This procedure covers removal and replacement of the steering wheel on a 2018-2024 Toyota Camry with 2.5L I4 engine, including proper airbag handling and alignment.
Warnings
⚠️Airbag system contains explosive propellant. Improper handling can cause deployment resulting in serious injury or death.
⚠️Battery MUST be disconnected for at least 90 seconds before working on airbag components to allow capacitor discharge.
⚠Do not strike the airbag module or steering column. Impact can cause unintended deployment.
⚠Never place airbag module face-down. Always place with airbag facing upward on a clean surface.
ℹ️Wheels must be pointed straight ahead before removal to maintain proper clock spring alignment.

Parts
- Steering wheel (if replacing) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface with front wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 90 seconds for airbag system capacitor discharge
- Verify steering wheel is centered and wheels are straight
- Mark alignment position between steering wheel and column shaft with paint pen for proper reinstallation
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversRemove the lower steering column trim covers by locating and removing the cover screws. Gently pull covers away from column to disengage any retaining clips. Set covers aside in a safe location.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 2Access airbag module fastenersLocate the two airbag module access holes on the left and right sides of the steering wheel rear. These are typically covered by small plugs or visible through openings in the wheel spokes.ℹ️Access hole locations vary by trim level but are always accessible from rear of steering wheel.
- 3Remove airbag module mounting boltsUsing a T30 Torx bit, remove the airbag module mounting bolts through the access holes on each side of the steering wheel. Support the airbag module with your hand as you remove the second bolt to prevent it from falling.⚠Support airbag module during removal to prevent dropping or striking steering column.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect airbag electrical connectorCarefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Locate the yellow airbag connector on the rear of the module. Press the locking tab and disconnect the connector. If equipped, disconnect the horn connector and any steering wheel control connectors.⚠Yellow connectors indicate airbag system components. Handle with care.
- 5Store airbag module safelyPlace the airbag module on a clean, flat surface with the airbag pad facing UP (away from surface). Do not place anything on top of the airbag module. Keep away from heat sources and high traffic areas.⚠️Never place airbag module face-down. Deployment against a surface can cause serious injury.
- 6Remove steering wheel retaining nutUsing a 19mm socket, remove the steering wheel center nut. Note the position of any washers. Do not discard the nut as it will be reused unless replacing.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 7Remove steering wheel from shaftWith both hands, firmly grip the steering wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock positions. Pull straight back while rocking gently side to side. If wheel does not release easily, use a proper steering wheel puller. Do NOT strike the wheel or column shaft. Ensure your alignment marks remain visible on the shaft for reinstallation.⚠The clock spring behind steering wheel is fragile. Do not rotate the clock spring or steering shaft while wheel is removed.⚠Never use excessive force or strike steering wheel or shaft. This can damage clock spring or collapse steering column.
- 8Install replacement or original steering wheelVerify the clock spring connector is properly seated and the centering mechanism (if visible) shows proper alignment. Align the steering wheel with your previously marked alignment position on the shaft. Slide the steering wheel onto the shaft ensuring the splines engage properly and the wheel seats completely against the clock spring.⚠Wheel MUST be installed in exact same position as removal. Misalignment will cause incorrect steering angle sensor readings and may trigger warning lights.
- 9Install steering wheel retaining nutThread the steering wheel nut onto the shaft by hand, ensuring any washers are properly positioned. Using a torque wrench and 19mm socket, tighten the steering wheel nut to specification. Verify steering wheel is firmly seated and has no play.Torque specSteering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect all electrical connectors including the yellow airbag connector, horn connector, and any steering wheel control connectors. Ensure each connector clicks fully into place and locking tabs engage.ℹ️Verify yellow airbag connector is fully seated before installing airbag module.
- 11Reinstall airbag modulePosition the airbag module against the steering wheel, guiding connectors through the wheel opening. Align the mounting holes on both sides. Install both airbag module mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque to specification using T30 Torx bit and torque wrench. Tighten in a cross pattern if manufacturer specifies sequence.⚠Proper torque is critical for airbag retention during deployment. Verify both bolts are torqued to specification.Torque specAirbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall steering column coversReinstall the lower steering column covers, ensuring all clips engage properly. Install cover screws and torque to specification. Verify covers are secure and do not interfere with steering wheel movement.Torque specCover Screws11 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 13Reconnect battery and clear codesReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly then extinguishes. If light remains on, do not drive vehicle and diagnose airbag system fault codes. Start engine and verify all steering wheel functions operate normally.
Reassembly
- Torque all fasteners to specified values in the order listed in the procedure
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify steering wheel alignment matches original position with wheels straight ahead
- Confirm airbag warning light performs normal self-test and extinguishes after ignition on
Verification
- With engine running, turn steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
- Verify horn functions properly
- Test all steering wheel controls (cruise control, audio, phone, etc.) for proper operation
- Confirm airbag warning light is OFF with engine running
- Drive vehicle at low speed in safe area and verify steering response is normal and wheels are properly centered when driving straight
- If equipped with Lane Departure or steering angle sensor systems, perform steering angle sensor calibration using factory scan tool if warning lights appear
