel is locked in center position before beginning work.

Parts

  • Ignition switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Lower steering column cover clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground with front wheels pointing straight ahead
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle
  3. Engage parking brake firmly
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds minimum for SRS system discharge
  5. Adjust steering column to full down and full in position for maximum access
  6. Lock steering wheel in centered position using the steering lock

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Remove the Phillips screws securing the lower steering column cover (typically 3-4 screws). Carefully pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Remove the upper steering column cover by releasing clips and lifting upward. Set covers aside in a clean area.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Disconnect hood release cable
Locate the hood release cable attached to the left side of the lower dash area. Press the cable retaining clip and slide the cable housing out of its bracket to allow full access to the steering column area.
ℹ️The hood release cable does not need to be fully removed, just repositioned for clearance.
  3. 3
Remove knee airbag module if equipped
If your Camry is equipped with a knee airbag in the lower dash panel, remove the mounting bolts (typically two 10mm bolts). Carefully pull the airbag module forward and disconnect the yellow SRS connector by pressing the release tab. Set the airbag module face-up in a safe location away from the work area.
⚠️Always place removed airbag modules face-up on a clean, stable surface away from the work area. Never place face-down or near heat sources.
  4. 4
    Access ignition switch mounting area
Locate the ignition switch assembly on the right side of the steering column, near where the key cylinder or start button housing mounts. You may need to remove or loosen the instrument cluster trim panel for better access on some models.
  5. 5
    Disconnect ignition switch electrical connectors
Identify the main electrical connector(s) attached to the ignition switch. Press the locking tab(s) and carefully pull the connector(s) straight off the switch. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation. If equipped with connector bolts, remove them first.
Do not pull on wires themselves; always grasp the connector body to prevent wire damage.
    Torque spec
    Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove ignition switch mounting fasteners
Remove the switch mounting screws securing the ignition switch to the steering column (typically 2 screws). These are usually small Phillips or Torx screws accessed from the side or bottom of the column housing.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove ignition switch assembly
Carefully slide the ignition switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch typically slides out of a bracket or housing. If resistance is felt, verify all mounting screws and electrical connections have been removed. Inspect the mounting area for any damaged components or debris.
  8. 8
Prepare and install new ignition switch
Compare the new ignition switch with the old unit to verify correct part. Clean the mounting area on the steering column with electrical contact cleaner if needed. Align the new switch with the mounting bracket and carefully slide it into position, ensuring proper engagement with any alignment pins or slots.
  9. 9
    Install switch mounting fasteners
Install the switch mounting screws and torque to specification. Tighten screws evenly in a cross pattern if multiple screws are used to ensure even seating of the switch assembly.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Route the wiring harness as noted during removal. Firmly press the electrical connector(s) onto the ignition switch until a positive click is heard or felt, indicating full engagement of the locking tab. If equipped with connector bolts, install and torque to specification. Verify connector security by gently pulling on the connector body.
    Torque spec
    Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Reinstall knee airbag module if equipped
Reconnect the yellow SRS connector to the knee airbag module, ensuring it clicks into place. Position the airbag module back into the lower dash area and install the mounting bolts, torquing to specification if torque values are available for these fasteners.
  12. 12
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover and press firmly to engage all retaining clips. Install the lower steering column cover, ensuring all clips align properly, then install the cover screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  13. 13
Reconnect hood release cable and battery
Reinstall the hood release cable into its bracket until the retaining clip engages. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and ensure it is secure.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
  2. Ensure steering column covers are properly aligned and all clips engaged before driving
  3. Confirm hood release cable operates smoothly after reinstallation
  4. After battery reconnection, you may need to reset power windows and sunroof auto-up/down functions using the initialize procedure in the owner's manual

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ACC and ON positions without starting engine, verifying all dash warning lights illuminate normally
  • Start the engine and verify it cranks and starts normally with no ignition-related warning lights
  • Verify all steering column functions operate correctly (tilt, telescoping, steering wheel controls)
  • Test that the ignition key or start button operates smoothly through all positions (LOCK, ACC, ON, START)
  • Confirm no SRS/airbag warning lights remain illuminated after starting the vehicle; if warning light stays on, diagnose SRS system for connector or clockspring issues
  • Verify push-button start brake interlock functions properly if equipped (engine should not start without brake pedal depressed)
