Parts

  • PCV Valve × 1 — Toyota 12204-0P011 or equivalent
  • PCV Valve Grommet × 1 — Check if included with valve or order separately

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely
  3. Open hood and secure with prop rod
  4. Locate PCV valve on the driver's side of the valve cover near the intake manifold

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove engine cover if equipped
Some 2018-2024 Camry models have a plastic engine cover. If present, grasp firmly and pull upward to release the retaining clips. Set aside in a clean area.
  2. 2
    Disconnect PCV hose
Locate the PCV hose connection at the valve. Gently twist and pull the hose away from the valve. If the hose is stiff, carefully use a flathead screwdriver to break the seal between the hose and valve fitting. Inspect the hose for cracks or deterioration.
Do not force the hose connector as it can break easily. Work it gently side to side while pulling
  3. 3
    Remove old PCV valve
Using a 10mm socket and ratchet, carefully loosen the PCV valve by turning counterclockwise. The valve threads directly into the valve cover. Once loose, remove by hand and inspect the valve and grommet. Check for oil residue or carbon buildup indicating proper replacement interval.
  4. 4
    Inspect grommet and mounting area
Check the rubber grommet or seal where the PCV valve mounts. If the grommet is cracked, hardened, or damaged, replace it now. Clean the valve cover mounting area with a shop towel to remove any oil or debris. Ensure threads in valve cover are clean and undamaged.
  5. 5
    Install new PCV valve grommet
If replacing the grommet, carefully press the new grommet into the valve cover opening. Ensure it seats completely and evenly in the mounting hole. Apply a light film of clean engine oil to the grommet to ease valve installation.
  6. 6
    Install new PCV valve
Thread the new PCV valve into the valve cover by hand, turning clockwise. Once hand-tight and seated, use a torque wrench with 10mm socket to tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the valve cover threads or crack the valve body.
The valve cover is aluminum and threads can strip easily. Use proper torque specification

    PCV Valve8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Reconnect PCV hose
Push the PCV hose firmly onto the valve fitting until it seats completely. You should feel or hear a slight click when properly connected. Gently tug on the hose to verify secure connection.
  8. 8
    Reinstall engine cover
If an engine cover was removed, align the mounting clips with their receptacles on the engine and press down firmly until all clips engage and the cover sits flush.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all hose connections are secure and properly seated
  2. Verify no tools or parts were left in the engine bay
  3. Double-check PCV valve is torqued to specification

Verification

  • Start the engine and allow it to idle for 2-3 minutes
  • Listen for any unusual vacuum leaks or hissing sounds near the PCV valve area
  • With engine running, remove the oil filler cap briefly - you should feel slight suction indicating proper PCV operation
  • Check for oil leaks around the PCV valve after engine reaches operating temperature
  • Monitor for reduced oil consumption and smoother idle over the next few drives
