Replace the neutral safety switch (also called the park/neutral position switch) on the transmission to restore proper starting functionality and ensure the vehicle only starts in Park or Neutral.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid will drain when the switch is removed. Have a drain pan ready and expect approximately 1-1.5 quarts of fluid loss.
⚠Do not start the engine with the neutral safety switch disconnected or removed, as this bypasses a critical safety feature.
ℹ️The vehicle may have stored fault codes related to the neutral safety switch. These should clear after successful replacement and verification.

Parts
- Neutral safety switch (Park/Neutral Position Switch) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Neutral safety switch O-ring or gasket × 1 — Usually included with switch
Fluids
- Toyota WS ATF — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and set parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system discharge
- Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jack stands
- Remove plastic engine under cover if equipped (multiple 10mm bolts)
- Allow transmission to cool to ambient temperature if recently driven
- Locate the neutral safety switch on the driver's side of the transmission near the shift linkage
Procedure
- 1Access the neutral safety switchFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the neutral safety switch on the left (driver's) side of the transmission case, just below and behind the shift cable connection point. Clear any dirt or debris from around the connector and mounting area.
- 2Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and carefully pull it straight off the neutral safety switch. Inspect the connector terminals for corrosion or damage. Do not pull on the wires themselves.
- 3Position drain panPlace a drain pan directly under the neutral safety switch location. When the switch is removed, transmission fluid will drain from the opening. Position the pan to catch approximately 1-1.5 quarts of fluid.
- 4Remove switch mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the two mounting bolts securing the neutral safety switch to the transmission case. Keep these bolts as they will be reused if the replacement switch does not include new hardware.Torque specMounting Bolts61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
- 5Extract the old switchCarefully pull the neutral safety switch straight out from the transmission case. Fluid will immediately begin draining. Allow the fluid to drain completely into the pan. Remove and discard the old O-ring or gasket from the switch or transmission case bore.
- 6Clean the mounting surfaceUse a clean shop towel to wipe the transmission case mounting surface where the switch seals. Remove any old gasket material, dirt, or debris. Do not allow any contamination to enter the transmission case opening. A small amount of fluid may continue to seep out.
- 7Prepare the new switchInstall the new O-ring or gasket onto the new neutral safety switch. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with clean transmission fluid to ease installation and prevent damage. Verify the switch orientation matches the old unit.
- 8Install the new switchAlign the neutral safety switch shaft with the transmission detent/manual valve shaft inside the case. Carefully push the switch into place, ensuring the O-ring does not roll or pinch. The switch should seat flush against the transmission case.
- 9Install and torque mounting boltsThread in both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern using a torque wrench to the specified value of 15.0 Nm (11.0 lb-ft). Do not overtighten as this may damage the switch housing.Torque specMounting Bolts61 Nm (45 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector onto the new neutral safety switch until you hear or feel a distinct click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure.
- 11Refill transmission fluidUsing the transmission fill plug or dipstick tube (depending on configuration), add the appropriate amount of Toyota WS ATF to replace what was lost during the procedure. Add fluid slowly and check level according to manufacturer procedure. Typically 1-1.5 quarts will restore proper level.
- 12Reinstall under coversReinstall the plastic engine under cover if it was removed. Lower the vehicle from jack stands. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or materials were left in the engine bay or underneath the vehicle
- Double-check transmission fluid level with engine at operating temperature per manufacturer procedure
- Confirm all fasteners are tightened to specification
Verification
- With foot on brake, verify the engine starts only in Park and Neutral positions
- Verify the engine will NOT start in Drive, Reverse, or any other gear position
- Check that backup lights illuminate when shifter is moved to Reverse
- Confirm the shifter can be moved out of Park only when brake pedal is depressed and ignition is on
- Inspect underneath the vehicle for any transmission fluid leaks around the switch after test
- Use an OBD-II scanner to verify no fault codes are present and the neutral safety switch signal is being received by the ECM
- Road test the vehicle to ensure normal transmission operation and proper gear indication on instrument cluster
