Remove and replace the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor located in the intake air duct between the air filter box and throttle body.
Warnings
⚠Do not touch the MAF sensor element with fingers or tools. Oils and contaminants will cause incorrect readings and sensor failure.
⚠Ensure engine is completely cool before beginning work to prevent burns from intake components.
ℹ️Disconnecting the battery may cause loss of radio presets and require clock reset. Have radio security code available if applicable.

Parts
- Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor × 1 — Toyota 22204-0P050 or equivalent
- Intake duct gasket/o-ring (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 30 minutes after last operation)
- Open hood and secure with prop rod
- Disconnect negative battery terminal (10mm wrench) and wait 3 minutes to discharge capacitors
Procedure
- 1Locate the MAF sensorThe MAF sensor is integrated into the intake air duct immediately after the air filter box, on the driver's side of the engine bay. It is a black plastic housing approximately 3 inches in diameter with an electrical connector on top.
- 2Disconnect the electrical connectorPress down on the locking tab on top of the MAF sensor electrical connector while pulling the connector straight up and away from the sensor. Do not twist or rock the connector excessively. Set connector aside in a clean location.
- 3Loosen intake duct clampsLocate the hose clamps on both sides of the MAF sensor housing (before and after the sensor). Use a flat blade screwdriver or Phillips screwdriver (depending on clamp type) to loosen both clamps approximately 3-4 turns. Do not remove clamps completely.ℹ️Clamps may be worm-drive style or spring clamps depending on production date. Spring clamps require squeezing with pliers to release.
- 4Remove MAF sensor mounting screwsLocate the two Phillips-head screws that secure the MAF sensor to the intake duct housing. These are typically located on opposite sides of the sensor body. Remove both screws completely and set aside in a secure location.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 5Remove MAF sensor assemblyGently twist the MAF sensor housing slightly (approximately 10-15 degrees) while pulling it out of the intake duct. The sensor should slide out easily. If resistance is felt, check for additional fasteners or stuck rubber seals. Inspect the rubber gasket/o-ring on the sensor for damage.
- 6Inspect and clean mating surfacesExamine the intake duct openings where the MAF sensor was installed. Remove any dirt, debris, or oil contamination using a clean lint-free cloth. Check for cracks in the plastic duct. Ensure no debris has entered the intake system.⚠Do not allow any debris to fall into the intake duct toward the throttle body. Cover opening with clean cloth if necessary.
- 7Prepare new MAF sensorRemove new MAF sensor from packaging carefully. Verify correct part number matches original sensor. Check that rubber gasket/o-ring is properly seated in the groove on the sensor body. Do not remove protective coverings until ready to install.
- 8Install new MAF sensorAlign the MAF sensor with the intake duct opening, ensuring the electrical connector faces upward and is accessible. Insert the sensor straight into the duct, twisting slightly if needed to seat the gasket properly. The sensor should sit flush with the duct mounting surface.
- 9Install MAF sensor mounting screwsInsert both Phillips-head mounting screws and hand-tighten in a cross pattern. Using a torque wrench, tighten screws to specification in alternating pattern to ensure even seating.⚠Over-tightening can crack the plastic sensor housing. Use torque wrench and do not exceed specification.Torque specMAF Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 10Tighten intake duct clampsPosition both hose clamps over the connections on each side of the MAF sensor. Tighten clamps to specification using appropriate screwdriver. Ensure duct is fully seated on both sides before final tightening.Torque specAir Intake Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the MAF sensor terminal, ensuring the locking tab is properly positioned. Push connector straight down onto sensor until a distinct click is heard, indicating the lock has engaged. Gently tug on connector to verify secure connection.
- 12Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine) for 10 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this cycle 3 times to allow the ECU to recognize the new sensor and begin learning process.
Reassembly
- Verify all electrical connections are secure and properly locked
- Confirm all intake duct clamps are tight with no air leaks
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in engine bay
- Close hood securely
Verification
- Start engine and verify it runs smoothly with no rough idle or hesitation
- Check for any vacuum leaks around MAF sensor by listening for hissing sounds
- Verify Check Engine Light does not illuminate after 30 seconds of running
- Test drive vehicle and confirm normal acceleration response and no performance issues
- Use OBD-II scanner to verify MAF sensor is reporting airflow data (typically 2-7 g/s at idle when warm)
- Monitor for any MAF-related trouble codes (P0100-P0104) over next several drive cycles
