This procedure replaces a single hydraulic valve lifter on the 2018-2024 Toyota Camry 2.5L I4 engine, requiring removal of the valve cover, rocker arm assembly, and camshaft(s) to access the lifter.
Warnings
⚠️Incorrect valve train assembly or torque specifications can cause catastrophic engine failure, valve-to-piston contact, and potential engine fire. If you are uncertain about any step, consult a professional technician.
⚠️Camshafts are under spring tension. Improper removal can cause the camshaft to rotate suddenly, causing serious hand injury.
⚠The 2.5L engine uses hydraulic lifters that MUST be kept upright and filled with oil. Do not lay lifters on their side or they will drain and cause engine noise or damage on startup.
⚠Mark all rocker arms and shafts during removal. They MUST be reinstalled in their original positions to prevent premature wear.
⚠Do not rotate the crankshaft with camshafts removed. This can cause valve-to-piston contact and severe engine damage.
ℹ️This engine uses a timing chain. Setting the engine to TDC compression stroke on cylinder #1 is critical before camshaft removal.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (minimum 2 hours after last operation).
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 90 seconds for airbag system discharge.
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on retaining clips.
- Drain engine oil completely and replace drain plug.
- Remove ignition coils from all four cylinders (10mm bolts, 7 Nm).
- Remove spark plugs and label them by cylinder position.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise using 19mm socket on crankshaft pulley bolt until cylinder #1 is at TDC compression stroke (both valves closed, timing marks aligned).
- Take photos of timing marks on camshaft sprockets for reference.
- Place clean shop towels in engine valley to catch any falling components.
- Prepare labeled containers for rocker arms, marking their cylinder number and intake/exhaust position.
Procedure
- 1Remove valve coverDisconnect PCV hoses and any wiring harness clips attached to valve cover. Remove all valve cover bolts in reverse sequence (start from outside, work inward). Carefully lift valve cover straight up to avoid damaging gasket mating surfaces. Inspect mating surfaces on cylinder head for damage or warping.Torque specCover Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 2Document rocker arm assembly positionsBefore removing any components, take detailed photos of rocker arm assembly from multiple angles. Use a permanent marker to number each rocker arm shaft cap with its position (1-5 from timing chain end). Mark each rocker arm with its cylinder number (1-4) and position (I for intake, E for exhaust).⚠Rocker arms wear into their specific positions. Mixing positions will cause accelerated wear and potential valve train failure.
- 3Remove rocker arm shaft assembliesLoosen rocker arm shaft bolts gradually in multiple passes, working from the outside bolts toward the center. Loosen each bolt 1/4 turn at a time to prevent warping the shaft. Once all bolts are loose, remove them completely. Carefully lift the rocker arm shaft assembly straight up. Place assembly on clean workbench and keep rocker arms in order.⚠Uneven removal of rocker shaft bolts can bend the shaft, causing oil starvation to lifters and rocker arms.Torque specRocker Arm Shaft Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 4Remove camshaft timing componentsMark timing chain position relative to camshaft sprockets with paint marker. Hold camshaft with appropriate holding tool or adjustable wrench on hex section. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Carefully support timing chain with wire or zip tie to prevent it from falling into timing cover. Do NOT allow chain to slip off crankshaft sprocket.⚠️If timing chain falls off crankshaft sprocket, timing cover must be removed to reinstall chain. Do not attempt to restart engine if timing is lost.
- 5Remove camshaftsLoosen camshaft bearing cap bolts gradually in multiple passes from outside toward center, 1/4 turn at a time. Remove bearing caps and keep them in order (they are numbered). Carefully lift camshafts straight up. Inspect camshaft lobes and journals for scoring or wear. Place camshafts on clean surface where they cannot roll.⚠Camshaft bearing caps are NOT interchangeable and must be reinstalled in original positions with correct orientation.
- 6Remove and inspect failed lifterUse magnetic pickup tool to carefully remove the failed lifter from its bore. Keep lifter upright. Inspect lifter bore in cylinder head for scoring, debris, or metal contamination. If bore shows damage, cylinder head service is required. Note which valve this lifter operated (intake or exhaust, which cylinder). Inspect camshaft lobe for corresponding lifter for wear or damage.⚠Metal contamination in oil from failed lifter can damage other lifters. Consider replacing oil filter after repair and performing early oil change at 500 miles.
