This procedure replaces the power steering return hose on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with the 2.5L I4 engine, which uses electric power steering and requires no fluid service.

Warnings

ℹ️The 2018-2024 Camry 2.5L I4 uses Electric Power Steering (EPS) with no hydraulic fluid. If your vehicle has a power steering return hose, it is for power steering cooler return or auxiliary system only.
Verify your specific vehicle configuration before proceeding. Most 2.5L I4 Camrys do not have a traditional hydraulic power steering return hose.
Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to avoid burns from hot components.

Parts

  • Power steering return hose × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Hose clamps (if not reusable) × 2 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
  2. Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
  3. Allow engine to cool completely
  4. Verify your vehicle actually has a hydraulic power steering return hose - most 2.5L I4 models use electric power steering only
  5. If hydraulic system is present, prepare drain pan to catch any residual fluid
  6. Disconnect negative battery cable if working near electrical components

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the power steering system
Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack and secure on jack stands. Remove the engine under cover using a 10mm socket to access the steering components from below.
  2. 2
    Locate the return hose
Identify the power steering return hose routing from the steering rack to the reservoir or cooler. The return hose is typically the lower pressure hose with spring clamps rather than threaded fittings. Trace the hose to confirm both connection points.
  3. 3
    Position drain pan
Place a drain pan beneath the connection points where the return hose attaches. Even in systems with minimal fluid, some residual fluid may be present in the hose.
  4. 4
    Remove reservoir end clamp
Using hose clamp pliers or a flathead screwdriver, release the spring clamp or worm-drive clamp at the reservoir end of the return hose. Slide the clamp away from the connection point.
  5. 5
    Disconnect reservoir end
Twist and pull the return hose off the reservoir fitting. Allow any residual fluid to drain into the pan. Plug the reservoir nipple with a clean rag to prevent contamination.
  6. 6
    Remove steering rack end clamp
Locate the connection at the steering rack or cooler end. Release the clamp using the same method as the reservoir end and slide it away from the connection.
  7. 7
    Disconnect steering rack end
Twist and pull the return hose off the steering rack or cooler fitting. Allow complete drainage into the pan. Inspect both fittings for damage or excessive wear.
  8. 8
    Remove old hose and inspect
Remove the old return hose from the vehicle, noting the exact routing path for installation of the new hose. Inspect mounting brackets or clips that secure the hose along its route and ensure they are intact.
  9. 9
    Install new return hose
Route the new power steering return hose along the same path as the original, ensuring it does not contact any sharp edges, hot exhaust components, or moving parts. Verify sufficient clearance throughout the steering travel range.
  10. 10
    Connect reservoir end
Push the new hose firmly onto the reservoir fitting until it seats completely against the stop. Install a new or reusable clamp and position it approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the hose. Secure the clamp tightly.
  11. 11
    Connect steering rack end
Push the hose firmly onto the steering rack or cooler fitting until fully seated. Install and secure the clamp in the same manner as the reservoir end, ensuring a leak-free connection.
  12. 12
    Secure hose routing
Install any mounting clips or brackets along the hose route to prevent chafing or vibration damage. Ensure the hose has no kinks and maintains proper clearance from all moving and hot components.
  13. 13
    Reinstall under cover
Reinstall the engine under cover and secure with the original fasteners. Lower the vehicle from jack stands.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect negative battery cable if disconnected
  2. Double-check all clamp connections for security
  3. Verify hose routing has proper clearance from exhaust and suspension components
  4. Clean up any spilled fluid from work area

Verification

  • Start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times
  • Inspect both hose connections for any signs of leakage
  • Re-check hose routing and clearances with steering at full lock in both directions
  • Test drive the vehicle and verify normal steering operation with no unusual noises
  • Perform a final inspection of all connections after test drive