- 7Prepare and install new lifterRemove new lifter from packaging and keep it upright. Verify lifter is pre-filled with oil by gently pressing plunger (should have firm resistance). If lifter is dry, submerge in clean engine oil and pump plunger until no air bubbles emerge. Coat lifter exterior with clean engine oil. Carefully lower lifter into bore with magnetic tool, ensuring it seats fully at bottom of bore.⚠Air-filled lifters will cause severe valve train noise and potential damage on first startup. Ensure lifter is oil-filled and firm before installation.
- 8Reinstall camshafts with proper timingApply thin coat of clean engine oil to all camshaft journals and lobes. Position camshafts with timing marks aligned per factory specifications (lobes pointing upward and outward for cylinder #1 at TDC). Install bearing caps in original positions with arrows pointing toward timing chain. Tighten bearing cap bolts gradually in multiple passes from center outward, 1/4 turn at a time until fully seated. Verify camshafts rotate smoothly by hand.⚠️Incorrect camshaft timing will cause immediate valve-to-piston contact when engine is started, resulting in catastrophic engine damage.
- 9Reinstall timing componentsAlign timing chain onto camshaft sprockets using paint marks made during removal. Verify all timing marks align correctly with factory specifications. Install camshaft sprocket bolts while holding camshafts with holding tool. Remove wire or zip tie supporting timing chain. Rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions clockwise and verify timing marks realign perfectly at TDC.⚠️If timing marks do not realign after two rotations, timing is incorrect. Do NOT start engine. Repeat timing procedure.
- 10Reinstall rocker arm shaft assembliesVerify all rocker arms are in their original marked positions on shaft assembly. Apply clean engine oil to all rocker arm contact surfaces and shaft. Ensure cam lobes are pointing away from rocker arm contact points (rotate crankshaft if needed). Position rocker arm shaft assembly onto cylinder head. Install shaft bolts and tighten gradually in multiple passes working from center outward. Follow tightening sequence: center bolts first, then alternate side-to-side toward ends.⚠Installing rocker shafts with cam lobes pointing toward rocker arms can bend valves or damage lifters during tightening.Torque specRocker Arm Shaft Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 11Install new valve cover gasket and reinstall coverClean valve cover and cylinder head mating surfaces thoroughly with plastic scraper. Remove all old gasket material and oil residue. Install new spark plug tube seals into valve cover. Position new gasket onto valve cover (verify orientation matches old gasket). Install new rocker shaft oil seals if applicable. Place valve cover onto cylinder head, ensuring gasket seats properly. Install valve cover bolts and tighten in sequence from center outward in multiple passes.⚠Over-torquing valve cover bolts will crack the plastic cover. Use torque wrench and follow sequence carefully.Torque specCover Bolts16 Nm (12 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall remaining componentsReinstall spark plugs to original cylinder positions. Reinstall ignition coils and torque bolts to specification. Reconnect PCV hoses and wiring harness clips. Reinstall engine cover. Refill engine with correct quantity of Toyota Genuine 0W-20 oil (5.0 quarts).Torque specElectrical Connector Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Double-check that all timing marks are correctly aligned before attempting to start engine.
- Verify all bolts are torqued to specification, particularly rocker arm shaft bolts and valve cover bolts.
- Ensure no tools or shop towels remain in engine valley or on top of engine.
- Reconnect negative battery terminal.
Verification
- Before starting engine, manually rotate crankshaft one complete revolution to verify no valve-to-piston contact (should rotate smoothly with normal resistance).
- Prime oil system by cranking engine for 5 seconds without starting (disable fuel pump or ignition).
- Start engine and immediately verify oil pressure light extinguishes within 3 seconds.
- Listen for abnormal valve train noise. New lifter may tick briefly (30-60 seconds) while purging air, but noise should disappear quickly.
- Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes and monitor for oil leaks around valve cover gasket.
- Rev engine gently to 2500 RPM several times and listen for valve train noise (should be quiet).
- After test drive, recheck valve cover bolts for proper torque and inspect for leaks.
- Schedule follow-up oil and filter change at 500 miles to remove any metal contamination from failed lifter.
